Who are your favorite 'very old' male/female movie stars?

Would only like your favorite of the 'very-old' movie stars ... bit if you need to go with more than one (Of each sex) list them in order of your liking please.

I'm trying to find the actors where a majority of their work was done pre-1960 this time. That is where the 'very-old' part came from.

It would help if you listed each with a number:

    #1
    #2
    #3
    #4
    #5

We can do 'semi-old' actors next ... maybe (1960-1979).

    Then actors from (1980-1999) after.

Then relatively current favorite actors, (2000-now)

These time periods will be from where a majority of the actor's most recognized body of work has come from. (Age is some of the factor but work frame is important).

Like maybe ... Jack Lemon could be considered both 'pre-1960' but probably 1960-79? It's a tough one for some.

PLEASE NOTE BEFORE VOTING I HOPE

The poll is being edited the only way I know how. Thanks for pointing out the mistake. The second Jimmy Stewart should read as Cary Grant as the choice intended. Sorry.

You consider her 'very-old' then? Ummm. I hope she finds out about what you said! Any chance for a date will be off for sure Seymour!

Actors (In no particular order): Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, William Holden

They come to mind immediately. Really, how can Bogey and Grant (birth name: Archibald Leech) not be listed, yet Jimmy Stewart is on there twice?

    I'll think of actresses later.

Damn! I just saw that mistake. I didn't check that out like I should of. I was debating to myself if I'd have Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy or Bogey. I was going to go with Grant. $hip! Is there any way that can get changed? I'm sorry.

Gregory Peck, Spencer Tracy, Robert Mitchum, William Powell, Gary Cooper
Katherine Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Carol Lombard, Ingrid Bergman, can't think of a 5th actress right now. Maybe Barbara Stanwyck.

I picked John Wayne because my dad loved him. I picked other also because I like the "Grapes of Wrath" guy but can't I remember his name right now.

Is Liz Taylor real old or just old? I picked her.

Yes I have. She was really beautiful back then for sure. I really liked her the best in the movie Giant.

Do you know who the actor is for the movie I mentioned. I know his name but just can't think of it.

For starters.... The Duke, Bing Crosby, Heny Fonda, Erroll Flynn, Cary Grant, Joseph Cotten, Howard Keel, Frederich March, Jennifer Jones, Loretta Young, Maureen O'Hara, Theresa Wright, Rita Hayworth. A couple of character actors I like...... Monty Woolley, Charles Bickford. That's enough for now.

Cary Grant is tops for male actors, Gregory Peck would be a close second, maybe even Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart definitely belongs close to the top ; as for female actors - Grace Kelly, Eva Marie Saint, Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn.

Geez. You're not gonna like him in the 1960-1979 period then? I guess he must be your all-time favorite then for the older guys. I had five to pick for pre-1960! It's a given then. Marlon is #1 for YOU!

How could I forget Gregory Peck?? He was fabulous in To Kill A Mockingbird, but my favorite of his films is Gentleman's Agreement. If you haven't seen it, rent it. Great movie, won Best Picture. I'd add him to the list I posted previously. One of the best.

A little film trivia.... Stewart Granger's real life name was James Stewart. Hence the name change, because you couldn't have two Jimmy Stewarts, could you? (Well, besides Dave that is)

John was absolutely right in what he said ... and I made the mistake that is seen. I often do make mistakes ... and boy ... do I hate it when I do!

But ... I must say that I did do all that I could do to edit my error after I first found out about what I had done when jlw1980 had pointed it out on post #5. I first saw that post that was made about 12 minutes after jlw had done it. I then posted a quote back to what jlw had said and I explained somewhat ... and wasn't happy for the mistake I had made. Then I said something about being lost about what to do about 2 minutes later in another post.

Then after doing that, I had managed to figure out at least something I could do about the error another 5 minutes later after having said that I was lost about what to do.

That was when I made an edit that mentioned the wrong thing I had done in my poll set-up ... and I was making a change in the only way I knew how to do it ... and with my hopes that my explanation might be seen first before one would then vote in the existing poll.

I then went back and told jlw1980 in a quote again ... about another 7 minutes later ... about how I probably had made the screw up in the first place most likely. What I said was .... ... I had first written my picks out and then pasted them into the poll afterwards when I was working on the poll. I had a little food interruption though. When I was eating my pizza I was apparently into eating the pizza more than I was about doing the poll correctly. I double copied and pasted instead of using one of the three other names I had ... but hadn't been able to decide on which fella to use.

Tom ... John just didn't see the explanation I gave in the edit for the poll. Some apparently did see the edit and voted in the 2nd Stewart spot for the person I had really intended in being there.

That is all there is to it Tom. John just didn't see what I had done to correct the whole mess I had made. John just didn't read quite far enough. That was his only mistake. I just made a mockery of the poll business that I tried doing today. I'm mad at myself for that.

But I don't think John really made the mistake. I'd like to think the real fact is that John saw the humor of my poll situation, with his seeing that I had Stewart down twice and he was getting votes from two sources ... and figured that there are probably some people that may not of noticed the same thing he had, and they voted intending for Stewart maybe twice when they voted there ... hense ... John made his comment to acknowledge the double votes in that special dry way he shows his humor. I like John's humor.

I would like to think though that people won't take what John said wrongly but only read John's humor as intended ... and not something directed at people that may have voted wrongly as being people that are not quite with the program. Being funny is all he was trying to do.

I realize that the people that really did vote in that second Stewart position only did what I had hoped they would do ... and that was to read my edit of the change first ... and then vote in the second Stewart position for the Actor I had intended instead in my editing ... which is Cary Grant!

We have all kinds of people here that like to just have fun. I think John is one of the people at the top of that list.

And Tom ... if you read this ... I can only wish that I had only half the smarts that you ... and John ... both have, far more than what you kindly give me credit for. I appreciate that though and you are a true friend to me.
Who the hell are Tom & John?

I never got John Wayne. Horrible actor, terrible movies. I've always been more of a Gary Cooper/Jimmy Stewart fan. Pre-Godfather Brando is also way up there. As is Anthony Perkins.

Audrey Hepburn would definitely be my female pick far and away, without question. Followed by Joan Fontaine, perhaps. And I have to add that if you strip away everything you know about her personal life, Marilyn Monroe is really great on screen, too.

If you like Westerns, you probably like John Wayne. I think he's alright. My wife loves him and can probably say every line of every movie along with him.

I'm not sure about John. He seems like a bit of an ass. I agree about Tom though.

None can act as good as Jimmy Stewart though. What was the name of the rabbit that followed Jimmy around in a movie long ago?

(And yes, I am well aware my dislike of John Wayne is more or less blasphemous.)

I thought there'd be someone on the poll that I think I've seen in a movie. Nope, I think I've missed out on all of them except for maybe Gable.

Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. Naturally, Rear Window is one of my all-time favorite movies.

Shows how long ago it's been since I've seen the movie White Christmas ... with Bing.
