    Use of pitchers

I have always been a supporter of Torre but I wonder why Meyers warms up at least twice a night and doesn't get used. If we are concerned about overuse of the bull pen, isn't excessive warmups without game use a problem. We only warm up Rivera when we will use him, but the other pitchers always seem to be throwing in the bullpen. Could this be why Procter and Farnsworth have had some issues?

Warming up Myers is often necessary, thus is the life of a Loogy. You need Myers ready for certain situations that may arise. Often they don't arise. I'm sure Mike is used to it.

I have a big problem with Torre's use of the bullpen (although I think he has been better this year), but I didn't have a problem with warming up Myers yesterday.

I'm sure he warms up to come in if a situation in which he is needed arises. If not, then he still gets some action in his arm. I don't think it's good for a pitcher to not pitch for too long. Gets them out of their rhythm.

When he pitches, its only to a batter a time, he almost can't be overused. They probably have him throw extra to keep him sharp.

Yeah, overuse is never going to be Myers' problem.

    Re: Use of pitchers

Myers had pitched 16 innings so far, so he's on pace for 30-32 for the season.

He averages around 40 IP per season.

factor in his age and I think he's been used properly so far.

On another note, Proctor has more IP than Chacon...

A combination of Chacon's inability to get past 5 and stay healthy and Proctor's overuse, but still thought that was interesting.

    Re: Use of pitchers

I don't like how Torre uses the bullpen, but I have no problem with him getting Myers up as often as he sees fit. Myers never pitches a lot of innings and isn't an important piece of the bullpen anyway.

That's just it, Meyers is part of the pen that can get an out or two and is often not used when warmed up. i can see how game situations change....but still

    Re: Use of pitchers

Its hard because Myers shouldn't be left in to face a righty, even if there is a lefty on deck, its just not worth it given how righties destroy him. So for Myers to come in you have to pull the pitcher who is in, put in Myers, and put in a new pitcher a batter or two later. There haven't been many times this year where I've thought Joe had a chance to bring him in and he didn't.

Wow...a thread to complain about Torre's bullpen management, I'm flabbergasted.

    Re: Use of pitchers

I think it's a good idea to keep Myers loose since he hasn't pitched that many innings this year anyway. Now if it was Proctor you were talking about, I'd be agreeing with you.
Rocky Colavito was a colorful ballplayer that I would love to see in the Hall of Fame. He had a rifle of an arm and hit 374 lifetime home runs, none of them with a corked bat, either. He finished his career as a member of the New York Yankees and retired the same year as Mickey Mantle.

OK, if I were in charge of titling this thread I would have called it "Warming up pitchers without using them: Is it harmful?" or something of the sort ...

    Re: Use of pitchers

No complaints of late (not that I've ever really complained about Joe), managing the bullpen gets a lot easier when your starters are giving you innings.

    Re: Use of pitchers

I have no problem with him warming up Myers, but he has gotten up Proctor when he shouldn't have at times, and it does take a toll.

Yeah...during the series in Minnesota, Proctor pitched 3+ innings in relief of Wright on Saturday and then was warming up TWICE on Sunday. I know a lot of people think he just sucks, but that kind of ridiculousness will kill anybody's arm.
Congratulations Mike Mussina on your 20th win!

I think most think its a combination of overuse and him sucking. I happen to think its more the latter, but Torre certainly had an effect.
