Um, I'm seriously starting to think that Cash must do whatever it takes to sign this guy if he's posted this off-season. This pitch is SICK...like a splitter, except if you threw a splitter on a planet with 2x the gravity of Earth.

Wow that was awesome. Hes definitely going to command a great deal of money and the only significant money being shed off the payroll is Sheffield, who is being replaced by Abreu, and Mussina. The Yankees might have a take a massive payroll hit to sign this guy or any pitchers next season especially since they will almost certainly resign Moose.

Can't have enough pitching. That's my motto. Especially young pitching. Sign the kid and see if Moose would accept an $8M contract (something similar) with a team option for 2008. Then you have a rotation of:

    1.Johnson
    2.Wang
    3.Mussina
    4.Pavano
    5.Matsuzaka

Waiting in the wings: Clippard and Hughes.

Just outta curiosity, and I haven't heard much of anything on it or may have missed it, but is Jaret Wright's contract certain to be voided? That would make me really happy, but on the flip side he is a cheap investment, which can backfire.

EDIT: He has a 4M buyout or 7M option. It can go either way.

I doubt they'll exercise the option. It's only $3M more to have him here than to release him. While you have to be wary of him reverting to what he did last year, $3M is a bargain if he can duplicate what he did this year. I'd be pretty surprised if he's not brought back, unless he absolutely implodes in the next month.

Jaret hasn't been great, but he hasn't been horrible either. For $3M more, I would exercise the option.

For $3M, I'd rather use it to go towards re-signing Dotel.

Or they could trade Matsui and free up some cash.

We would still have the Japanese connection, and some major bucks.

OF? Abreu, Damon, Melky. I'll take it.
Maybe sign Shef as a pure DH

Shef as pure DH means Giambi permanently at first.

We will have just signed a Japanese player, though..

Trade Mats to the Giants to replace their retiring LF (name escapes me)...replace one major draw, with another major draw....and Japan is closer to SF, than NYC

Get Schmidt in return, to replace RJ when he retires after we win the WS this year

I wouldn't mind trading matsui either, but I think he is more likely to stay then sheff, just because he is already under contract. Maybe he could learn how to play 1b/dh? Or we could move matsui to CF where he played in Japan and have damon learn 1st. Damon is beat up, if we move him to first maybe we can preserve him. Matsuis arm is better then damons.

Matsui for Schmidt?? Thats the worst man lol. I would definitely trade Matsui only for pitching, but Schmidt? Now something along the lines of Carpenter or Oswalt sounds much much better.

BTW the Giants leftfielder is on the cover of this weeks MAD Magazine.

I agree. I really dont wanna see Melky become the 4th outfielder especially after he started everyday for most of this season. He really has proven himself.

PS Who wouldve thought we would come to this after Trot Nixon hit that ball last season

    I don't think it is...err...lol . As a DH Shef>>Mats

We get a stud pitcher...at the very least a #3, for a player we really have no position for---and which other team know we have no position for

Yeah I know... that just shows how strong the melkmans mind is. That's a big series and a tough environment to mess up like that in. But he perseveered and worked his way back up. Props to him, and he should be rewarded by keeping the strating spot next season

Also, him becoming the 4th outfielder pushes Bernie to not only the bench but also off this team since he definitely is not the full time DH type.

EDIT: Bernie has been pretty solid for us and I think hes got one more good year left off the bench. It would be sad to see him end elsewhere.

If we win a WS this year do you think Bernie will retire? I think Guiel could be our 4th OF next year

I doubt Bernie is looking for another WS to retire. He's got 4 already. I think at this point in his career he's playing for the game and his enjoyment. He took a massive paycut just to enjoy (Atleast thats what I like to think). I'm also not a big fan of Guiel. He is the Stinnet of outfielders. Ok thats mean..hes much better. But knowing the yanks philosophy of power hitters on the field and for-average hitters on the bench, I doubt he fits in.

yeah i guess, but bernie was going to get a paycut no matter what. He didn't just "take on for the team" anyways next year wise i would go with this.

    Damon 1B/DH
    Jeter SS
    ABreu RF
    Giambi DH/1B
    Arod 3B
    Matsui CF
    Cano 2B
    Jorge C
    Melkman LF

    Wang
    Matsuzaka
    Pavano
    Randy
    Lidle?/Karstens?/White?

    Mo
    Farns
    Dotel
    Proctor
    Beam
    Bruney

Moose is going to be what 39 next year? Im afraid that this groin injury and other future nagging injuries that may come with age are going to hurt him. I dont think he wil lhave a repeat performance of this season next year. His option is too much dough, and i wouldn't want him signed for 2 or 3 years.

In that clip he tops out at 150 kilometers, which would be 93 miles an hour. Most of the game though he sits at 91. I could have sworn there was talk of him throwing far harder.
Wilbon: What is it specifically about Arod that guys like Schill and Trot Nixon just can't stand?

Kornheiser: He's better looking, he's cooler, he's got all the money. That's what they can't stand.

I don't think we could trade Matsui for Carpenter or Oswalt straigt up, I don't think the Cards or the Astros would do that. Especially with Matsui coming off injury. I think we need to keep him here and go after Matsuzaka. That pitch was sick and he really impressed me in the WBC.

    Where do you play him?

If the OF, do you sit Melky?

(Not being a smart ***, I'm truly curious)

My take is, the minute that Melky proved he could be a more than decent LF and that we signed Abreu, Mats' days here were numbered. The choice became Mats or Shef as DH. You could certainly argue it either way, I guess...Mats' higher av vs Shef's greater power. I just think that the opportunity to replace Mats' Japan PR value with this Mats', tips the scales in Shef's favor. I absolutely could be wrong of course.

yeah in the WBC he was hitting 95,96...but maybe the japanese guns arent "juiced" so to speak. Just like how I think th eyankee stadium radar gun adds 2 mph maybe the WBC does? All i know is he has a lot of movement on that gyro ball, i would love to have this guy

Moose (Just 1 year. If necessary pick up 19m option), Matsuzaka, Wang, Pavano, Johnson
Wright: Pavano insurance, spot starting, trade at the deadline
Hughes, Clippard if there is an injury and they are excelling @ AAA. No rush. Full time in 2008 when Mussina and Johnson leave.

That pitch has crazy movement to it. Pitches from a righty that go in the direction of down and in (northwest to southeast) against righty batters are rare, wicked and almost unhittable. And he seems to be throwing some smoke too.

I really wouldn't mind having lidle around for another year. He's a very solid 5th starter.

I think some of us might be getting in over our heads with Lidle. He is a nice fifth starter but will likely command quite a bit more than he is worth in free agency, he has also been a notorious second half pitcher his entire career.
Wilbon: What is it specifically about Arod that guys like Schill and Trot Nixon just can't stand?

Kornheiser: He's better looking, he's cooler, he's got all the money. That's what they can't stand.

He's said himself that he doesn't throw a "gyroball". Its a split.

i've heard of this gyroball, supposedly its one of the safest pitches you can throw (on the arm) if done correctly. Thats some sick movement, i think he's doing it right

Lidle will likely want at least two years, and command more money than he's worth if he does well in NY. He'd likely be a "type B" free agent in that case, and I want the pick.

I've been a big fan of Matsuzaka's now since before the 2006 season. I would really like to see him in pinstripes.

    Nice pitch!!

In the clip I posted, you can see the grip he's using, and its not a splitter grip...

That clip from WBC has an even better example of the "gyroball" or whatever it is. I can't recall if I've ever seen a pitch move like that!

He doesn't throw a gyroball. Look on YouTube, there's a video of a kid in CA who throws one. It breaks from the right handed batter's box over the plate in a big swoop.

I don't know what he's throwing or what grip he's using, but that thing moves like a freakin' wiffle ball.

So what you're saying is that could just be his version of a splitter or a forkball? And not this mysterious gyroball thing which supposedly taxes the hell out of one's arm?
