Trip Report from SoSH, or how I stopped worrying and learned to love NYYFans.com

i decided to check out SoSH for the first time and started reading yesterday's Game Thread since it was quoted in a front page article here.

well, below are some memorable quotes from that day. (i am cherry picking here, of course). most of these are funny, in how one-sided each team's game threads usually are. what surprised me of course is

i'd like to thank NYYFans.com staff and moderators for doing a great service to this community. i realize that i haven't been the model citizen in some game threads, but boy would i hate to have to read SoSH every day.

"jewkooolis is one of the smartest players I have seen in a long time, guess with an old mans yiddishe body trapped in a 27 year old he has to be
reminds me of boggs like that"

"It amazes me that it never seems to matter who is in the MFY lineup.
    ................ this."

"Even money that A-Rod homers here. I mean, the game is already a blowout."

"Too bad Jeter isn't playing. then we could all make fun of his lack of range. Now we're limited to making fun of Damon's arm."

"I'm sorry, but what kind of pussy steals second up six runs in the second inning?
Oh, right: Alex Rodriguez. I'd pay good money to see him take one in his pussy ass before the end of the night."

"At the risk of sounding like a MFYfan.net, I'd love one in Giambalco's ear hole right now."

"Yeah, that's right Homosada. Riske IS trying to hit you with the bases loaded. ................ing moron."

"Riske gets payback for the shot Trot took yesterday." (Red Sox were not playing Yankees then.)

"Anyone else think Cano pimps like a 10x all star? Well he IS the next Rod Carew isn't he? He's just getting a head start."

"Kay just made me throw up in my mouth talking about the RS having a plan to get CCrisp and provide a solid offer to JD. Jeesh, this guy is a worse homer/whinner than the Scooter ever was. Talking about it like it was "disrespecting" judas."

not sure why, but everyone seems to be calling Mussina a 'bigot' as well.

damon was right. red sox fans are not there to cheer a uniform, but to boo whoever is the opposing player. everyone should love him in Boston for the rest of his life. instead he is Judas and a scapegoat, wrapped into one. welcome to the yankees, JD.

Everytime I go there or Red Sox Nation, I sorta kinda start to understand why some Sox fans would rather hang out w/ us.

I'm actually a member, but haven't posted there in a very long time. A few years back it was a fabulous site- relatively small, everyone talking baseball in an intelligent manner. They hated the Yanks, of course, but there was a reasoned approach to arguments and discussion.

Now? It's as bad as any site out there- foul-mouthed trash talking and drivel just like all the sites. They constantly pound on NYYfans, however this site is superior in most facets.

The private areas of SOSH are still ok, but the only time I really go there is when they lose to see the reactions....

The hysterical part is people jumping through all sorts of hoops to become a member of that select club. I think the Groucho MArx principle should apply.

There used to be some interesting discussions, bit I guess theya re all in the members only part now

I'd be shocked if there were another baseball team chat board that had exclusive membership and then a members only part where they did most of thier discussions.

Most of the posts are," hey, look at me, I hate the MFY also."

I'm firmly a believer that closed membership sites don't work over the long haul. Without new blood and fresh opinions, it becomes the same song over and over again, just moving the same chords around.

SOSH suffers from a severe case of internet inbreeding.

Re: Trip Report from SoSH, or how I stopped worrying and learned to love NYYFans.com

A game thread is a terrible way of grasping how good a message board is. There is still some very good discussion on the main public board, and some very good statistical analysis from members who have had a great deal of their work published.

That said, sosh is nowhere near as good as it was several years ago - at least as a public forum. It appears that there is a great deal of discussion that is available only to members.

It also seems like every new member there has a "supporter" or "lifetime" tag under their user name, which means they made a "donation" to the site when they joined - maybe someone who is a member can clarify if this is required when joining now, or if it's strictly optional.

That's true. I've browsed through some stuff over there and there are many very intelligent baseball guys. Of course, the fact that they're Sox fans makes me question how smart they really are.

As for the donation, my buddy is a member and he told me it's totally optional. They switched to a new service about a year ago and people can choose to chip in to help with the costs. You can join without paying though.

Hi Gold, intelligent baseball talk is still the standard at sosh, the other stuff is kept in the private areas and the game threads. I am sure you could get similar comments from any game threads on any boards. I think it's the nature of that kind of thread, lots of sarcasm and tough talk.
Maybe it has changed since you were there, but this is how the board is set up as of today. I hate to see people say they dont read the baseball talk over there and would recommend that if you have not checked it out in a while, to do so.

I follow the yanks and hope to get off the mlb boards for good and get my yankee talk fix over here, so I look forward to talking with some of you in the future.

Im am not trying to stir the pot here, but just pointing out an opposing fans view:

Some of the quotes you posted (not all, just some) you could switch Arod, for Ortiz and they would be almost identical to quotes I have read in Game threads here......

Point being, it is funny to read how opposing fans discuss and view your team........especially when it is these two teams, that is one of the main reasons I love reading this site.

    Preach.

SoSH fell victim to their own hype. Some of the people there actually think posting on SoSH is something to brag about. It's as if they really think that their internet message board status makes them cool in real life. I don't know, I can't articulate it the way I want, but I think you all understand what I'm saying.

I've been posting on SoSH since December, 2005 and NYYFans since February of 2005.

I think the biggest problem that people have in comparing the two sites is that the more familiar that you are with one, the more fault that you'll find with the other. It largely stems from the fact that both sites are the de facto internet gold standard for their respective teams so the expectation is the "rules of engagement" would be the same as well.

Gammons wrote a gutless article about 6 years ago in which, using New York Post-style "no names please, but here's enough innuendo that you can't miss who we're talking about," he basically accused Mussina of being Archie Bunker with a baseball glove. This was when the whole John Rocker sh*tstorm was going down and Gammons was trying to defend Rocker.

You seriously aren't measuring Sosh based on the game thread? Should we do that here?

  31. #31

Re: Trip Report from SoSH, or how I stopped worrying and learned to love NYYFans.com

A game thread is a very poor way to determine the overall quality of the posting or the membership on any site. People say things in the heat of the moment when things are emotional that they might not say otherwise.

That said, I used to read SoSH every single day and was a member. Every site has garbage but it seemed like there was always an interesting perspective, not even necessarily about the Red Sox or the Yankees but about other teams or baseball in general. Maybe all the good conversation has shifted to the private forums that I can no longer access, but I rarely go to SoSH anymore because it seems like its a lot harder to find the interesting discussions than it used to be.

Re: Trip Report from SoSH, or how I stopped worrying and learned to love NYYFans.com

I'll add to the chorus of 'SoSH' ain't what it used to be. Part of that is that I used to read purely for the schadenfreude. I'm still pissed that they locked away the "Bring ARod to Boston" thread. But I'm a minor stat head and I have to say I've learned alot from some of the discussions I read there, even if the smugness is off the charts.

But lately I've been going there less and finding less interesting stuff to read. I completely agree that gamethreads are not representitive of anything, but I've also noticed that there are fewer people posting in their gamethreads lately. They've been having server problems too, and it seems that some of the chat rooms are not as populated as they once were (from an admin post, I'm not a member).

I don't post in our gamethreads as much as I used to either. When you're winning its fun, but when you're losing the game, the negativity comes out and often posters just start going after each other (check out Phil Nevins 23 over in the SoSH game threads for a particularly vile example of this).

The one thing that always bugged the hell out of me about SoSH is G38 and JWH posting there. A fan site should be for the fans. How the hell are you supposed to vent about your favorite team when some of them are reading and responding to your posts? I admired SoSH for it's anti-'fanboy' stance to player evaluation, but then you get people lining up to service Curt. Just plain wrong IMO.

There's no place I've found where Yanks and Red Sox fans can discuss baseball they way they can here in "The RS Thread" and throughout the board. Priceless.

I'm guessing that a big part of this lies in the fact that lurkers used to be able to use the chat feature, and now they can't. Lurkers also used to be able to use the PM function to email members with posts that could add to the discussion, and now, as far as I can tell, they can't. In fact, it's pretty much impossible to access anybody there if you aren't a member. There was one point this Spring where they opened up the Geekage forums to lurkers, so that prospective members could put forth their best efforts, and when I tried to post, it denied me access, even though I was a registered lurker. (which cracks me up when I think about it.) At any rate, I tried to email the mod of that forum about it, and even that didn't work! The email bounced back, so I gave up. Strikes me as taking insularity to an extreme. I've been looking for a good Red Sox forum for a while, and keep coming back here. (I know, it's just your tough luck, isn't it?) I still do read SoSh every day b/c there are many very, very smart posters there, but the Holier than Thou attitude also irritates me.

Re: Trip Report from SoSH, or how I stopped worrying and learned to love NYYFans.com

I won't judge the quality of posters on SOSH based on the game thread because I don't think that's fair, but from what I'm reading it appears that they can get away with more stuff on their forum which IMO is not a good thing. I know that if some of that stuff was said in the GT over here that Social would be all over them and there would likely be a suspension at some point. I love the moderators on this site.

As opposed to New York, where the fans are always on an even keel?

Anyone who goes to our own GT will tell you that it's not the best representation of our fans either. The reason isn't that the fans are fair weather or bad, but since the game is in progress emotions are raw and sometimes clarity is lost.

That's why I said I wouldn't judge SOSH based on the GT. I was more praising our mods than I was bashing SOSH members.

Yes, there are some pretty dumb comments in SoSH gamethreads. There are here too. I actually think that overall, the SoSH gamethreads that I've read seem slightly more moderate and reasonable than the ones here, but that might just be an incorrect first impression (I haven't read many game threads on either site.) Both have a lot of great people, a few terrible, rude and obnoxious posters, and some people in the middle who just lose their tempers in the heat of the moment. I think if you go to either site looking to find reasons to hate it, your job won't be too hard.

Here’s what Gammons wrote: "What Rocker said was unforgivable. But the fact is, every team has heard similar diatribes those from small towns across America have about New York City. One of the game’s best pitchers, a sophisticated, intellectual graduate of one of the world’s finest universities, has splattered teammates with similar comments and boasts that he will never play without a no-trade clause to the two New York teams."

Even a casual baseball fan, after consulting his handy pocket Gammons-to-English dictionary, could quickly deduce the probable name of the alleged comment-splatterer. There is a process of elimination I could run through, just to prove the point, but I’ll save the word-count. Mike Mussina graduated from Stanford. If he is not the "sophisticated, intellectual graduate" Gammons has in mind, it sure looks like he is.

After about 5 minutes of searching, I couldn't find the actual article though. I'd assume ESPN removed it from it's records.

I don't buy it. If Moose said he would never play without a NTC to the NY teams, why would he sign with the Yankees the very next season. Something is missing here or I am misinterpreting.

Yes, Gammons was almost certainly wrong as well.

Look, there's more than a few fans that i wouldn't want quoted as representing NYYFans in general
