I'm one of the rare people that somewhat likes Barry Bonds. I think what he's done, with steroids or without steroids, is absolutely amazing. a 1400 OPS? That is insane.
He's gotta have some supporters, I am one of them.
I wouldn't say I'm a supporter, and I'm definitely not a Bonds apologist, but I love watching the guy play.
You get what you give in this world. Bonds had such a reputation of being a nasty man it stands to reason that the fans would treat him likewise. I'm not saying it's right, but he had to see this coming.

I know he's mean spirited.. but in all honesty.. has he ever done anything worth being killed for? Because during the show he was saying "Imagine if murder was legal. I would be the first person they would kill".. he's the poster boy for steroids and everybody is taking out there steroid anger when it should be spread around... even to some Yankees.
I agree. This whole sham investigation is being tabbed as the Case Against Bonds, but he's not the only one. I think there should be penalties and justice served for all the guys they find out did steroids and it should be a uniform penalty. The reason Bonds is the focus so much is because A) he's about to break the biggest record in sports and B) he's always been an asshole to everyone, even before anyone mentioned the word juice around him.
Nobody cares if Sheffield got to 400 HR because he shot steroids, but everyone should care if Bonds gets to 756 because of them.
Heckling is fine, fans have done that to other players suspected, including Yankees, but the syringe thing and possible threats is way over the top. Again, I think that the public reaction to Bonds is so much stronger because of his attitude and abilities.

I kind of agree-I know he has a detestable personality, and that adds fuel to the fans' fire, but the only reason fans (and the holier-than-thou media) are making a stink about steroids now is because of 755.

Yeah. he's the perfect target and it's an absolute sham Bud is taking it out on Barry. especially in the year that he might pass Hank Aaron. Grow some balls and go after some other people. Like Sheffield, Giambi, even. As a Yankees fan, it would pain me if they were indicted but to make Barry's life a living hell like this is ridiculous.
i'm sure most average fans don't even care about his personality.. they just want somebody to take their anger out on and it's Barry because of 755.

this investigation is a bigger sham than just taking it out on barry. selig chose a baseball insider - george mitchell is a director of the red sox and sits on the board of espn-owner disney. no way mitchell turns around and focuses the investigation where it should be - on what the commissioner's office knew or should have known and why no action was taken.
If Giambi or Sheffield were in pursuit of the HR record, then you can bet your sweet bippy that people would be all over them and then some for it.
Even though Jason admitted to a grand jury that he did steroids and it was leaked......he still said he did it, he apologized and he's moved on. I've yet to see Barry Bonds show one ounce of contrition for what he's done. That my main beef. Everyone and their dead dog knows Barry Bonds juiced/juices. Why he can't grow some stones and admit that......is beyond me. Be a man Barry, admit you f*cked up.
Then why not have the same amount of venom towards Sheffield? If it's simply because he's on your team, fine, I can accept that. But Sheffield is a pretty malcontent character, not unlike Bonds, and I don't see the hatred spewed at him.

Thats pretty much true. Sheffield seems more honest and up front than Bonds ever was, but he still is pretty damned abrasive, and there is as much reason to believe he took steroids as there is for Bonds. If he had 700 HR he'd be in the same place.
Sheffield is ornery. Bonds is a racist, a cheat, a tax cheat, an adulterer, and he threatened to kill a woman. He's on a whole different plane.

Tell me, what was Giambi apologizing for again? Oh that's right, he's sorry, but he can't tell us what for. Don't kid yourself. Giambi isn't sorry for anything other than the fact that he got caught. There never would have been a press conference to apologize for stuff we can't talk about but are real sorry for, if his testimony never leaked. How he gets a pass is beyond me. Giambi's only regret is admitting to the grand jury that he cheated, then having it get leaked.
More honest and up front? He says Bonds set him up, and he never knew he was using steroids. That's the same defense Bonds made, only he didn't try to use another man as a scapegoat like Sheffield did.
And Bonds being a "racist, a tax cheat, an adulter, and threatening to kill a woman" had what to do with Barry Bonds the baseball player who is accused of using steroids? Unless you know his wife, his mistress, or work for the IRS, none of this concerns you. What he does outside of baseball is not your concern, or even your business. Hate him as a player, but save those other judgements for a higher power. Unless of course you live your life perfectly, have never done any wrong by anyone, and never made mistakes. Then by all means, feel free.

Yeah, and on "Bonds on Bonds" he said he receives plenty of hate mail every day, much of it containing racist slurs. I think this show may humanize him more than any interview he could possibly do or at least have people think twice before judging him.
Way to fail to understand both the gist of my post and that sentence. I was admitting Sheffield is not so different from Bonds overall, and in that phrase I was saying Sheffield doesn't seem to have as much of a fraudulent character as Bonds from the things I have heard they have done (they have both lied about steroids I am sure, I am speaking of everything else). I may not know their life stories, but I dont think that is insanely inaccurate.

We read about horrible people in the news everday. People who rape children, assault homeless people for fun, shoot up courthouses, drive drunk and kill innocent bystanders, etc... we read about them and dismiss them from memory without a care.

I don't particularly like the guy but I find the so called "journalists" who go on national TV and proclaim how much they hate Bonds to be even more dispicable than he is. Remember, many of these self-imporant media dbags are the same folks who will dog ARod (in many ways the anti-Bonds) for being a phony or a goody goody. What's ARod's sin? It was definitely done for that purpose. However, seeing the mail he gets, some people are absolutely disgusting human beings. It actually did make me sympathize with him for a moment, because no matter what he has done, no one deserves that type of treatment. Least of all some athlete who plays a game.
No one was chastising you, it's not that serious. I can't stand Bonds, but I don't like that people (not saying you) try to justify hating him by saying he's worse than so and so, or he is a "tax cheat" and what not. It has nothing to do with anything. Sheff is definitely not as fraudulent. When he has something on his mind he lets everyone know it. I don't know if that's so much better than Bonds' (seemingly) arrogant attitude though.

Gammons, in his latest article, doesn't have much sympathy for Bonds. He talks about what other players have gone through in being taunted as much worse:
"I was there in San Diego. I have been in Fenway and watched adults stand behind kids and scream obscenities at Derek Jeter, of all people. I was in Three Rivers Stadium when they threw batteries at Dave Parker, and on the bus outside Yankee Stadium when fans smashed in the window of the bus while going after Carlton Fisk, three of them dressed in "Fisk Eats Rice" T-shirts."
He then talks about how low key most of the crowd in San Diego actually was. I don't think Bonds is going to get much sympathy.

People can talk all they like about how Bonds gets treated like this because he is such a terrible human being, but in reality it has nothing to do with the person he is. In all honesty, NONE of us know who Bonds is besides the hulking beast presented to us on Sportscenter to some ominous music track behind him. This is a game which is played by one team on both sides, and that is the collective media specifically ESPN. They shred Bonds on a daily basis, cover him as though he was the second coming of christ, and then put on their shocked faces when he gets a syringe thrown at him in a ballpark. Then proceed to make Bonds out to be a sympathetic figure. By tommorow morning he will once again be a pariah.
I am not saying anything one way or the other, certainly not that he is a good guy and certainly not that he is the supervillain he is portrayed as. What I'm saying is that this is the way the media plays the game, and that's why for the most part I just can not take any sports reporting seriously any longer.
