No wonder baseball executives are wondering if Tom Gordon could be headed back to The Bronx when the Phillies hold their fire sale.

Well not a full fledged rumor but people are talking about it.

George. King. Untrue.
Perhaps so. But it is an intresting idea and King isn't always wrong. And not that farfetched. I wonder if the Phillies would take Farnsworth for him. He is younger and has had success in the NL, he does make more money though. Philly is always looking for starters and maybe they would be intrested in Chacon if they can lock him up.Originally Posted by apolansk

This year Gordon has 21 saves and a 1.91 ERA.

We signed Farnsworth, instead of Gordon. We're not going to trade him for Gordon now. It just doesn't, and will not work that way.No matter how much better it'll make our team. I can't picture it.

Not really a rumor at all. Im sure a lot of Basbeall people are wondering things about players and teams around baseball.
"Jesus Montero is a stud," one evaluator wrote in an e-mail. "One of the best young hitters I've ever seen, period."

I met Flash with my family in disneyland last year and he told me he loves NY and wanted to stay a Yankee. He said he wold like to close but would set up for Mo again.Obviously it didn't turn out that way but I guess he would mind comming back.
why would they take a reliever who is not performing as well for more money? that doesn't make any sense.Originally Posted by NYDCYankee
No way. He just said that baseball executives wonder about it. We didn't give him a 3rd year on the deal for a reason.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.”
I think if the Phillies determine their season is over (bout 6 back for the WC with Myers, Lieber and Wolf returning), Gordon to the Yankees would seem like a easy fit. Would Cashman and Co. want to cough up that cash? I have no clue.
And secondly, having 3 highly paid setup men like Dotel, Farnsworth and Gordon would be a struggle to get work in.

I wouldn't mind Gordon back if it was a one-year rental thing -- but he has a three year deal and isn't young. Same reason I was glad they didn't resign him in the first place.

Gordon will be pissed. He left NY to close games and then be sent back to be a bridge to Mo again.
Anyway, if ever this is "true", anybody knows if Gordon has a no-trade clause?
Let's go for #28! A-Rod for 2010 AL MVP!

Well, Gordon's stats are based on pitching against the NL East.
The same NL East that lost 12 games in a row to Boston.
We didn't re-sign Gordon because 3 years was too much for a pitcher with an injury history who was heading into his 40's. I don't think anything's changed other than desperation.

Pull the trigger get rid of that bum Farnsworthless
We've already got that guy now. We need a guy that can get us there.Originally Posted by FromPagstoRiches

How about we make it there first. Something that won't happen if Farnsworthless continues to implode against the likes of Kansas City and the Braves.Originally Posted by FromPagstoRiches
Why are people saying how bad it would be to have Tommy G back? Have you seen our pen?
I seem to remember Gordo retiring what, 30 some odd straight batters a year or so ago? Farns is lucky if he can retire 2 batters in a row.
If we got Gordon back, it would take some pressure off of Farns, Dotel and Proctor.
All being said though, I don't think it will happen.
So I see the Yankees want to take Gordon back, huh? Lol. That just tells you how much of a disaster Farnsworth has been.
Now, if Philly wouldnt mind paying the Yankees 8.5 million of Gordon's remaining contract, I would be all for the move.
Follow my season long Yankees blog at http://theworldofcarl.blogspot.com/
I'll just wait for the stats guys to let you know the answer to that. You do remember what he did (or didn't do) in the post season, right?Originally Posted by Yankeeah

Youve got Dotel and Jesus Colome both coming up soon to help the pen, and its not like the phillies are going to give him away, they will want players in return.
Oh and lets not forget the money
Thomas Gordon: signed 3-year deal worth 18M thru 2008 season on 12/2/05- + he receives salaries of 4.5M in 2006, 7M in 2007 and 5.5M in 2008- + the deal includes a Team Option for 2009 worth 4.5M or a 1M buyout
Thats about 15.75 remaining on his contract.
Which means he shouldn't cost much prospect-wise. However, isn't he in his 40's already? 3 years at that age is too much.Originally Posted by skoonen

I realize he still has two years left, but I would have to consider bringing him back. The Yanks need to make the postseason first before they worry about what happens in the playoffs.
whether or not gordon was good in the postseason, has everybody forgotten that over the past 2 years gordon was probably the best setup man in baseball in the regular season?
you know what, if we have gordon this year instead of farnsworth, i bet we're in first place right now, or maybe a game back tops.
too much flash bashing in this thread!
I'm sure George King still thinks Juan Pierre will be the Yankees CFer in 2006. I'll wait and see on this rumor.

Bold prediction: Farnsworth will be as good as Gordon in the 2nd half of this season.

let's not take george king's BS and run with it please
It's not even BS. It's just nothing. It's just saying that some executives wonder if we will try to get Gordon... I'm sure some executives do wonder that, but there's not a chance in hell it will happen.Originally Posted by flymick24
Cash is not about to waste prospects on a guy that has 2 more years on his deal after this one when we could have re-signed him but we didn't wnat to give him the 3rd year. Plus, I'm sure Cash has confidence that Dotel will do a good job when he comes back.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.”
I doubt this will happen. FWIW, I was hoping that NYY would sign both BJ Ryan as the primary setup man and Tom Gordon as a 7th inning type because I didn't think Gordon could handle another full season of the primary guy...especially down the stretch.
Lets see what happens with Octavio Dotel. If he can regain form, that shifts Kyle Farnsworth, Scott Proctor and Ron Villone into secondary roles.
Plus, if you are going to take Bobby Abreu AND Tom Gordon, what are we sending back? If Brian Cashman ever did this without giving up Robinson Cano, Chien-Ming Wang, Philip Hughes or Melky Cabrera, I'd be shocked. I guess taking their contracts would go a long way, however. And yes, I added Cabrera to my "untouchable" list. He's shown me a lot for only 21 years old and maybe at the ripe old age of 25 he can take over for Johnny Damon.

Jesus Montero since June 1 (286 at-bats):
.325/.386/.605/.991
July 1 (182 at-bats):
.348/.417/.658/1.075
Even if the Yanks signed Ryan to be the primary setup man, there is not a chance in Hell that Gordon would have re-signed as a 7th inning guy. He wanted to close, it's what he desired. He would never accept that demotion.Originally Posted by TheBamTino24
