    Tainted Spinach

A few days ago, while dining out, I noticed that my salad had baby spinach leaves in it. I thought supermarkets and restaurants were not not selling or including it in their meals, but I guess I was wrong. Well I ate it and suffered no bad side effects, but I did feel a bit uneasy to say the least. I don't know what caused the e coli contamination, but whatever the cause turns out to be, the specter of agroterrorism looms large in our society.

I know the bagged spinach is off the market but you can still get frozen or canned spinach. I'm going to assume if it was a nice restaurant they get their spinach from a farmer's market type place. I really don't know what the status is for loose leaf spinach, but I wouldn't worry about it. The restaurant isn't looking for law suits, so I'm sure it was OK.

Only packaged Spinach is a problem. Perhaps the restaurant got it fresh. Lots of restaurants know exactly where their food comes from. In the city, the Union Square farmers market still has it.

I buy packaged spinach once a year, if that. Wouldn't you know it I bought one the day before this all happened and served it to my entire family? I guess we all got lucky, and the only sickness I heard of near us was 1 town over.

Overall, the food supply here is very safe. I hope those in charge of keeping it that way are paying close attention, especially considering what unfriendlies can attempt to do.

TRUE!!! I never understood Popeye, though. He wasn't strong until he ate his spinach, but he always squeezed that spinach out of those cans. Those cans were made of steel and were quite resilient. How in the hell did he do that?

    Re: Tainted Spinach

The tainted spinach came from an organic farm in California, and it was processed only in plastic packages. I was in LA over the weekend and that was the story given out. However e coli contamination can come from anything, anywhere.

That's a good one - never heard that before. Come to think of it, he could turn his pipe into a freekin blowtorch to open the lid too - what's up with that?

I ate spinach this week and feel stronger for it. Anyway, I never believe what the media tells me.

Cans in the 1930s were very poorly made (tin, not steel) and opened very easily. There was a Depression on and it was not considered cool to make it hard to access a food source.

    Re: Tainted Spinach

I heard it was bagged salad spinach (leaves) that may have been contaminated. That didn't stop me from leaving them out of my girlfriend's Subway sandwich.

Mainly bagged salads. Canned and frozen appear to be safe, so Bluto is STILL getting his ass kicked regularly.
