How To Combat Hawk's Annoying: He Gone

I've been watching the Yankee game tonight and Ken Harrelson annoys me as it is, but I really hate it when he uses that "He gone" whenever a Yankee strikes out.

Since Randy Johnson has been striking out quite a few White Sox, I've been doing a bit of announcing myself each time a White Sox player goes down on strikes by saying: "He Gone! He Gone!"

When Bobby Abreu just belted his first Yankee homer, I yelled out, "It Gone!"

These are the kind of games I love to see Harrelson suffer through. Let's go for the Full Monty.
The Yankees have been blessed with great players over the years. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and now Mark Teixeira to name a few.

Re: How To Combat Hawk's Annoying: He Gone

Johnson had a no-hitter going until the 7th and Harrelson almost fell out of the booth when Iguchi got a hit. I guarantee no one would want that ugly looking green shirt he's got on. He is annoying, but not as much as Jon Miller of ESPN whom I just cannot tolerate at all. It's either the radio with Dave Campbell or no sound at all, just the picture.
Rocky Colavito was a colorful ballplayer that I would love to see in the Hall of Fame. He had a rifle of an arm and hit 374 lifetime home runs, none of them with a corked bat, either. He finished his career as a member of the New York Yankees and retired the same year as Mickey Mantle.

Re: How To Combat Hawk's Annoying: He Gone

Do you still think Jon Miller is worse after hearing "Homer Hawk" slobbering all over himself after Crede's homer to make the game 7-6? If we don't win this game, I'm going up on the roof and jumping off. From 7-0 to 7-6 is disgraceful. Farnsworth cannot be trusted. And "Homer Hawk" isn't going to suffer enough if the Sox lose by only 1 run.

I admit it Mack, you're right. I wanted to strangle Harrelson after he erupted with joy in the 8th. He's a horrible announcer. He forgets that people who get MLB and root for the Yankees don't want to listen to him root for the White Sox the whole game. A regular fan could do his job.

Right now, in the 9th, I have the sound OFF! Posednik? He Gone! 2 outs! One more to go to shut Harrelson up. YAHOOOOOOO! The White Sox? They gone and so is "Homer Hawk" as you call him.

Give me an example. Maybe I've heard it but it doesn't register because it's not against our Yankees.

You're not doing it right on the homer call.. You're supposed to go "STRETCH STRETCH.. YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOOOOOOARD, YES!!" (That's their signature call and yes, they do it against ALL opponents...)

Watching the White Sox lose is awesome because of this guy. The complete shock in his voice when something bad happens to the White Sox is priceless.

Re: How To Combat Hawk's Annoying: He Gone

Wow...I just went and watched the highlight of Crede's three run bomb.

Harrelson's voice sounds like it's going out when he yells, "JOE...CREDE!" after the home run.

Re: How To Combat Hawk's Annoying: He Gone

Why the hatred for Jon Miller? He's not biased, and he has a great broadcast voice. Yeah, it's annoying when he's cheering for the opposition, but he does a fair amount of cheering for both sides.

harrelson is the worst announcer in baseball. he's been this bad for decades.

almost annoying as the 'he gone' butchering of our native tongue is the homo-esque tandem HR calls.

No, actually I meant he uses it against the White Sox.

The final batter of Proctor's 3K inning, he said 'wow - he gone'

Probably b/c his partner said something along the lines of - we beat the great Mariano Rivera, should we just chalk up the win now? (referring to Proctor coming into the game)

I think I like Miller the most out of all the ESPN crew. He seems to really enjoy doing the games no matter who's playing. And he doesn't seem to be egregiously for one team over any other while announcing.

Buck Martinez was getting on my nerves yesterday but I've been in a pissy mood all week. It seemed everybody was getting on my nerves.

Yeah, Miller sometimes says stuff that makes me wonder if he pays any attention at all, but isn't particularly annoying. He's not a patch on the team that is to me "nails-on-chalkboard": Chris Berman and Joe Morgan.

As for Harrelson: I didn't pay attention to the names of the announcers, but back during Interleague play I caught about half of a Sox/Cubs game on WGN. The episode that best describes the homerism of one of the announcers (who I assume from comments here was indeed Harrelson) came when a Cub flared a ball off the end of the bat toward the line in short right. As the ball was coming down, the announcer in question was pratically screaming, "Get foul! GET FOUL!" Then for the next two innings he kept talking about "that wounded duck" as if it were a personal affront to him that the ball landed fair. (Although I guess that since it was a "wounded duck" he did indeed "get foul" like he wanted. )

I agree , I like Miller. I dislike Morgan, not because he is such a bad announcer, but I get tiired of his "our big red machine was the best team that ever walked the earth schtick".
He really started pumping that out in 1998 when we were slaying all comers with ease, and every time he showed up to do one of our games it was like "this is a good team, but nothing like our red machine."
Too bad his red machine would have gotten steamrolled by the 1998 team, and oh by the way, our dynasty took home 4 titles, and 3 in a row..

Finally... game time. Only thing I'm not looking forward to is Homer Hawk, and whoever his color man is, he is terrible too. I don't understand how they've got two terrible announcers... get somebody decent.

And by the way, their home run call is the most annoying, piece of ................ excuse for a call EVER. "STRETCH!" I mean, what in the hell does that mean? And then Homer Harrelson, "You can put it on the boaaaarrd...." and this is the best part, he tries to make his color guy guess when he wants to say, "YEEES!"

    Alright, thank God, baseball.

P.S. The over/under line on how long it takes me to mute the T.V. is 30 minutes. Place your bets now.

Ok, I just have to say that I simply love this thread. I love listening to all of you hating on Harrelson. I used to watch the White Sox games to see the other teams (never, mind you, to watch the Sox), but it just became too much. The pain I was suffering through was simply not worth it. And to think I thought that I was the only one who couldn't stand him....

Welcome, SportsGirl4. Harrelson was bad enough last night, but tonight he's just intolerable since the White Sox are winning 5-2. Plus the Yankees are striking out left and right which means the volume level is now at zero.

For your enjoyment, I am doing EXTRA hating on Harrelson tonight. I would just love it if we came back and won it in the late innings and Homer Hawk had to down about 10 Prosac to help bring him out of the depression.

Edit: Well look at that. No sooner posted and Cabrera puts us back in the game with a 2-run homer silencing the Hawk. He's in shock!

That's the way, Rock! That extra hating paid off with a 2-run blast by Cabrera. Another thing I don't like about this station. They never show a Yankee highlight. Cabrera hits the homer and that's the last time you see it. If Chicago does something, they can't show it enough. They're pretty naive to think all fans turning in are rooting for the White Sox. Alright, let me join you in some good solid hating of the Hawk and maybe we can pull this game out.

    1) We ChiSox fans love Hawk in the booth for the most part because it keeps him OUT OF THE GENERAL MANGER SUITE.

    2) Overall we enjoy the cheerleading when we win. You hear his phrases all over Chicago now. Like if someone gets fired at work, you hear "HE GONE" in the hallways as the guy is walking out.

    3) We hate his excuses and he annoys us when we lose though! He makes excuses like we are stupid and can't see through his bullcrap.

    4) He annoys the hell out of Cub fans, so we like that a lot. And he is infinitely more talented than Ron Santo, hard to believe someone is way worse than Hawk in this town.

Yes, they say it against all opponents but it sounds so annoying. Sterling is annoying too with his nursery rhyme-like home run calls, but Hawk is just vomit-inducing.

I guess because it seems like every time he does a Yankee game, we get off to a good lead (let's say 4-0) and then when the other team comes back, he gets all excited. It's because I don't want the opposition to score at all.

And the funny thing is, I'm one of the few people who actually like listening to Joe Morgan. I don't mind him at all, even when he talks about the Big Red Machine. Remember it was Joe Morgan's single in the 9th inning of Game 7 of the WS in 1975 that helped defeat Boston, 4-3, keeping the curse alive. How can any Yankee fan NOT like the guy for doing us that favor?????

From ESPN I enjoy listening to Miller, Morgan, and Hershiser. Miller has a good voice and experience, and Morgan & Hershiser have great analyses of the plays going on.

They were 2 great players who did not have an enormous amount of athletic ability; they just know how to flat-out play.

I agree, I lived with a White Sox fan for awhile and I got used to Hawk and actually started enjoying him. It probably helped that my friend made fun of him and had some great stories about him but he's really not that bad unless the White Sox are playing your team. I actually dislike his partner DJ alot more.

The White Sox and LA Angels of San Bernadino/Riverside/Encino/Anaheim broadcast teams are far and away the most annoying of all the MLB teams.

I totally agree with this analysis, though sometimes I think that Joe likes to talk just to hear his voice. One person I cannot stand is Rick Suttcliffe. Oh Lord. On and on and on and on....give me a break, please. And I know I'm being nit-picky here, but the tone of your voice is supposed to go down at the end of a sentence...not up!! Thank you, I feel better having gotten that off my chest.

Personality is one thing, but he borders on unprofessional at times.

Amazing coincidence that I can't stand him and I'm a Cub fan. Pretty much everything about the White Sox annoys me. Most of the time I just try to pretend that they don't exist. That's actually been working for me for quite awhile now. Well, except for when somebody comes to town to play the Sox that I want to see. Dang it, then I have to watch them.

And just as amazing is the fact that I love Ron Santo! Poor guy spends more time lamenting than he does doing color commentary. If only our team could give him something to cheer about.

i really could never like this clown no matter who i rooted for. its one thing to have a little more excitment in your voice when the home team hits a homerun. but to actively root for the home team ?? people get on sterling for being a homer and meantime hes not even a quarter of the homer that some of these announcers are. especially hawk. i used to hate sterling's cheesy homerun calls but now i find them funny. the only thing i dislike is when he jumps the call. cant stand that. and i couldnt stand steiner. never had a good description of what was going on, didnt know the players names, and was constantly making mistakes. and he made sterling worse because they competed with each other. but hawk is the worst guy in baseball bar none.

Good one! I also like the music on that Bernie Williams CD you have as your Avatar. Smooth jazz is my thing nowadays and Bernie can certainly play the guitar.
The Yankees have been blessed with great players over the years. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and now Mark Teixeira to name a few.

I agree. Sutcliffe always talks very deliberately as though he's going to tell you something really important and it's usually nothing special. He's also a bandwagon jumper during the game. If Boston and New York are playing, and Boston gets off to an early lead, he'll talk up Boston and the great organization they have, blah, blah, blah. When the Yankees come back and take the lead, 5-4, he'll jump ship and get on the Yankee bus saying they've got a lot of hungry young players who just don't give up even being down 4-0. He's full of cliches.

He praises whoever is winning. Big deal. He's one of the reasons that if the same game is on ESPN and NESN, I'll watch the game on NESN. I actually like the Boston announcers Don Cirillo and Jerry Remy a lot more than anyone ESPN has. I feel like ESPN has become the true Boston Nation Station.

Definitely some entertainment value to Ron Santo, especially when he is moaning and complaining. His partner Pat Hughes is 100% class. Best overall announcer in this city by far, sorry Hawk. YES!

I love Pat and Ron together. They complement each other very well. Pat Hughes is very knowledgable and has an amazing dry sense of humor. I've been listening to baseball on the radio for probably 30 years and he's easily one of the best I've ever listened to.
