The Tigers don't have to contend with a Red Sox team that's playing with passion for their division. We tied for first last year. How many games do you think we can afford to piss away? I'm serious, BTW, I want an answer, because the more games we piss away in April the less room we have to be tired in August.

I get tired of every team being compared to the '98 squad. There will be plenty of talented Yankee teams who will do a lot of winning but I think it will be a long time before we see anything as special as that '98 team. A 1-4 start doesn't mean that this team is doomed but I really don't think they will be winning 114 games either.

[QUOTE]The 2006 team is essentially the same team as last year, which won 95 games, plus Johnny Damon[QUOTE]

I do think the team is the same team talent wise, but it should win more games. If we didn't go though 100 starting pitchers last year our record would have been a lot better. Replace those starts by Kevin Brown, Wayne Franklin, Sean Henn, Darrell May, Tim Redding with starts by a healthy Carl Pavano or even Rasner, DeSalvo, etc., and thats about a five win swing.

We don't have the same pitching we did in 1998.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.

I'm planning on marinating a pair in a teriaki glaze and then grilling it. With a side of mashed taters it should be yummy.

I hope it won't be the Manolos. Or do you think, like an expensive cut of beef, the higher priced shoe is more flavorful?

I love my Manolos too much to eat them. I'll pick a different pair, although the choice will be difficult.

I only wish I didn't have to make it. *glowers at people who keep comparing '06 team to '98 team*

    Cone - 3.55 ERA 1.18 WHIP
    Irabu - 4.06 ERA 1.29 WHIP
    Duque - 3.13 ERA 1.17 WHIP

Just based off 2005 numbers (i have my own predictions but i'll leave those out)

    Johnson - 3.79 ERA 1.13 WHIP
    Mussina - 4.41 ERA 1.37 WHIP
    Wang - 4.02 ERA 1.25 WHIP
    Chacon - 2.85 ERA 1.22 WHIP
    Pavano - 4.77 ERA 1.47 WHIP

Compared to 2005 it clearly is better, but there's certain things I expect to change in the numbers, and I think if you compare the numbers, the 98 bullpen was definitely worse than what we have now

Re: 1998 - Deja Vu All Over Again?

That's odd, because I was just going to post a thread like this.

What this team lacks in SP, is makes up for in O, and probably the 7th and 8th inning guys (esp after the addition of Dotel). Randy is at least as good as Wells; Moose ain't no slouch either.

I continue to have a really good feeling about this team, particularly if Dotel pans out...

If we add another arm (or Pavano can deliver), then wow...

Who cares? As Yankee fans, we need to stop looking back at the dynasty years and start looking forward.

'98 was an extra special year with lots of memories...........but every year is special just being able to watch my Yankees play every day.........

Re: 1998 - Deja Vu All Over Again?

oy.... there aren't many teams in history that can be mentioned in the same breath as the 98 Yanks. Sorry, but you can never compare a team to what that team did until after a season is over. There's no way, even with the most dominant team on paper you can create, to predict they will be that special. You need to click for an entire season. Avoid injury, minimize mistakes and capitalize on those in your favor. Relentless at taking the extra base whether your up 10 runs or down.

There's no way. The division is too tough. All I want is a playoff spot.
