He explained to you what ERA+ is. It's a BETTER stat than ERA.

So you're the one who's cherry picking.

Of course the Mets ERA would be depressed if their pitchers got to face Florida and DC 40 times.

Its not a cherry picked stat. Its a better indicator of measuring a pitchers worth.

Re: The New York Mets Thread

Mets fans have a right to get giddy. They are a hot team and they're playing well. I have strong feeling that come playoff time, if they happen to make it to the Series (which, obviously, is not guaranteed), they may be embarassed. They have an AL style offense, but they're starting pitching is a huge question mark. I don't understand how Mets fans can be so puffy chested when they're supposed top two starters are on the DL--1 with reasonable injury concerns and the other one in the midst of a second half slump. I was listening to sports radio and I heard Met fans really confident about the fact that Trachsel and El Duque are legit 3-4 combo. Unless the game of baseball throws us a curveball this year, I expect a huge disappointment from the Mets. Bullpen and lineup are above average. But they're starting rotation is really not that good. Perhaps I'm just looking at the rotations of the AL teams and that's why I feel that way, but things just don't add up. I really find it hard to believe that a Mets fan can be confident in winning it all when they're starters are a huge question mark.

I remember the morning after the Mets got smoked by the Red Sox. Boy were Mets fans depressed, saying how they need to get starters. That's when the questions really began to surface, could the Mets, let alone any team handle an AL team if they were to go to the World Series? I just don't understand what has changed their opinion since then.

The Mets are a decent team. They are the class of a pathetic NL. Put them in the AL....and they are behind the Yanks, RSox, Twins, ChiSox, Tigers and A's. They would be on the level of the Angels and BJays.

ERA+ takes the stadium out of the equation. Using ERA means there is no difference between a pitcher in Colorado (hitters park) or a pitcher in SD (pitcher's park).

The Yankees have picked up castoffs from several different teams, with varying degrees of success.

I can't speak to the Hernandez quote though.

Hmmm---Kind of like in October, 2000, when all Met fans swore their team was better and just hit a rough patch at the wrong time????

Cardinal Fan still here and Breathing. Went to the game last night.Cardinals will be LUCKY to be in the playoffs this year. (The Jim Mora meltdown comes to mind here)

    30 games left

Tied with Cincy for the division lead.

It is fun to be in a pennant race again, may the best team win.

Yeah, last night was a pretty pathetic loss. Not that the other two were any less demoralizing, but once again, a salad tossing lefty kills the Cardinals.

This game was awful to watch.

Belliard is not a leadoff hitter.

Taguchi should not be in the starting lineup ever, IMO...and he should definitely never bat in front of Pujols.

    Marquis...*sigh*

Pujols is still expanding his zone.

    Our outfield defense is bad.

Tyler Johnson against a righthanded hitter should never, ever, happen...and his recent lack of control/effectiveness against lefties isn't exactly encouraging either.

I wish our owner was a stripper who's husband had died before the beginning of the season and our players could use a cardboard cutout, with ever-so removable pieces, of hers as inspiration.

Glavine is set to start the September 1st game:
Left-hander Tom Glavine will return to the Mets' rotation next Friday in Houston, FOXSports.com has learned.

Glavine, 40, had wanted to pitch Wednesday in Colorado, but the Mets will start left-hander Dave Williams that night, giving Glavine additional time to recover.

It's all because of the roster move. They'll DL Glavine retroactively, and then activate him on the day he's eligible which coincidentally is that September 1st game.

I watched Oliver perez since he's been in the league. He be a better middle relief pitcher than a starter.

ahead on the count to Howard and he grooves one over the middle of the plate. Same ole Oliver

Actually Perez's stuff isnt nearly as good as it was in 04. The Pirates messed with his mechanics to fix his control. Well his control is still crap and he lost a ton of velocity and tilt on his slider. Also rumours revolving around arm problems have been circulating a bit as well.

How? He isnt throwing the ball any better than he was a year ago. He's had injury problems and i highly doubt he'll go back to throwing his 98 MPH heater.

I don't ever think Perez will ever be a dominant pitcher because of his erratic fastball command.. but they got him for Xavier Nady. It's a steal for a guy with the upside of Perez.

These days it usually comes in around 88 which is why he was getting killed this year. He also has lost some major bite off his slider too. He is damaged goods and will go down as a one year wonder IMO.
