For a guy who got hit hard his last outing, that's a deadly outfield defense to have with Small on the mound.

Especially with the huge outfield in Detroit. That's 3 doubles the Yankees are handing the Tigers.

Having Long play over Bubba...does this spell the end of Crosby's time as a Yankee?

I don't like Bernie in CF in this spacious stadium... That could really hurt us.

In a spacious OF like Detroit, it must be bothering him enough to not play the field. And against the best pitching team in baseball right now, it also must be bothering him enough to not play at all.

I'm going to go out on a limb, and say that Terrance Long is a worse defender than Bernie. Long is faster than Bernie, but makes plenty more mental mistakes and gets poorer reads

Long is probably one of the worst defenders in baseball and has no place on this team. At least Joe is recognizing this. Now Cashman needs to recognize Thompson's value.

i'd almost rather see Bubba back because for some reason Joe thinks T can't play CF.. and he'd put Bubba in CF and Bernie DHing

I don't think Long can play CF. Both he and Bernie are awful out there. Maybe Long's speed would be more of an asset in this stadium. The real problem here is that we don't have a reserve outfielder who is good enough to play an, at worst, adequate CF when Damon gets the day off.

I like seeing Melky in the leadoff spot when Damon can't play, hopefully he won't have to fill in many more times this year.

    Long DHing again?
There was a blurb in the Post mentioning Torre's confidence in Long. Apparently since the guy has playoff experience, he's going to send him out there. Yipee...

Yeah, you very well could be right. And with Damon hurting and not able to play CF everyday, we need a good defensive CFer on this team. Thompson fits that bill.

I agree, but since that doesn't appear to be happening, we have no one on the roster right now who can do the job.

    Re: todays lineup (5/30)

Why do us fans know that KT is the better option as the 4th outfielder, but the so called experts like Cashman, Torre, and other Yankee management can't see that.

Thing is, Cashman sees Thompson's value as a prospect, and wants him to play every day.

I'd love for a lineup like this:
    SS Jeter
    LF Cabrera
    DH/RF Sheffield
    1B Giambi
    3B Rodriguez
    CF/DH Damon*
    C Posada
    2B Cano
    RF/CF Thompson

*Not getting on enough to warrant leadoff or two-spot at the moment.

    Re: todays lineup (5/30)

Isn't CF Melky's natural position? If Damon's foot becomes a lingering issue, wouldn't it make sense to give Melky some starts in CF? That way if Damon needs to DH more often Melky can just slide into CF. And ideally Kevin Thompson would be called up to play LF. If nothing else it keeps Bernie out of the outfield.

Other than the fact that he had a hamstring injury when we would have called him up last time, I'm not sure why Crosby continues to get opportunities over him.

Yeah, he's been playing CF in the minors but he projects as a corner outfielder and he's going to play here everyday in LF, so you might as well keep him there. I think if Damon's foot continues to be an issue you have to let KT play CF. (Or Bubba, knowing this organization).

    Re: todays lineup (5/30)

If damon can't play CF, then I'm not sure who I would like playing CF..I wouldn't play T-Long there or Bernie...and Melky needs to stay in one spot and develop some rhythm, so him being in CF is out of the question. So really I'd say today is the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation in CF.

According to MLB.com (Gameday) and ESPN, the lineup is as follows:

    LF Cabrera
    SS Jeter
    DH Giambi
    3B Rodriguez
    C Posada
    2B Cano
    CF Williams
    RF Long
    1B Phillips

According to ESPN Radio, Sheffield is out due to his wrist.

Isnt DH supposed to be the team's one of the best hitters .

Why not put Sheff at DH and let Long play the field ?

I dunno, from what scouting reports have said, he's got the tools to play CF but he's just really inconsistent. This wasnt helped by what I saw in spring training. He made some great plays but looked a little scary out there
