As for Bernie batting ahead of Cano, they're facing a lefty and Bernie's a switch hitter. Also, since Stinnett is batting 9th, you don't want your two worst hitters batting 8-9.
As for Giambi, Torre doesn't know how to switch Giambi and Sheffield in a lineup, even though it's logical.
