7.19.06 - SEA @ NYY: All Pregame Info & Discussion

Following last night's phenomenal 5-4, 11 inning victory, the New York Yankees (55-36) won their 5th straight game since returning from the All Star Break. After breaking their 7 game losing streak when a sweep was on the line on Sunday against Chicago, the Yankees will now look to sweep the Seattle Mariners (44-50) this afternoon. With Boston and Chicago both winning last night, it was imperative that the Yanks grind out the victory and maintain their current deficits. The sheer jubilation exhibited by the team following the 9th inning rally, players volunteering to play out of position and the celebration (Larry Bowa!) following Melky Cabrera's GW walkoff HR in the 11th was certainly another reminder of how this team has come together in 2006.

A 2-run rally off of closer JJ Putz tied the game in the 9th inning before Melky Cabrera's walkoff laser 2 innings and a 2 hour rain delay later. NYY starter Sidney Ponson was off at the start, as expected, and yielded a 3-run HR to Richie Sexson in the first inning after two walks. He settled down and pitched into the 7th inning by allowing just 1ER the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Yankee offense chipped away at Joel Pineiro and trailed 4-2 in the 9th. Andy Phillips hit a double to start the inning and was eventually plated by Aaron Guiel's PH sing. With runners on 1st and 3rd following a controversial "safe" call on Jorge Posada at first, Johnny Damon ripped a sac fly to CF scoring Bubba Crosby who pinch ran for Guiel. The skies opened and a torrential downpour then delayed the game for 1:58 with Alex Rodriguez up, Posada on 1st and a 3-1 count. When play resumed, Cabrera was the hero in the 11th.

Today Randy Johnson (10-7, 5.06) matches up with RHP Gil Meche (9-4, 3.87). As has been well documented on these boards, Johnson has much been himself by pitching 7 great starts in his past 9 since Memorial Day. Meche has been even better over the same period and has not lost a decision since May 31st. In June, the Seattle righty went 3-0, 1.60 allowing just 36 baserunners in 33.2 IP. In July the record is 2-0, 4.50 over three starts. After yielding just 2 HR in June, he has already allowed 4 in July. Meche is a flyball pitcher but also has the ability to strike out a batter. He has a solid 2.01 K:BB ratio, 1.32 WHIP and baserunners are just 2/8 stealing this season off of him. We may be witnessing a stat correction for Meche this month in the HR department for in 116.1 IP, he's given up just 15, which isn't a lot for a heavy flyball pitcher.

Key to Randy's start (well, everyone of his starts) is his mechanics. If he's falling off towards the 3B side and finishing his motion, he will pitch very well. If he does not finish it motion, whether it hurts too much for him to finish it all the time or he gets outs without finishing his motion and thinks he can do it.. then expect a long day

I can remember a few games at Yankee Stadium where he was very tough on us. In his career vs. NYY (8 starts) he's 3-2, 4.01. 2-1, 4.44 at Yankee Stadium.

He was 2-0, 0.57 at Yankee Stadium in 2003. Last year in The Bronx he allowed 3 ER over 6.2 IP and received a ND.

I hope the Stadium is still steamy for RJ . We will see if RJ has finally exercised the Perez demons. I expect ARod to go off today. The boys are on a roll, and hopefully we can ride it all the way into Toronto.

I agree. Just look at his better starts for us this season and how those mechanics play into the BB stats and strike %.

His velocity the past few starts has been very good. Going forward, I'm as confident in RJ as any pitcher on the staff not named Rivera.

I'm also hoping for a big day from A-Rod, who has outstanding career numbers against Meche.

I am completely sick and tired of having to read crap from Jay Greenberg of the NY Post about him. Today's article epitomizes just how ridiculous this has all gotten.

This also bears watching, according to Sam Borden of the NY Daily News today:

Jorge Posada took a foul ball off his right index finger in the 11th inning and is questionable for today's game. Torre said Posada was clearly hurting and that the Yanks would have to re-evaluate him this morning.
    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/ba...p-367677c.html

If Posada cannot play, I would go with:

    CF Damon
    LF Cabrera
    SS Jeter
    DH Giambi
    3B Rodriguez
    1B Phillips
    RF Guiel
    2B Green

What do you guy's think about batting A-rod 2nd and have Jeter 3rd and so on.. It seems like torre puts arod in that spot when he needs to turn it around.

I would leave Rodriguez at 4 or 5 because he is a slugger and a run producer. Who would replace him? Jason Giambi? I know Torre shifted him to 2nd in 2004, but we also had Matsui and Sheffield providing those attributes down the line. When we lost Cano, I was a proponent of lengthening the lineup by putting Cabrera 2nd and Rodriguez 5th just because I felt that after a hot Posada or a hot Williams (both are very streaky), a pitcher could develop into a rhythm. Once you navigated your way through 1-4 it would enable the pitcher to take a deep breath and get a 2nd wind very early in the game.

Now, Rodriguez's splits are fantastic except for one category - close and late. With RISP he's at .308/.451./.558 with 8 HR and 50 RBI in 104 AB. His game is elevated with RISP and 2 out as he's at .326/.532/.535 with 3 HR and 17 RBI in 42 AB. Those are big time run producing statistics at a run producing spot in the order. They dwarf the other candidate's, Jason Giambi, by far.

Close and late is another story and he's just going to have to work through it. In 48 AB he's at .188/.264/.313 with 1 HR, 7 RBI and an amazing 14K. The fact the he strikes out nearly a third of the time in pressurized spots late in the game is what resonates with some fans. Even a productive out, anything, instead of a strikeout.

For comparison's sake, in 2005 Rodriguez had the following numbers in "close and late" situations: 75 AB, .293/.418/.520 with 4 HR, 12 RBI and 21 K.

    2004: 80 AB, .275/.359/.438 with 2 HR, 13 RBI and 18 K.

I don't like the vaunted "close and late" statistic. It's too subjective for my tastes.

I would rest him anyway. The guy just needs a full day off, available for pinch hitting (I have decided 2 days of pinch hitting only duty = 1 full day of rest. I am the arbiter of truth). RJ will just have to deal with his former love Stinnett today

Yeah...as much as I hate that thought, it may be best if Posada takes today off and is available to pinch hit. Meche has been dealing as of late though, so I'd like to have Posada in the lineup if he's available.

Meche is a good pitcher so we will definitely need a solid performance from RJ... This will be a tough game with everyone most likely being tired after the game ended at around 12:45 last night.
