"PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight."

Oddly, last week, they floated a plan that would have increased the number of planets to 12. I guess Ceres, Charon, Pluto and Xena will now have to be satisfied with being "dwarf planets".

The only reason Pluto isn't a planet is because it's orbit intersects Neptune's... oh well.

If they want to change the definition of what a "planet" is, then great - but Pluto should have been "grandfathered" in. I mean, it's been a planet since 1930!

Pluto's oblique shaped orbit definitely played a role in this decision, but if that was the case Neptune wouldn't be a planet either for the same reason.

I agree with the decision to demote Pluto.
If it were just discovered today it wouldn't be considered a planet.

I disagree with it in a nostalgic sense, but from a scientific perspective, I agree with the decision.

There are going to be so many more "dwarf planets" discovered in the future, that it's best to distinguish between them and classical planets.

Re: Pluto No Longer a Planet

There's no doubt in my mind that this is the right decision. The decision to make it a planet was based on things thought to be true in the 1930s but since proven false (the existance of the Kuiper belt was not yet known, and Pluto was thought to be much larger than it actually is). Not to mention the fact that they thought it was Planet X - the planet distorting Neptune's orbit - until Einstein proved there was no Planet X like astronomers thought there was (plus, the size of Neptune was not yet fully known at the time).

But still, rumor has it that the Plutonians are plotting to attack Earth. So much for the War on Terror, it seems it is time for the War on Pluto!

Just because Pluto has now been classified as a dwarf planet doesnt mean it's not a planet. Are dwarves no longer human beings? I dont think it's fair to diminish Pluto either.
