So we'd have to face both him and Tabata in interleague and the World Series. NO THANKS!

I rather take that chance than facing him 18 times a year along with those other two good players the Orioles have in their lineup.

wilmer flores got called up and faced the R-Dogs today and went 2-5

im sure michael almanzar will get all the hype, but flores looks to be the top 17 year old playing in the states this year

    Yeah he makes good contact.

I saw Wilmer play here in Venezuela last winter. He's still a SS right?, not sure if he'll stick there, he looked kinda tall for a SS, and he's only 17. He certainly has the arm to play 3B.

Pretty impressed with the 8 HR's. I think he only hit like 1 or 2 in his time here.

    Ok thanks.

I'm pretty sure he'll outgrow SS.

He looked kinda tall when I saw him (he's 6'3" according to BA and MiLB), but he's very skinny, once he fills out he's going to be too big for SS.

A bit much, well at least right now. Let's see how he does in full season first.

Btw KG said he has "potential plus-plus raw power".

    Damn...

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

The Jays said they will call up 20-year-old Travis Snider prior to Friday's game.
Snider is a terrific prospect, but he's fanned a whopping 154 times in under five months this year. He was hitting .275/.358/.480 with 23 homers overall between three levels. It'll probably be a couple of years before he's ready to maintain a decent average in the majors, but since the Jays plan on playing him regularly for now, he could have some value in AL-only leagues.

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

The Dodgers will send down Clayton Kershaw to make room for Scott Elbert on Friday.
Kershaw will go right back into the rotation next week, so this is just a paperwork move. We'll see a few more of these as the deadline to set postseason roster nears. In spite of the move, Kershaw will still be eligible to pitch for the Dodgers in October.
Let's see if he's all the way back from shoulder surgery.

Dodgers aren't going to the post season anyway. They were hammered by Philly last weekend. Philly can hit, but they really pounded the Dodgers in that 4 game series.

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

    Bowden gets the call:

BOSTON -- There was a time in April when Justin Masterson had a whole new experience on his hands, making the jump from beginning the year at Double-A Portland to starting a Major League game for the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

He remembers it well. How can a young pitcher forget such an occasion? It's essentially what right-hander Michael Bowden will go through on Saturday when Boston takes on Chicago -- a Major League debut for a hurler who started out the season with the Sea Dogs.

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

So.... who was able to catch Scott Elbert's appeareance tonight?

Fastball 90-91 mph, touched 93 mph, expected more velo, might not be all the way back from shoulder surgery, so-so control, his breaking ball (slider) was very good though, lots of downward movement (rare for a lefty), legitimate strikeout pitch, change not so much, "show me" pitch at this point. HR was on a ball that was supposed to stay down and away, sailed a little over the middle of the plate, not that bad of a pitch actually.

Very impressed. All of his outs so far in his very short ML career (1.2 IP), have been via the strikeout.

  20. #2120

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

Just got done watching Michael Bowden's ML debut.

Funky mechanics/delivery (as expected), windup is kinda strange, he sets up from the strech, then steps back with his left foot, turns right foot to square it up and then goes to the leg kick.

Fastball sat in the 92-93 mph range most of the night, hit both sides of the plate with it, good command, big curve in the mid to uppers 70's, had trouble throwing it for strikes, good break, more of a 11-to-5 curve than a true 12-to-6 hook, best pitch was his changeup though, low to mid 80's, sells it very well (very good arm speed), froze some hitters with hit, excellent pitch.

Very good. I was impressed with the amount of fastballs he threw.

Has the look of a very good middle of the rotation starter.

Jose Tabata is really doing well in AA with Pittsburg. He raised his overall minor league average to .277.

i never thought it was right to trade him, but at least we got pretty good value in return.

    nice job jose.

Jose Tabata in 22 games for Erie: .348/.402/.562. Three homers and 13 RBI.

I'm not surprised that a change in scenery helped him. It'll be interesting to see if he gets a big, inflated ego again once he regains his top prospect status.

considering he was batting .240, raising his average that much in a month as a 20 year old in AA is pretty good.

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

Saw Jonathon Niese's ML-debut tonight on SNY.

Pretty standard 3/4's slot, pitches uphill, 3-pitch guy, fastball 87-89 mph, likes to cut it vs RHB's, so-so control (again... nerves), changeup with good tailing action, 78-80 mph range, 3rd pitch, slow curve in the low 70's, huge break, go-to pitch with 2 strikes.

Not sure what to think of this guy to be perfectly honest with you, off-speed pitches looked "ok" to me, but his fastball looked very hittable, has to locate it if he wants to be successful at this level.

    Keith Law:

John (Portland, ME): Why would Borass not want Alvarez to sign the deal with the Pirates (late or not)? Is it really worth ruining his client's reputation for a couple more bucks a year later?

Keith Law: (1:45 PM ET ) How do we know this isn't what Alvarez wants? No one's asked him (nor can anyone ask him), and the blanket assumption is that this is a Boras vendetta against 1) Frank Coonelly and/or 2) the draft. I just don't buy it. Besides, on the 5% chance that Alvarez is declared a free agent ... well, the Yankees probably have a lot of cash left in their budget that was allotted for their '08 first-rounder, and Alvarez is from the Bronx, and I'd have to imagine they'd offer him $15-20MM if he becomes a free agent.

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

    Another Tábata related question:

Brian (NYC): Keith...Tabata was having a brutal year before his trade to Pittsburg, but since then his numbers have been much better. Did the Yankees sell too soon on him, is this just a blip, or is he starting to flourish in a less stressful environment?

Keith Law: (2:06 PM ET ) Might have been the wake-up call he needed. He'd been mailing it in all year up to the trade. I imagine being dealt from the organization that signed you, especially one as prestigious in Latin America as the Yankees, is a bucket of ice water over your head.

If he does become a FA, and gets his 15 million, next year, every Boras client will ask the same, and all will fall to the Yankees selections at the bottom of the 1st round, and the supplemental picks.
Why not? Boras can string this tune to all his highly-regarded kids.

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

    More:

Nick (Boston): Keith - what are Mr. Buchholz's chances of ever regaining his form? Is he still likely to be a #1 or #2 starter in the majors?

Keith Law: (2:06 PM ET ) Yes, no way I'd give up on him. Chad Billingsley got knocked around in his first go-round in the bigs.

  37. #2137

    Re: Another team's prospects thread

    Jim Callis:

Jake (VA Beach): How much of a travesty would it be if Alvarez became a FA and the Yankees signed him?

Jim Callis: (2:08 PM ET ) I don't think it's likely that Alvarez will become a free agent. With the precedent of a J.D. Drew grievance from 1997, I think the most likely scenario is that the arbitrator will rule that MLB should not have changed the deadline arbitrarily, but because Alvarez isn't a union member, he can't rule on Alvarez' specific fate. I think we'll see MLB get told to not monkey with the deadline in the future, but Alvarez will be left with two options: sign for $6 million or sit on the restricted list, which would prevent him from re-entering the 2009 draft.

The bidding woud be at LEAST to $15-$20 million. I'd say it's probable that it is over $25 million, and if I had to gues, I'd say he gets something in the $30-$40 million range.

really? Well i guess its Boras doing what he does best creating a market where there shouldn't be one and is trying to create leverage out of thin air.

I can't see that happening. Anyway, let's say he was to sign with a team, is he a regular FA? In other words, would it be a $35M contract for 7 years, or would the $$ act as a signing bonus and the team controls his rights?
