    Disturbing little trend....

Has anyone else noticed that any time the YES crew brings up that a player at bat hasn't hit a home run against the Yankees this year, or hasn't hit a homerun all year in general, or is struggling with their power but WERE big power hitters last season they always seem to hit a home run in that at bat.

It happened with TRAVIS Hafner last night... it's happened with atleast 4 or 5 others. Everytime they say it, I point it out to my brother or father and then BAM... home run..

    FIRE THEM ALL!!

Perhaps we need an "Official YES Broadcast Team blew the game" thread

Oh, I've noticed that. It's called "jinxing."

By the way, this is yet another thread to suffer the curse of the non-descriptive title.

But that's the whole point, if I had a descriptive thread, there would be no need to read my post... gotta keep the audience guessing

    Re: Disturbing little trend....

Happens all the time when someone is bidding for a no-no or a perfect game too.

"Wang has a no-hitter going into the 5th. Here's the 1-1......RIPPED up the middle, ending Wang's bid for a no-hitter at 4 innings."

They always seem to take a no-hitter seriously after 4 innings too. Start getting excited if he's going into the 6th with one.

i wonder how many no-hit innings moose will throw tonight before they talk about it.

Disturbing little trend.... Aaaaah! Jinx. It's common. I wonder if the Dbacks announcers talked about RJ during his perfect game...

Well, if it's that much trouble, you could just hover your mouse over the thread title to see the first few sentences of the thread. Sorry, i cannot go back and change the title, or I would.

this happened earlier this year against the a's.

i forgot the guy's name, some weak-hitting infielder. he took randy deep.

    on edit

antonio perez. he was hitting .056 at the time. he has 1 hr.

    Re: Disturbing little trend....

When you're talking about someone like Hafner its not really a jinx. I'd imagine the only reason they bring it up is because the guys are HR hitters anyways. I'd only start to worry if we go play the cubs and they mention Womack hasnt hit a homer and he does.

Antonio Perez. He wasn't even hitting .100, I remember that game. I was sitting on the couch going "are you f*cking kidding me?"

    Re: Disturbing little trend....

I am a little bit superstitious about certain things when I'm at games, (though when I get right down to it I don't really believe that they work) but I don't believe in jinxes, really, especially the no-hitter stuff. During the David Wells and David Cone perfect games, as well as the Astros joint no-hitter against us, all they talked about from about the 4th inning on was about how they were throwing perfect games and they still did it. I'm pretty sure that it's the same with just about every no-hitter ever where there have been announcers. They talk about the fact that the guy is throwing a no-hitter non-stop. The reason that so many perfect games/no-hitters are "jinxed by announcers" is because it's hard to pitch a perfect game or a no-hitter and a great deal of the time when someone says "he's throwing a no-hitter" in the 4th inning, the guy isn't going to throw a no-hitter. The reason that they "jinxed" Travis Hafner into hitting homers is because Travis Hafner is one of the best hitters in MLB and the Yankees pitching was poor.

I believe that this is one of those situations where we remember the few incidents where it happened, and forget the many times that I'm sure announcers commented on how light hitting a player was and he Ked or grounded out weakly.

i'm hoping this thread was started simply for something to talk about but do any of you actually believe what some game announcer says has an impact on the field?

Of course we do! Also what is said in Game Threads has a GREAT bearing on action on the field!

Don't confuse us with fact, logic or reason! This thread is for superstition!

Speaking of the word "irony" and the YES team, Michael Kay misuses that word on a daily basis.

He doesn't seem to know the difference between "ironically" and "coincidentally".

    Re: Disturbing little trend....

I think the reason stuff like this happens is because announcers (or whatever media) take note of people who are either surprisingly underperforming or overperforming. When that player starts to perform as expected, of course, the commentary looks ironic.

Thus, when people talk about "somebody being in an unusual slump" worth of discussion, it's not a surprise that that person is going to start to break out of it.

This is very similar to the "Sports Ilustrated Cover" curse. Of course, players or teams that are performing unusually well get on the cover. Sure enough, when they come back to earth, everybody blames it on some ridiculous curse.

Yup, I just saw that. "Twenty-three [innings] in a row for Mussina without allowing a hit ... and here's Hollandsworth ... [WHACK!] And that one's driven deep to right field. Going back Bernie Williams ... still back ... on the track ... at the wall ... SEE YA!"

Literally, the first pitch after he came up with that "Twenty-three in a row" thing.
