Bridgeport CT mayor admits to cocaine use while in office

    http://www.wtnh.com/Global/story.asp?S=5054087

(Bridgeport-WTNH/AP, June 20, 2006 Updated 10:45 AM) _ A tearful Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi admitted abusing cocaine and alcohol over the course of a number of years, but says "I have put this personal struggle behind me."
Fabrizi received a standing ovation when he addressed city workers, family and friends at City Hall. "I am your mayor and I believe you should have heard this first from me," he said.

This is the guy that took over for Joe Ganim who resigned and is now in jail after being found guilty of accepting bribes.

And don't forget about Ernie Newton. The former Bridgeport State Senator recently resigned from office and took a plea deal from the Feds because of a corruption scandal...

Newton, who resigned Monday, acknowledged in court that he accepted a $5,000 bribe in exchange for helping the director of a nonprofit job training agency secure a $100,000 grant.
    ...
Newton also admitted filing false tax returns and diverting $40,000 in campaign contributions for personal use over five years, which is considered mail fraud because the financial reporting forms were mailed.

Prosecutors said Newton used the money as his personal piggy bank, writing checks for services that weren't actually performed and then having those checks signed over to him.

I hear they have made Bridgeport a confusing city so people would stop going there, getting cocaine, and get right back on 95.

I used to live in Bridgeport. Ganim did a lot including bringing in a ballclub (Bluefish! ) but there's been a bunch of shady doings that have gone down for quite a bit. Cocaine use though? Pretty nuts to imagine the mayor of your former city snorting rails like he was Tony Montana.

I thought it was a bit more like the blockbuster movie Nothing But Trouble, where they make it that way to trap you in there and consume you in some way or another.

Yeah, they put some Jersey barriers at the end of an exit ramp, made a street a dead end, so now you have to weave around a bit... and I highly doubt it deters the determined though (which consists mostly of high school kids from affluent Fairfield County towns looking for... well, you know what they're looking for)

While they both have their share of crooked politicians (don't forget John Rowland is a Waterbury politician).... Bridgeport doesn't come close to having a pervert like Waterbury's former Mayor Philip Giordano....http://www.armchairsubversive.com/Giordano.htm

I totally agree with that - he is the lowest of all possible scum. I read all those stories on him and it made me sick what he did to those little girls.

Funny story on Rowland. My husband ran for State Senate last year and Rowland actually called and left a message that he'd like to put my husband's sign on his lawn. So he brought it over there and had a chat with him. He was quite funny - told him he would like to help with his campaign and said he was "in between jobs" and laughed (this was afer he was out of jail if I remember correctly or maybe right before he went in). Seemed like a nice guy but obviously caught up in a lot of crap.

    Merry f'ing Christmas

Re: Bridgeport CT mayor admits to cocaine use while in office

I've been following this one, and find in hilarious. This guy won't be mayor for much longer. Sadly, this didn't surprise me one bit. If you're going to find two things in Bridgeport it's drugs and crooked politicians, and it seems that Fabrizi has hit the Bridgeport Jackpot.

Bridgeport NEEDS a mayor willing to pull it up and truly revitalize it, and to put the city in the 21st Century. Two back-to-back mayors that are corrupt, including one on drugs, is the last thing Bridgeport needs. They both did some great things for the city, but sadly their corruption has outweighted those good things.

Good ol' Newton. I remember the accusations came out on a Thursday and he called a press conference saying it was racism and he was targeted because of it. Next Tuesday he was arrested and confessed.

If I were mayor of Bridgeport, I would be doing the same sh*t that he was doing. That city is soooo bloody depressing.

Re: Bridgeport CT mayor admits to cocaine use while in office

You know, they all took plea deals, except for Ganim, and for some strange reason I admire Ganim for that. The rest of them cry innocent until it's time to take the deal (including the boy Governor, John Rowland)... it just reeks of hypocrisy.

And by the way, even though what Fabrizi did was illegal, I highly doubt that he will be charged with anything.

    Speaking of Bridgeport......

Judge Spares Life of Lewis the Cat

By PAT EATON-ROBB, Associated Press Writer

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - A state judge on Tuesday spared the life of Lewis the cat, whose vicious attacks on neighbors landed his owner in court, but the terrorizing tomcat was ordered confined to the house at all times.
"There are no exceptions. None," Judge Patrick Carroll told Lewis' owner, Ruth Cisero.
If Lewis gets out, even accidentally, Cisero could face up to 6 months in prison, and Lewis' fate would be in the hands of animal control officers.
Cisero had faced a charge of reckless endangerment because neighbors complained that the black and white cat's long claws and stealth had allowed it to attack at least a half-dozen people. Some who were bitten and scratched ended up seeking treatment at hospitals.
The judge ordered Cisero to complete two years of probation, after which her record will be expunged.
Cisero had fought to keep Lewis, and rejected a previous probation deal because it was contingent on euthanizing the cat.
"I never thought it would come to this," she said. "It's been an absolute nightmare. It's ruined my life."
The cat's case has drawn national attention, with Lewis appearing in People magazine and on his own page on MySpace.com. A Utah animal sanctuary offered to take the cat, but Eugene Riccio, Cisero's attorney, said Lewis enjoys life in southern New England and wants to stay.

I would agree with the negative assessment of Bridgeport 10 years ago... but with addition of the Ballpark and Arena at Harbor Yard, the downtown has made inroads on a resurgence. Its not as bad as it use to be.

Nice ballpark, but too bad it's only independent ball. Attendance is going down too. I don't think that entire league has long to live. They need an affiliated minor league team.

For those thinking Fabrizi was being honest and doing the honorable thing. The reason he confessed was the FBI had a tape showing him using cocaine.

It's no surprise or shock. I've seen cops mess with the white, and then turn around and boast about everyone they locked up for this and that. You never know about anyone in this world...it's one big hipocrisy. For all the integrity and morals this guy probably boasted about while campaigning, he was sitting there blowing rails on his mayoral blotter.
