Angry 5/24/06 - Yankees @ Red Sox (Johnson vs. Clement)

rubber game of the series. while noone is particularly pleased with RJ's performance of late, as well as the current state of the bullpen, this is as close to a must-win as a May game is going to get. Make it or break it time.

good news : we have Giambi and Sheffield back. there's a pretty good chance to see some fireworks against ramirez as well.

    Pitching matchup
NYY: LHP Randy Johnson (5-4, 5.62 ERA)
The most astounding indication of Johnson's current struggle is that the 6-foot-10 left-hander, poison to same-side hitters when he is in a groove, is being hit at a higher rate by lefty hitters (.286) than right-handed batters (.271). Along with his good stuff, he would also like to regain his intimidation factor.

Johnson tries yet again to straighten himself out, having struggled in each of his past five starts and six of his last seven. Johnson was hit hard by the Red Sox on May 9, giving up seven runs in 3 2/3 innings, though only two of the runs were earned. The Big Unit has walked 15 batters in his last five starts, striking out 18.

BOS: RHP Matt Clement (3-3, 5.58 ERA)
Clement's only prior start against the Yankees in Fenway Park was an eyesore, as he allowed six runs in less than three innings of a 7-4 loss last July 16. He beat the Phillies in an Interleague game on Friday -- but he has not won consecutive starts since Aug. 29-Sept. 3 of last season.

Clement has been the model of inconsistency, alternating wins and losses for his last five starts. The common theme in his good starts has been late struggles. Twice he has thrown six scoreless innings, but he has ended up allowing a total of seven runs in those two games. In his last start, he held the Phillies to one run on three hits through six, but the right-hander gave up two more runs before departing in the seventh. Clement has not faced the Yankees this season and is 1-1 with a 5.54 ERA in three lifetime starts against New York.

    Player to watch

Jason Giambi was benched Tuesday night on the tail end of a 6-for-40 spin that had lowered his average to .254. While not flat-out categorizing him as "tired," Torre felt it was time to give him a "blow." Giambi got two earlier "blows" this season and returned from those off days to go 4-for-7 with a pair of homers and four RBIs. Add the fact he hits Matt Clement well (four hits plus four walks in 13 plate appearances, with a homer and five RBIs) and keep an eye on him.

Ramirez has seven RBIs in the first two games of the series, including another four in Tuesday's loss. He is 5-for-8 with two homers in his last two games after a 4-for-27 skid in his previous eight games. Ramirez is still batting .339 with nine homers and 24 RBIs in his last 33 games to raise his batting average 99 points to .304.

Re: 5/24/06 - Yankees @ Red Sox (Johnson vs. Clement)

wow, take a look at this lineup :

    Cabrera
    Jeter
    Sheffield (DH)
    Giambi
    Rodriguez
    Cano
    Williams
    Long (CF) ???
    Stinnett

    vs.

    Youkilis
    Loretta
    Ortiz
    Ramirez
    Varitek
    Lowell
    Pena
    Mohr
    Gonzalez

i don't mind giving Damon a day off in the field or batting Melky leadoff, but wouldn't you put Sheffield in RF and have Damon DH? or at the very least to avoid having both Williams and Long take the field?

this is an important game, why mess up the lineup so much? especially since a relatively easier series vs. KC is coming up?

I guess it's good to have Damon and Posada PH for Long and Stinnett at some point, but geeez

Our 2-6 hitters better have good games.

Has Melky ever been a lead off hitter in his career? I dont think he was in the minors, I hope he played little league then and lead off there.

I heard Bernie's in center, not Long.

terp, are you not happy to have a ballgame to watch?

I'm not a big fan of the sad faces in the title of the thread. Let's be positive until we have reason to be unhappy.

EDIT: n/m, Long's in center, that's very interesting...

With a broken hamate, how much is Sheff capable of playing the field (I really have no idea)?

    Anyway, Hi everyone.

Is Damon OK or is this just a day off?

Posada better not be out for a long time. Catcher is the one spot where we can't afford an injury at.

And I don't understand how Melky leads off and not Jeter.

    Good evening my people.

Good to be back after missing most of the GT last night due to work. I was trying to get rid of people so fast so I can watch the game and even that didnt work.

That isnt the case tonight. My caps are set up and ready to go if needed. Wish I could have provided caps of that pose from Manny last night.

BTW, message to Randy. Get the first 2 men out and make Ortiz move. Then, after that, buzz Manny. Then, pitch a good ballgame and lets get 2 of 3 here.

    Go Yankees!!

Howdy, I love the caps as you know, but I saw plenty of Manny on my TV last night.

Hmm, unfortunely this year there will be no longshots as Brazil wont lose this title.
But teams that can go far are Sweden, US, Holland, Germany, France and the Ivory Coast.

I assume that you're kidding about IC, and are you aware that the US lost a warmup last night?

My reason for picking the Ivory Coast is that there is usually always one surprise team from Africa in every world cup and the IC are the strongest nation from Africa thats why I think they can do some damage and the U.S will be fine. They deserved to make the semi-finals last world cup and they have only gotten better since.

I want a larger sample size. I saw the guy's swing on Monday, I think it was, and he has a really nice swing. I know that doesn't always turn over to good hits, but I wanna give him a chance.

Defensive change for the Yanks, according to Gameday, Bernie is in CF, Long is in LF.

They had that switched 45 mins ago.

Melky is playing great right now. I love his approach at the plate. We put him in the leadoff spot and now he's worked the at bat to 3-2. This kid is gonna be good.
