    Recommend a movie thread

Looking for recommendations on bizarre movies that you think are great but not movies that everyone has seen. Not looking for recommendations like "The Godfather" or "Shawshank Redemption". Movies like "Vulgar" and "Suicide Club" would fit this question. Most interested in thriller/horror types. B rated movies are more then welcome. I know we have plenty of people into mindf*cks here, so post away.

I've been researching some and came up with:
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Peeping Tom (from the 60s, there's a newer movie with the same name but it's a different story)

    anyone seen either of these?

    Confidence

Came out in 2003. Sort of a Oceans 11 vibe to it. Great cast (Ed Burns, Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, Rachel Weisz). It's about a con artist and his crew having to make up for screwing a small time mob boss. Good plot, some laughs, and a cool twist ending.

I thought it would be terrible, too. However, I watched it last night and I was pleasantly surprised. It isn't the greatest movie, but with extremely low expectations, you'll be happy.

I wanted to see it based on the trailer. But after hearing reviews from people I knew I just kinda forgot about it. maybe I'll make that my next rental. I was dissapointed when I found out it was supposed to be terrible.

my FAVORITE movie of all time was an indie-flop comedy in like 1998.

Its called "Safe Men" and if it came out now it'd have an "All-Star" cast. It stars Steve Zahn and Sam Rockwell as two failed musicians who are mixed up with a pair of professional safe-crackers. Paul Giamatti plays a Jewish mobster named "Veal Chop" and Harvey Firestein plays a fence named "Good Stuff Leo".

I'd guess its NOT for everyone; I think you'll either LOVE it or not get it from the start.

Theater of Blood, starring Vincent Price and Diana Rigg. An actor who only performed Shakespeare exacts his revenge on theater critics... in a Shakespearian manner, of course.

Also, Empire of the Ants, with Robert Lansing and Joan Collins. My favorite bug movie of all time.

    Sneakers.

Robert Redford, Dan Akroyd, Sydney Poitier, River Phoenix, Mary McDonnell, and Ben Kingsley.

I can never see this movie enough times.

And it's going to be 14 years old this year. Hot damn.

Saved! was funny and scary at the same time. I know it was an exaggeration, but there are people out there who think along those lines. Plus it has Mandy Moore.

Recently, Constant Gardener was very good. Brick looks amazing but not out yet. The Ice Harvest sucked. Going back a few years, if you liked Royal Tannenbaums, go rent Bottle Rocket ASAP.

I loved Lock Stock, better than Snatch which was also pretty sweet. Boondock Saints, though I don't know how 'undiscovered' that one is anymore.

One of the funniest scenes of all time is in that movie. It's a flashback to the 70s and Christopher Walken is doing this crazy dance move in this bar for no reason what so ever. Walken rules. It's obviously an ad lib.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was a very good, and very disturbing film. Disturbing, because it was believable.

If you're looking for pure mindf*cks try Eraserhead, or Begotten (if you can find it).
David Cronenberg is always a good source for stuff like that..Rabid, The Brood, Videodrome, Crash, the Fly.
A good classic horror film is Suspiria.
Spike Jonze' Being John Malkovich and Adaptation are not in the horror genre, but they are weird, and funny.
An excellent foreign film is City of Lost Children, filled with some very strange and haunting images.
Also, check out the documentaries Crumb (about the great underground cartoonist and weirdoo R.Crumb) and Hated (about the notorious punk rock legend GG Allin).

Creepy: The Wicker Man... check out the original before the remake (w/ Nic Cage) comes out.

Plus, if you're after good old fashioned Sci Fi/Horror, nothing can beat Alien, imho.

Truly one to see. (I own a copy.)

"American Werewolf in London" is fun to watch.
"After Hours" is one of those movies that is just "bizarre enough", but is also very amusing.

The Butcher Boy and Delicatessan are both good and twisted. If you like dark comedy, and aren't easily offended, try some of Todd Solondz's films, particularly Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness.

For a really, really old horror/thriller, try "The Mask of Fu Manchu" (1932) with Boris Karloff. It's creaky and dated to the extreme but has a pretty good weirdness quotient, and being a "Pre-Code" early talkie, it's more sexually frank than we usually associate with old-timey Hollywood. Myrna Loy is a hoot as Fu's sadomasochistic nymphomaniac daughter.

In a similar vein, "Kongo" (1932) with Walter Huston is so disturbing, you won't believe it was made when it was made.

NOOOO!!!! Why remake that? It was creepy, but nothing too great. Remakes fall under two categories - not needed because the original is too good to top and not needed because the original is just fine. This falls under the 2nd. Nothing can be gained (besides $$ in Hollywood) by them remaking the Wicker Man.

I just rented War of the Worlds. Spielberg's shift of the focus from the standard "scientist trying to save the world" to Tom Cruise as the father just trying to save his family made the film. The horror comes from the perspective and empathy for the main character. Everyone's natural reaction is to go hide in a cellar somewhere.

The movie shows why that won't work.

Not disregarding all the others you wrote. They'be been noted. But this one in particular I had my eye on. I actually bumped it to the top of my list. I'm glad you mentioned it.

Truly one to see. (I own a copy.)
When I read the storyline and saw how many people praised it I figured I'd throw it on my list as well. I love old horror movies. I do appreciate special affects and unnecessary gore, but many horror flicks now just want to push the limits with both forgetting about storyline. There are good ones, but at this point it's hard to touch classics as far as story and actually being freightened. Sometimes the unknown is more freightening then actually seeing someone get hacked up.

I won't spoil it, but it's one of those movies where everyone has a different opinion on what did or did not actually happen.

    Good suggestion.

Some people don't know this and they end up being disappointed.
I think I can deal with it, if the dialogue is good enough.
