Gary Matthews Jr will probably get one.
Burns: I wonder if this Homer Nixon is any relation?
Smithers: Unlikely, sir. They spell and pronounce their names differently.

Raffy Palmiero will get some consideration I'm sure.

...oh, one more thing. They should have a Gold Glove Award for the DH and David Ortiz should win it.

Shouldn't they have an award for the best base stealer? The Platinum Legs Award or something?

It's the Titanium Toe Award. Coco Crisp is gonna win it.

They should definitely give a Gold Glove to ARod. He's made only 22 errors. I would have made at least 150 by now. So he's better than me.

The way Alex is playing in the field he might be using a gold glove.

I don't think he's won a gold glove yet, so he must have stolen one. That dirty thief!

Wasn't that Jeter's glove that Rivera stole? Or was it a bat? Maybe it was batting gloves. I can't remember.

Posada's been playing like a very good defensive catcher this year. He's been throwing a ton of runners out. Maybe next year if he doesn't lose his arm strength and works on blocking the plate more, he could win one.

Mariano Rivera borrowed a stick of gum, Jeter overreacted, and accused Mariano's cousin of stealing his glove, Ruben threw his arm out in a Milwaukee doubleheader and ruined his career, and Juan took the blame. Sierra has a plastic glove, Aaron Small is not very good. Sierra Mist tastes better than Sprite.

I think Posada's improvement still keeps him on a rung below Pudge.

How do Jorge's defensive statistics match up to Pudge's this year?

    Jorge's been great for us.

Haven't even glanced at the stats, but I know from commentary that Pudge was throwing out 10% more base stealers. I'd say Pudge is having a Pudge like year... meaning very good defensive year.

Pudge hasn't won a Gold Glove since his Texas days. Based on his much improved caught stealing numbers, I thought Jorge had a shot this year. But, then,Varitek won it last year so, obviously, the number of runners caught stealing doesn't count for much.

You've got to have elite pitch calling skills and the ability to turn pitchers into aces to be a candidate for the Gold Glove award.

Sorry 'bout that. I mistakenly thought Molina had a 3-year run prior to Varitek winning last year.

Mark Ellis and Eric Chavez of the A's have remarkably few errors. They will definitly contribute to the vote.
In addition, you forget Omar Vizquel, who is probably going to get another gold glove.

You mean the same Derrek Lee that missed about 2/3 of the season? That one? I think Pujols deserves mention for stellar play at 1B.

After Palmeiro got the GG for 12 games in the field, anything is possible

Perhaps because there wasn't a clear cut winner that year. Pujols' defense at 1B has been exceptional.

Re: Who will get the Gold Glove Awards this year?

Bob, perhaps you haven't read Win Shares by Bill James. It turns out that Tino Martinez in 1999 (the year Palmeiro won the GG with 28 games at first) had the one of, if not the very best defensive season that a first baseman has ever had.

It was a horrific, incredibly awful award choice. It was historically bad.

I have heard of win shares . I didn't remember what year Palmiero won it, just that he had. I'm sad that Tino was robbed in that event .

Historically bad as that choice may have been, Pujols has more than earned the award in my view. I don't know his defensive stats, so I might be wrong, of course; but by God, I've witnessed him make some amazing plays.

There is no chance that Jorge overtakes Pudge. Pudge's rate of throwing at runners is at like 51%, Jorge's is at like 37.

Do you have the numbers indicating how many runners had attempted to run on each of them this season?

Re: Who will get the Gold Glove Awards this year?

The AL GG awards are announced today.

I'm expecting plenty of heated debate.

Well, EEI is reporting that Jeter will get it at SS, and Eric Chavez at 3B. FWIW.

They need a new system, these GG's don't have much value anymore. How are we supposed to take them seriously if DJ/Varitek win GGs?
