I hope they sign Lowe. I watch a lot of Mets games and I'd rather not see Oliver Perez anymore. It's going to be a lot more fun with Putz and K-Rod in the pen.

Right! I kills me that they seem to be able to get top talent at discount rates and that "talent" seems happy to be in Flushing. We overpaid (IMO) for Sabathia and Texeira and, particularly in C.C.'s case, it seems like we had to beg him to play for us.Originally Posted by THEBOSS84

I can see how you could say that about CC, although I think that offer was pretty fair at the end of the day
"Trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late" -- Branch Rickey

You do realize that Santan's contract will vest for a seventh year if he wins the Cy Young once or finishes 2nd or 3rd two more times and only be 3.5M less than CC's contract? That's a very small difference considering that CC was on the open market and in a far better position to negotiate than Santana.Originally Posted by The Q Bomb

- wins Cy Young award from 2008-13 and finishes second or third in the Cy Young vote in one other season
- ranks second or third in Cy Young vote in any 3 seasons, 2008-13
- is on the active roster for the final 30 days of 2013 season, and:
- pitches 215 innings in 2013, or
- pitches 420 innings in 2012-13, or
- pitches 630 innings in 2011-13
WFAN's "Let's Go Mets" agenda is a hoot.
Today's 20/20 update: "The Mets are closing in on signing Derek Lowe."
I know the market is down, but since when does the mere act of submitting a lowball offer to Scott Boras constitute "closing in"? I kinda have a feeling he's going to shop that offer for a while.

Ryan, Snatch, and '62 - I don't see how you can say The Yankees didn't overpay for Sabathia. Maybe the difference in your opinions and mine is relative to the need The Yankees had for him - if you factor that in, if they paid $50 million per year it might be worth it. The way I look at it, however, once they had to add the extra year and money to their original offer, they overpaid - especially as it seems there was no other team even in the neighborhood.
As far as Texeira is concerned, YankeeFaninBoston, I don't feel his talents merit the contract he received, however, you do have a point. He and Sabathia may be worth much more to the team than the sum of their salaries if they perform up to expectations. I will happily eat crow if that is the case.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, folks.

You're the one that compared CC's deal with Santana and we correctly pointed out the error in your POV.Originally Posted by The Q Bomb

Not sure Puma is right about Pettitte or about any Yankee interest in Perez, but the situation could get interesting if Perez signs elsewhere before Lowe is signed
If Pettitte isn't retained - last week a team official told The Post it was "doubtful" the lefty would be re-signed - Boras could push hard to get Perez a contract in The Bronx. That effectively would drive up the price on Lowe, with the Mets knowing their top fallback option no longer is available.
That is assuming, of course, that the Yankees aren't Boras' "mystery" team for Lowe.
I really hope the Yankees stay far away from Perez.
Ive never been hot on Perez as well. Ive just seen him struggle in pennant races the past couple years against bad teams, and its something we dont needOriginally Posted by CallOfTheCrow

Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets, of New York town.
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they're hollerin' and cheerin' and they're jumpin' in their seats,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
All the fans are true to the orange and blue,
So hurry up and come on down -
'cause we've got ourselves a ball club,
The Mets of New York town!
Give 'em a yell! Give 'em a hand!
And let 'em know you're rootin' in the stands!

Oh man!!! In 2002, me and my friends made up a song about how horrible the Mets were at the time. I'll post it, but it has a lot of old players since basically no one on the 2002 mets is on the 2009 Mets.
