Thread: What's wrong with Dontrelle?

    What's wrong with Dontrelle?

Yesterday at home against the Braves, Willis gave up 7 ER's, on 10 hits, walking 2, K'ing 0, and only going 2 2/3 innings. This put his record at 1-4 for the season, with a 6.22 ERA. Anyone who watched the WBC remember his struggles there as well.

So, what's wrong with the D-Train?

Part of it is probably mental, he's not very happy to be with the Marlins.

He's not helping his trade value, but he is giving the Marlins a reason to think about trading him. Which is bad for the Marlins and good for the team who ends up picking him up.

Dontrelle has hit bad streaks every year. Last July, he posted a 7.14 ERA. 2005 was the only year he was really consistent apart from that one month. In 2004, he got off to a hot April (2.73 ERA) and then went downhill (5.10, 4.63 in May and June, 4.31 August, 4.28 in September). In July, his ERA was 2.78. It's ups-and-downs with Dontrelle. I think he'll be alright once he gets out of his rough patch.

We should try to trade for him now.

Exactly why I didnt want to trade Hughes for him. I thought D-Train coming into this season was very overrated. His numbers wont stay that bad but in the Al East he would be a 4.00 era pitcher imo.

He doesn't have the same D behind him either. Last night there were two balls ruled hits that could have been errors. Lowell, Gonzalez, Pierre, Castillo, Lee the year before that--the Marlins D has really declined.

That great defense could make a few starters appear better than they really were.

The Marlins defense is inexperienced thus resulting in many more hits given up, plus maybe he just doesn't play with the same energy he had when he thought he could win any game he started. Now he knows he has to be almost lights out to get a win.

Maybe he is waiting for that trade to a contender. Do you hear George calling Joe Girardi for a favor to the Yanks?

    Re: What's wrong with Dontrelle?

Watching Baseball Tonight last night, they really nailed it on Willis. All he's doing is trying to paint the outside corner, low and away to righties. He's hitting the spot, but everyone is just going with the pitch and knocking it into right field.

He's only given up one home run in eight starts, but righties are hitting .316 off of him this year as opposed to .247 last season.

I agree with Snatch in that he's just not that good. Not as bad as he's pitching now, but not as good as he was last season either.

    Re: What's wrong with Dontrelle?

Dontrelle Willis is really good. Going into this year he had 6.83 K/9, 2.64 BB/9, and and 0.67 HR/9. Those are spectacular peripherals: 2.65 BB/9, and less than .70 HR/9 for someone coming off his age 23 season.

His mechanics are AWFUL right now. He looked bad at the WBC and I'm not surprised to see him doing so terrible.

That would be a good way to take a shot at the WBC if only Dontrelle had pitched well in the WBC.

I was so disgusted with him last night for completely negating the outing I got from Peavy that I traded him straight up for Francisco Liriano. It is a keeper league so it's not the worst trade I ever made. Hell, even this year Liriano might finish with better numbers. I see Dontrelle having a year like 2004 or worse. The WBC should have tipped me off before I even drafted him.

Aside from fantasy now...I don't see it getting much better. As someone said he's not as bad as he looks right now but totally not as good as last year. Also that team is going nowhere. He's not going to quit but you really have to dig down deep on a losing team to bring your A game each time. It's going to be harder for him to bounce back. Barring a trade I think we're looking at a 4.00 ERA this year, 12-13 wins if he's lucky.

Not having a real team behind him definately hurts... though yeah it's not really the problem of his pitches.. it's his choice of pitches... he is way too predictable against righty right now... he has the stuff.. but he also need to know how to out smart oppenents and not just trying to beat them with pure stuff...

    Re: What's wrong with Dontrelle?

Last year he had a real catcher (LoDuca), who was known for calling a really good game.

This year, he's doing without both the good catcher and good infield defense, and getting screwed.

Now watch him get traded to the Redsox for cheap becasue of his bad start, and dominate there

Spectacular is a strong word for 6.83 K/9

He's a ground ball specialist (think Pettitte).
He really needs great infield defense.

    Re: What's wrong with Dontrelle?

He is a ground ball pitcher.. but not exactly a specialist. (well he kinda is this year with that over 2 GO/AO .. but in his previous seasons he is usually around 1 to 1.2 in GO/AO average.. that's a groundball pitcher.. not a specialist.)

A specialist is a guy like Wang with almost 2.8 GO/AO .. or even more extreme cases would be guys like Roy Halladay or Brandon Webb.

I have to agree though that it's probably the catcher hurting him more than anything... his hitting the marks.. but just way too predictable with his pitches right now..

Hurts him in the run support department, but he gives up a lot of hits and earns his runs, too.
