DFA question...

Suppose Bubby Crosby was Designated for Assignment today. Since the trade deadline has passed, what would their options be with him?

If I understand correctly, he would be placed on waivers, so if he was claimed and they didn't revoke the waiver, he would go to the team that claimed him with the worse record. If he cleared waivers, they could send him to the minors without consent since he's not a veteran player with 5 years of service, or release him as a free agent.

Am I missing something else, or is this correct?

Most teams put their whole roster through waivers before the end of July to clear the way for August trades. Bubba may have already cleared, but his trade value is not very high. I'm sort of expecting a post-deadline deal of Bubba, Phillips and maybe Small for a serviceable relief pitcher.

1) Why would they even bother putting their stars on waivers?

Just in case a good trade becomes available later. Look at how many trades were reported as almost happening, but didn't. If you didn't have time to finish a trade of Tejada or Soriano, but are still interested in working something out, by having put them through waivers already, you keep that option open. And since you can pull anyone back and lose nothing, there's no harm at all in putting them on waivers. It's a risk-free option.

Hypothetically speaking..... can you DFA a player on the 40 man roster while he is on the DL (as an example, Tanyon Sturtze)?

Right, a lot of teams use this technique. The stars can clear waivers because the small market teams can't afford them and the pennant contenders would have to clear a roster spot and absorb the salary....and they can always be pulled back, unless some bonehead GM mistakenly puts them on irrevocable waivers -- didn't that happen a few years back?

I don't believe you can release a player who is on the DL, but I'm not sure about that. Players who are on the 60-day DL, however, do not count against the 40-man roster, so there would be no roster-related reason to DFA them.
