Instead of picking up his $5.9 million salary for the 2000 season, the team pledged to pay him $1,193,248.20 each July 1st from 2011 to 2035 -- nearly $30 million all told.
By the time 2035 comes along, $1.2 mil might be chump change.May have made sense at the time, but they still were better off paying him the $5.9 mil instead of paying him not to play. They may have thought "11 years from now it will be someone else's problem."

Someone recently conducted a study and came to the conclusion that it would take them about seven years to recuperate. Lets see how accurate this prediction is.

    On a more interesting note...

DENVER -- Johan Santana and Oliver Perez each underwent successful surgery this morning at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Santana had successful arthroscopic removal of multiple bone fragments from his left elbow, while Perez underwent successful removal of scar tissue from the patella tendon of his right knee.

Santana and Perez are expected to be fully recovered for the start of spring training, according to the Mets. Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek performed both procedures today.

When it rains, it pours. Literally. First the rusting beams at the entrance and now this? Looks like Mets ownership got ripped off in more ways than one.

The Mets' new $850 million stadium is breaking down at about the same rate as its beleaguered lineup, the Post has learned.

Less than a season old, Citi Field has been plagued by water damage to several luxury suites -- including Jerry Seinfeld's -- as well as mold, falling signs and concrete, flooding in outfield seats, faulty electrical wiring and shoddy tile work, sources said.

Yankees fans must have built the place," an insider scoffed.

"Sh- - -y Field -- that's what we call it."

Can you believe that? I mean, can anyone invent everything wrong with the Mets into a screenplay and not be laughed out of the producers office because it's so unbelievable?

I've said it before, but the baseball gods are exacting payback for the Mets building a shrine to the Dodgers instead of to themselves

I agree. What has happened to the Mets this year is quite bizzare in every aspect. I honestly can't recall anything remotely similar happening to another contender in baseball history. As you said, building a shrine to the Bklyn Dodgers instead of themselves probably has a lot to do with their misfortunes. I can't say that I feel sorry for them, though.

I spoke with a bunch of Met fans this weekend. The consensus wish is for the Wilpons to be forced out due to losses with Madoff. It's pathetic, but true. I am actually pulling for this to happen. Get a new owner, clean house, lose Minaya. Oh, and please rename the stadium ! Best T shirt I have seen at the new park... " I'm still calling it Shea " I guess it is a long shot .

Let us have our small victories ok?

This season was lost a long time ago, but its nice to have a legit 3 and 4 hitter both in our lineup at the same time. Let us rejoice in that.

Buffalo & Binghamton ranked among the worst teams in all of Minor League Baseball. They're two of the top 4 with Binghamton coming in 1st.

They also had to contend with a shirtless Tony Bernazard. That could not have been pleasant.

Manuel says Reyes and Delgado might return after all this season. Not really buying it. But maybe we will get an entire week of our supposed lineup out there. (Assuming nobody else gets hurt b/w now and then which is a pretty big assumption)

My thoughts exactly. Can't really feel sorry for the Yankee-hating-due-to-their-inferiority-complex fans. I remember the trash talk when the Yanks lost the first game of the season to the Orioles. Who's laughing now?

Re: The New York Mets Thread

They really get worse with each passing day it seems. I can't wait until this season is over.

They've actually gotten some surprsingly good starts from the scrap heap starters, but on those days (and most others) the offense is just dreadful. Wright's really been struggling the past week...something like 3-30, and Angel Pagan one of the few who actually has been hitting negates his offense, by running the bases like a chicken with his head cut off.

Mets have been such a disappointment, the best thing that could ever happen is if the Wilpons sell out

  36. #4136

Re: The New York Mets Thread

I don't really think this season is on the Wilpons. If it is true about the money problems than they should sell, but they've spent plenty for season and the past couple seasons. The problem is that some of that money wasn't spent wisely, and even more of that money landed on the DL.

Yes, spent by the main problem Omar Minaya. Yet the Wilpons saw it fit to give him a 3-year extension

Well Minaya overall has done a good job. The Mets are still in a much better state since he took over than they were during the late Phillips era and brief Jim Duquette era. And Omar's mistake money wise was giving Ollie the 3 year deal which happened after he got the extension. But every gm has their clunkers... like Cashman and Pavano, Igawa, etc.

Re: The New York Mets Thread

David Wright just owned the Phillies. 2 HR's and 6 RBI's. Phillies had a 9-5 lead and lost 10-9. Madson gave up a 2 run shot to Wright in the top of the 9th.

  40. #4140

Re: The New York Mets Thread

Yeah that was the best win the Mets had in a long time. Pretty bittersweet though thinking about what could have been this season, and how these games should have more meaning than they do, but its always nice to get a good win. Its especially nice to see some flashes of the Wright of old.

  41. #4141

Re: The New York Mets Thread

And just for good measure, one more knife to the gut from the season from hell. The Mets were officially eliminated from contention tonight after losing the second game of the doubleheader to the Phils as Pedro of all people goes 130 pitches over 8 scoreless innings.

That guy can pitch, even if he doesn't have the stuff he can place the ball and fool batters. The surprising thing is on Sunday he actually did have stuff and threw harder than he has in a very long time.

I know. Wasn't he amazing? His stats in that game vs the Mets were just nasty.

Come playoff time, there's a good chance he'll be the third starter behind Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee. Who would've thunk it.

He didn't have that ability last yr though which was the big issue. People acted like his velocity was terrible last yr too, and it wasn't..he was throwing low 90s in a lot of starts last yr which is significantly better than he was doing when he came back in 2007, and his later starts in 2006, but he was getting knocked around all over the place.
