Game Recap: Yankees 9 – Rays 3

Need to Know: Kelly Johnson’s sixth-inning home run gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead in the  as the Bombers cruised to a 9-3 win over the Rays. Masahiro Tanaka remained undefeated improving to 4-0 as the Yankees bailed him out from an early 3-0 hold.

The Rays took a 3-0 lead with runs in the first, second and fourth before Marx Teixeira cut the deficit to 3-2 on a long two-run home run in the fourth to the second deck in right field off starter Jake Odorizzi. Jacoby Ellsbury tied the score for the Yankees in the fifth on a ground-rule double to left center scoring Ichiro Suzuki, who had doubled.

Johnson led off the sixth inning with a home run off Rays reliever Josh Lueke for a 4-3 lead. Teixeira added an RBI single in the seventh while Alfonso Soriano had a sacrifice fly in the seventh as the Yankees pulled away.

Teixeira had two hits and three RBIs including his fifth home run of the season. Ellsbury added three hits and two runs scored while Brett Gardner, hitting second as Derek Jeter had the day off, had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. . Suzuki also continues to hit well as the 40-year old outfielder had two more hits and two runs scored and is batting .375 for the Yankees out of the eighth spot.

Tanaka (4-0, 2.65 ERA) scattered eight hits and struck out five throwing 113 pitches in seven innings. He didn’t walk a batter.

The Yankees will close out the weekend series with the Rays on Sunday at Yankee Stadium with CC Sabathia (3-3, 5.11 ERA)  going for the Yankees and Erik Bedard (0-1, 5.52) for the Rays. game time is 1:05 p.m. at Yankee Stadium.
