Steve Phillips gives his take on the Yankees.(ESPN pays this guy?)

Just saw it, not sure if it's previously recorded. Paraphrased:

"The Yankees are looking at Craig Wilson, a 1B/OF/DH type of guy. They're also looking at Hernandez or Torres who they'd love to have in the bullpen. This would further allow them to persue the Proctor for Betemit trade, and it would help their infield defense with A-Rods throwing errors and all."

I always think you are all crazy with this paranoia about anti Yankee bias, but Phillips is the perfect case of this bias.
I have yet to hear him say one positive sentence about the Yankees this season....not one!!!!

I laughed. Tino had some good input about the Mets chasing Zito. That it's a morale booster when you go after a player to put you over the top. He said it was the same when the Yankees got Justice.

Then they do the Yankees next, and this guy just had to include A-Rods throwing errors. Like he's some minor leaguer who can't cut it.

Re: Steve Phillips gives his take on the Yankees.(ESPN pays this guy?)

The reason Phillips is always knocking ARod is because he holds a grudge against him for not signing with the Mets when Phillips was their GM. ARod can't stand Phillips either for saying a lot of negative stuff about him when he was looking to sign with a team. Pure and simple, the Mets couldn't afford ARod and so Phillips had to try to make ARod look bad instead of admitting they didn't have the money to sign him.

Therefore, Steve Phillips can't be taken seriously. Besides, he was a lousy GM and the Mets got rid of him. He signed some of the biggest wastes (or better yet, waists) around, including that big oaf from California, Mo Vaughan, who hardly ever played for the Mets. If Phillips was any good and knew what he was talking about, don't you think another team would have hired him by now? He's just a jerk who fell into the GM job the same way he fell into the ESPN position which he'll lose in time.
Congrats are in order to the 2009 WS Champion Yankees. Let's keep it going!

Why would ESPN hire the guy to be an "expert" analyst when he was a failure as a GM?

At least then it gives credibility to your opening if the last guy got a promotion back "into the game."

Because ESPN specializes in hiring loud mouths who were at one time professionals, albeit sucked. Look at some of their football announcers. Mark Malone?? Sean Salisbury?? Yup, Phillips fits right in there at that rapidly declining network.

I've got an idea for a reality show, that in a sense, would improve baseball for all teams. The team with the worst record has to have Steve Phillips and Tim McCarver take over GM duties for 1 year. The show can focus on fans frustrations, as well as the players. It can give a behind the scenes look at how things are run. Isiah Thomas can be a guest star to help with general managing pointers, and how to deal with the press on bad deals.

ESPN would probably pick it up, but I see Comedy Central being the high bidders.

I guess i should post this here as well. BTW, i posted this before he was on SC tonight in the Olney/Abreu thread.

Steve Phillips doesn't do anything for me when it comes to talking about the trade deadline. Does anyone else notice that he just repeats what was written in the NY papers that day on ESPN like he got it from an inside source?

I haven't had any respect for Steve Phillips the analyst since the beginning of the '05 season when he said on radio that his fearless prediction was that Corey Patterson would go "40/40 in '05, maybe even 50/50".

Well, for those who would like their pound of flesh at Phillips, he will be on 1050 ESPN Radio tomorrow hosting his show from 4pm EST to 6pm EST.

    1-800-919-3776 is the call-in number.

    Let him have it.

Has anybody seen him when he broadcasts live games? He hypes up the fact that he drafted Heilman, Milledge, and Wright.

And the way he does it is irritating, he makes statements like "I wonder what brilliant GM drafted those players, he must be a genius"

He needs to go away for a long time

Phillips hates A-Rod from the time when he was the GM of the Mets and A-Rod didn't sign with them and words were exchanged. Everything he says about him shows his hatred for the guy.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.

After he was fired as Reds GM, I thought Jim Bowden was a much better baseball analyst than Phillips.

I flpped to a game on ESPN the other night. I cant remember who it was, I think two NL teams. Anyways, Phillips was announcing and I turned it on just in time to hear him discussing...... ARod's throwing errors. Phillips is a dipsh*t who never predicts anything even remotely close to correctly.

  30. #30

Re: Steve Phillips gives his take on the Yankees.(ESPN pays this guy?)

Dudes a resentful a$$. Simple as that. He's the one that stirred the ARod should be traded rumor. Whatever-there's a reason you aren't a GM .

I imagine a Deion Sanders, Tim McCarver moment w/ he and ARod when he finally gets a ring.

They should've given this clown the boot along with Harold Reynolds. Just because he's a washed up GM doesn't mean he adds any value to the show. Actually, I thought the real reason they fired Reynolds was b/c he actually agreed with Phillips that Arod should be traded.

One thing you have to grudgingly admire about Phillips, he knows how to "operate." That's the only way to explain how he continues to land high-profile jobs despite having the intellect of a clamshell. He was able to push out a far more intelligent and capable baseball man, Joe McIlvaine, as GM of the Mets (McIlvaine was the one who really did the heavy lifting in getting the Mets back to respectability in the late 1990s — any success they had under Phillips is traceable to the Mets tripling their payroll between the time Phillips came on board in 1997 and their WS appearance in 2000). Then, even though he's yet to make his first intelligent comment as an analyst, he's pretty much ESPN's No. 1 "man on the right" at BBTN now that Gammons got sick. Say this for him, he certainly knows how to polish the apple behind the scenes.

This is too true. I've seen/heard this exact thing at least like 3 times. He should follow that up with a joke about how much money his team wasted on Mo Vaughn if he wants any respect.

Who does ESPN have that isn't an idiot?
True, but even among idiots there is a hierarchy, and Stevie seems somehow to have clawed his way to near the top of it.

FWIW, I don't consider Hershiser an idiot.

Did anyone catch him the other night on BBTN, when Jason Tyner of the Twins made a great catch at the centerfield wall? Phillips burst in with something to the effect of "Who drafted him? I DID!"

He's bragging about drafting Jason Tyner!!!

Not meaning to double post - since I just put this down in the Olney/Abreu thread - but it probably belongs here - Phillips just called the Abreu/Lidle trade "a great move by the Yankees." He smiled, too.
