    All Star Postgame Discussion Thread

I've got a few thoughts on the game.

-Ironic moment of the year: In the bottom of the 5th Inning Paul Lo Duca grounds sharply to Alex Rodriguez who bobbles the ball, recovers, and throws low in the dirt to David Ortiz at first, who makes the scoop and saves Alex Rodriguez an error.

-Brad Penny would make a nasty closer.

-If the pitcher who starts the ASG never goes more than 2 innings, how about starting a closer just for the novelty's sake. He only would throw 1 inning anyway.

-My Dad is a Red Sox fan and the moment Michael Young's ball landed in right-center he says to me, "my favorite day of the year is the day I can root for Mariano Rivera."

-With Scott Rolen, Andruw Jones, and Nomar Garciaparra on the bench, Phil Garner lets Freddy Sanchez bat against Mariano in the 9th. Sorry Phil, you're no Ozzie.

Why not even put them in for defense in the top of the inning?

You could argue all sorts of clutch hitters, but nobody is better with 2 strikes or 2 outs and RISP than Mike Young.

Up until the 9th, the dullest AllStar game in recent memory. And if I see that " Good to go " commercial one more time, I'm gonna shoot my tv.

Ugh, I can't stand FOX. Does anyone else find it ironic that they play up the "this one counts, it's important" theme, and then during the game, play up their interviews so much that they don't mention what actually happened in the game except as an afterthought. "Oh, and while you were listening to Kevin Kennedy interview Brad Penny, some David Wright kid homered, nothing too important though."

And, I noticed something I called "the curse of the FOX booth." Whenever Buck and McCarver would overly praise someone, something bad would happen to them.

    Examples:
Buck and McCarver talk about how Big Papi is awesome and could launch Penny's fastball, he strikes out. They talk about how hard Penny is throwing, Gurrero homers off of him. They rightfully praise Mauer, he Ks, etc.

I want to kill Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. That "shooting stars" thing was just plain stupid, and the Taco Bell "hit the targets" thing was too.

And did you notice how lax both managers were. Garner said he was leaving all managerial signs to his players, and Guillen said he had barely any signs. Meanwhile, here they are saying they're gonna manage like World Series Game 7.

More rants as I think of them.
Now that we've clinched, there's only one thing I can say: let's not ................ this up.

If the outcome of the all-star game is going to decide the home field advantage of the Worls Series, should the leagues switch off every year in terms of hosting the ASG?

Next year the game is in San Fran, which would lead to two straight years of playing NL rules.

This is not to say that this hasn't happened in the past, I just think it shouldn't continue to happen if "it counts".

Did you notice how many times FOX missed the play on the field because they were interviewing someone? The camera wasn't even on the field, and there's balls hit in play. It's hideous.

Because FOX's coverage is so bad, I was playing XBox most of the night and casually had my eye on the other TV. It's not like I missed all that much anyway, considering that the good stuff happened in the 9th inning. Trust me, a good game of EA Sports NCAA Football '06 beats baseball on FOX almost any day.

Re: All Star Postgame Discussion Thread

They gave the wrong answer to the triva question.

The question was which AS game had the most first time All Stars.

I forget what the answer was but I would think that the AS game in 1933 has the most first time All-stars. Since that was the first AS game all the players who played were first time All Stars.

Regarding Fox's coverage, they missed a few first pitches to lead off an inning so they can play their commerials. I guess someone has to pay for the new deal they signed.

I agree that is was a very boring game up until 2 outs in the 9th inning.

People can claim that they love the NL with the pitcher hitting and a good pitching duel is better than a slugfest but IMO a slugfest is much more entertaining to watch.

Fox needs better commercials. That, the "good to go", the Chevy stuff "What's yer favorite brand, America?", it just all pissed me off. And how about Jeannie Zelasko. Grrr, she is so annoying. What was with interviewing David Wright's dad to get dirt on him (she actually said it this way). I guess she stalks him or something. David Wright has a stalker!

FOX is the absolute worst. I forget which player it was who was wired, but they were so excited to replay his comments and I couldn't even understand what he said. It wasn't as important as the game. I'd rather listen to Kruk than McCarver and if it wasn't for his father, I doubt Joe Buck would have a job on a major network.

My favorite moment was seeing Mo and Tejada react to Ortiz's backhand grab on A-Rod's short hop throw. FOX got that one, for a change.

I think Bronson Arroyo was wired. Without his dad, Joe Buck woud be working at Taco Bell, in my mind, without a question. Good to go, anyone? I actually didn't mind not understanding what Arroyo was saying, because that's what Tim McCarver sounds like to me everytime he opens his mouth.

The man annoys the hell out of me. He has a continual smirk on his face and a scarcastic attitude, while trying to portray the oh so humble son of a great announcer. Kind of like Eddie Haskell in " Leave it to Beaver ". His partner should retire, he's ( as the English say ) " past it ".

One thing I gotta say about this game..... seeing the players as into it as they were made me happy. The idea that the game decides home field may not be the best one, I've always favored the better season record deciding that. But the game has become something a little more serious then before. And I like that. The ASG is fun but it was always tainted with players being apethetic.

Score one for Selig. I gotta give him credit.

Is there another human being making more money because of his father's talent and success? Joe Buck rots as an announcer! However, his father was extremely entertaining....

The thing that bothers me the most about the shotty coverage, is that the game is supposed to "count", right? Why does FOX seem to be fooling around with all the junk going on during the game.

It's all bullsh*t... Cut the crap with "it counts" sh*t already, Pud! If it's a serious game, play it like it's serious, and for crissake, cover it like it's important.

OK, fair to call me biased but shouldn't Paul Konerko have won the MVP? He was the only AL star to have a multi-hit game and without his clutch 2 out hit in the 9th, it's game over for the AL.

And he had more hits than the Yankees and Red Sox combined !

I'm gonna disagree with this.... How about a 2-1 game, using the DH? Now that is exciting!

I gotta say, I rooted for Ortiz to hit a homer every time he got up last night...!!!! Subliminally, I was hoping he would exhaust his homers and not hit anymore against the Yankees. And I was the biggest Michael Young fan on the planet in the 9th. Mostly because I knew if he came through, I would get to see my favorite player in the bottom of the inning.

It's amazing how our perceptions are skewed by what it says on the players' uniforms. During the WBC, I was actually rooting for Chipper Jones! (I only felt a little dirty after I realized it)

Dude I was rooting for Pedro Martinez when the Mets went into Boston. pedro f*cking Martinez. I got mad at Lastings Milledge for dropping a ball.

These are things I would normally point and laugh at.

    These things happen.

Yeah... I hear that.... It's f*cken weird... But during the regular season, I think I am rooting more for Boston to lose than the Mets to win in that situation.

    All Star Game Unplugged...

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slu...yhoo&type=lgns

PITTSBURGH – Come on. Like Fox was really going to show the good stuff when it placed microphones on players during the All-Star game.
Much as we'd love to write about the game, it can be summarized in two sentences. The American League won 3-2. The National League stinks.
And until the ninth inning, when Michael Young tripled in two runs with two outs and two strikes, the only intrigue streamed through the mics. Fox, inventors of the plate cam, the base cam and, coming this October, the toilet cam – "We'll be there for every flush!" – for some reason deemed the unfettered commentary unworthy of broadcast.
Such censoring seems both unfair and unbalanced, so, in the interest of the public, of course, it is only right to disclose the true transcript, obtained after Tuesday's game by Yahoo! Sports.

It is for neither the weak nor timid.
    First inning
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jason Bay, the hometown favorite, runs out to right field to a standing ovation. Under his breath, he whispers.
Bay: No. Oh, no. This isn't happening. PNC Park isn't supposed to be full. We usually get booed. And they're ... cheering? Please. Don't do this. I don't know what this sounds like. My ears. They're bleeding. Stop! I can't take it!
Meanwhile, the NL starter, Brad Penny, is throwing smoke. His fastball sits at 97. He struck out New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter on a high 98-mph fastball two pitches after buzzing him with one at 99. When Jeter returns to the dugout, he sees his teammate, Alex Rodriguez, whose fondness for malaprops is exacerbated by the excitement around the All-Star game.
    Jeter: Man, he's nasty.
Rodriguez: No. It's not Penny's stuff. It's Jerry Crawford's strike zone. It's as big as the Miami Ocean.
Jeter: Alex, the Miami Ocean doesn't exist.
    Rodriguez: Oh.

I never watch commercials. During the commercial breaks, I always mute the sound/change the channel/walk around the house, whatever. Can somebody explain to me what this "Good to go" commercial is all about?

It's this huge series of commercials centered around a Taco Bell product called the "Crunchwrap Supreme" which is like a taco only closed on all sides and less messy, making it modern, advanced, and portable, apparently. Thus, "good to go" is like the product slogan. Everyone in the commercials say it with a really annoying hand/arm wave.
Now that we've clinched, there's only one thing I can say: let's not ................ this up.
