Apparently 3 teen boys (2 17 yr olds and an 18 yr old) were out driving and the driver lost control. He was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the car and killed. The other 2 were wearing their seatbelts and while they did suffer injuries, they are not life threatening.

Alcohol was apparently a factor. I hope they find out who they got the alcohol from.

I know, and the saddest thing is that it could have been prevented by 1) not drinking and driving, and 2) wearing a seatbelt.

I might change my tune when I have kids in that age range but I'm a big believer in making sure that teenagers have cab fare... so they don't drink & drive and/or they don't get into a car that's driven by a drunk friend. I realize that they'll try to pocket the money & probably try to spend it on a case of beer but they need to know from the get-go how dangerous drinking & driving is. (Yeah, yeah, "It'll never happen to me. I'm immortal.")

Many Kids look older than they are, and it is easy to falsify age on official documents.

After 9/11 people were quick to try to pin the blame on 1) the airlines 2) airport security, 3) the designer of the Twin Towers, 4) the FBI for not following up on nebulous leads and preventing the tragedy, 5) Bush for being the President on watch. Everyone but the ones responsible , the Terrorists group. Bib Laden and Al Quida.
Don't waste time trying to blame the source of the alcohol. Put the blame where it belongs, on the kids who drove and rode drunk.

I truly feel sorry for them, but they should carry the full blame, no one else.

I have told my daughter (even though she is not yet in with the driving crowd), if she ever gets into a situation she knows is wrong, or she feels uncomfortable, she can call me, no questions asked, no matter what the hour.
I would rather be awoken at 1 am to go pick her up somewhere, than to be awoken at 1 am for a dreaded phonecall.

Now, I don't let her stay out past 10 or 11 anyway and she is not yet allowed to be out with just friends, but the time will come.

One of my best friends, who's now 25, said her mom did this for her and her brother. Her mom would buy it for them and take them to friends' parties or buy it for them for parties they had at home, and say, "I'd rather know you're getting it from me and that you're with people I know, than to not know who's giving it to you or where you are." I disagree with that, but it happens.

This is a very sad story. I feel horrible for the kid's family, but it was his own bad judgment, just like Nome said.

I think it's just the fact that they're too drunk to use proper judgment. Even if they had the cab fare, or if they were free to call parents, they just want to be out joyriding.

It's my worst nightmare, especially with my older daughter, who unfortunately right now is just trying to fit in.

Its something that all kids do. We all know someone who died while drunk driving or speeding. Nothing wil ever change that. There were times albeit when I was a little older, I wonder how I made it home.
No matter how much you tell kids not to drink and drive, its going to happen. Not to mention buckling up.

I live in NJ and heard this story on the news. The poor parents and families. My heart goes out to them. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

And my mom always told us to call if we were drunk, the driver was drunk, we were in a bad situation, etc. She always told us she would come get us and our friends anyplace, anytime, anywhere. We wouldn't be grounded or be in trouble. It worked because we always knew we had a way out if we needed it. My mom's a smart
sweetie.
