IDK about the coin one but the chicken one is pretty simple. He picks two people that he knows are squeamish(usually women) and does the trick in front of them. What he does is tucks the chicken's head underneath its body and has a rubber chicken head which he holds in the other hand almost coverd and moving so you can't tell its rubber. Obviously the people watching get freaked out and step away, and then he "re-attatches" the head and thats it.

I dont care, and I think he is crazy, but I still went because I was on the upper west side today. A ton of people were there, I didn't get in the big line, just stood there for a few minutes and continued my walk.

I'm hearing that the 9 minute escape thing is in jeapordy (spl?). He supposedly hasn't eaten, so his trying to outdo the 8 min, 58 sec record for holding one's breath, especially with 150 lbs of chains after having not eaten, may be too much.

I'd have to step up to that thing by him to see what's going on. I'd have to see it for myself.

The ice cube stunt in times square was a trick, they showed how it was done on another show, it was 50 degrees inside of the cube, and there was a system of mirrors which allowed him to escape through a hatch into a hidden room

..which brings me back to my original question. Is it a stunt or a trick? Is it a legitimate attempt to break a world record, or is it a very elaborate trick, set up to look like a record breaking stunt?

i've read that the Guiness Book people won't be there, so it won't qualify as a world record (they'd have to inspect the water 2 hours in advance or something like that, and when he starts holding his breath, he wouldve been under there for a few days)

This morning the news was reporting how he will have a doctor examine him and he may have to be examined in the water because he is very weak, yada, yada, yada....
IMO, it's all to make everyone think it's even more dangerous than initially expected. I don't think the man is going to endanger his life for the sake of a few Ooohs and Ahhhs. The guy knows what he's doing.

If I happen to remember it's on tonght, I'll watch, but if not, it's not that important to me.

If you search "David Blaine" on Google, you'll come across some websites that explain how most of his tricks are done. For example, the 1-50 guess a number trick really isn't that impressive once you know all the rules. But the bottom line is that it doesn't matter if you know the secrets of his tricks - he is a master illusionist and it is amazing to watch him in action, how he fools so many people so easily. It must take forever to perfect those card tricks.

I still remember watching one of his shows when I was a kid. He started flying around, which was cool enough as it was, but then he flew into a glass tank and they put a lid on it ... and he was still flying around inside. Then they took the top off and he flew out again... and out over the crowd . Keep in mind, this was an outdoor event, and he flew from a covered area(the stage) to the back of the crowd in open air.
