Thread: So today . . .

  1. #1

    So today . . .

I was in my Business Statistics class at about 11:00 A.M. I got there a little early and studied a little for the upcoming quiz when my teacher enters the room.

The first thing that comes out of his mouth is:

    "Damn Yankees."

"Did anyone see the highlights? Derek Jeter went 5 for 5. I hope Jeter and A-Rod collide and die."

He literally said that. Some people in the class started laughing while I just sat there and rolled my eyes. Yeah . . . wishing death upon Yankees players is going to magically put the Red Sox in the playoffs. (I go to school at Fitchburg State College Massachusetts by the way).

Not sure if this is the correct forum.

I heard this today...Did Coltrane actually exist? This is like being blind for 50 years, regaining sight, and then peering directly at the sun.

This quote struck me strange. Yes, he does wish death on Jeter and A-Rod...but death by collision?? If you're going to wish death upon someone, there are so many more interesting and/or nastier ways to go about it.

But as a professor at the university level, he should be smart enough to know that such a comment to a group of students is inappropriate.

It was not the right place to say something like that.

He is very young. He can't be much older than some of his students.

Everytime the Yanks advance futher in the playoffs, get to class early and leave a copy of the paper with them celebrating.

And as a statistics professor, he should know better! I think I posted somewhere before that one of our stats profs here at NYU developed a paper on how the Yankees Dynasty of the 90s (and 2000) were statistically the best baseballl team EVER. It pained him to write that (I think he is a Mets fan) but... he's an academic.

Perhaps, but not knowing the tenor of the classroom, it's hard to say. I had a couple of professors with foul mouths and nobody seemed to mind. I also took part in some real ill-tempered arguments with professors that ended with everybody having a beer afterwards. Those are some of my best memories from the college classroom.

By college age, everybody is supposed to be grown ups, I wouldn't think that guy's comments would be a problem.

    Re: So today . . .

My son, who's a high school junior, has a chemistry teacher this year who introduced herself to the class saying that she was originally from Massachusetts and yes, that means she's a Red Sox fan. They had a test a couple of weeks ago where the extra credit question was: "Who is the teacher's favorite baseball team?" I told my son to just give her a wide berth because she doles out the grades but he insists that if the Yanks win the WS this year he's wearing all his gear into school. At least my middle schooler has a social studies teacher who's a Yanks fan. The other day was sports jersey day at his MS. Most of the kids around here wore Clemson or USC gear. He wore his Jeter BP jersey and his Yankees' cap which he said several kids tried to knock off his head. Jerks.

I went to college in the Boston area too... that is typical. They suck as a fan base. The worst thing is that I think we are slightly turning into them with all the anti-Sox t-shirts and hats...
