Thread: Ticket question regarding wheelchair seats.

    Ticket question regarding wheelchair seats.

Maybe someone here knows the answer to this question --

A friend of mine is looking at purchasing tickets to a game this season. He was going to buy a pair from a season ticket holder who has wheelchair accessable seating. The guy who owns the season tickets is legitimately handicapped, but my friend who is going to buy them and attend the game is not.

Is he going to get in trouble at the stadium, or do the ushers not enforce anything like that?

    Thanks.

Re: Ticket question regarding wheelchair seats.

    From Yankees.com:

^ Special Information: For ticket accounts with seats located in areas designated for wheelchair-bound patrons: (i) the account holder of record's ticket and one (1) companion ticket will be priced in accordance with the Wheelchair Accessible and Companion Seating schedule; and (ii) all additional companion tickets will be priced at the regular price per tickets in accordance with the Regular Season Seating schedule (i.e., full price based upon location within Yankee Stadium). Be advised that New York Yankees reserves the right to take appropriate action against individuals who fraudulently obtain wheelchair and companion seats including, without limitation, ejection and legal action.

I would suggest calling the stadium.

    And yes,

The ushers enforce this rule. I've seen it happen.

I just bought a set of 4 tickets on ebay that are ada accessible. Nowhere on the listing did it say that you have to be handicapped to sit in the seats. However, I'm re-thinking my purchase now that I've read this thread. The tix are located in a main reserved section. Anyone care to share their experience(s)? Thx.

I always see wheelchair accessable seating on ebay but I usually stay away from them.

Thanks -- have you witnessed anyone being escorted from ada accessible seats if they are not in a wheelchair?

Yeah, I see that frequently as well. That's the lowest of the low. I wish Lonn Trost and co. would go after those cowards instead of hunting down season ticket holders who sell their tickets on the internet.

I bought tickets off a guy on ebay once tht had the wheel chair seats. I had no problems what so ever. you get a decent view of the field but the over hang stops you from seeing any high hit balls

just know that the actual cost of thse tickets are really low, they dont raise handicapped seating when they raise other seating.. I paid 100 for two tickets that actually cost abotu 40 bucks total. no big deal

Re: Ticket question regarding wheelchair seats.

My wife is in a wheelchair. Personally if we ever see anyone at any sporting event who is in wheelchar seating area who is not disabled we get very upset!

No matter how people end up in those seats is irrelevant, those seats are reserved for people with disabilities and that is the bottom line.

Thats because someone on ebay is selling them and not ticketmaster or the yankees. If I was there with my wife who is in a wheelchair, we would be pissed if we saw someone not disabled sitting in those seats.

That is not true at all, they went up this year.

Thanks all for the feedback. I've decided to donate these tickets to a charitable cause. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a VFW post or similar that would accept ticket donations such as these?

I bought tickets for Game 4 of the 2001 World Series not realizing that they were Handicapped. I felt horrible so I just kept walking around the stadium changing seats until people came. I actually ended up having nice Main reserved seats from a no-show.

Re: Ticket question regarding wheelchair seats.

I once bought a pair of tickets off ebay not knowing they were wheelchair accessible seats. I flew from Phoenix to NY just for the game so my 4 year old son could get an experience at the stadium before it was torn down. I was not happy to find out where the seats were when I arrived. And the usher was absolutely horrible about it. We were the only ones in the area for the first half of the game and she would not let my son move up to the glass so he could actually see the game. To this day, that experience left a bad taste in my mouth about the stadium.

I grew up with a father in a wheelchair suffering from MS, we used to see people in wheelchair seats all the time, but it did not upset us, there are more things to worry about. Besides, they might have a reason as I did for having those seats.

Well, if they are scalpers scarfing up the wheelchair seat tickets and selling them on ebay not described as wheelchair tickets they should be ashamed of themselves. That's pretty damn low!

To be fair, just because people are sitting there doesn't mean they are taking seats away from the handicapped. Yankee Stadium holds those tickets for the handicapped but the day of the game they will sell those tickets if they are not sold out.

When I tore my Achilles and was in a cast I would upgrade my seats to handicapped, if available because it was hard for me to get up and down stairs.

Interesting. I have a good friend who is a big Yankees fan, but (aside from living in Florida) she has MS and has trouble with the steps up in the Tier. She has never needed a wheelchair, but she does have official state-issued handicapped ID, is allowed to use handicap parking spaces, etc.

So, do we think that she would be allowed to sit in the "wheelchair" seating at Yankee Stadium? If so, it would be much easier for her to go to games when she's in town. Also, would I be able to go and sit with her as her companion? I mean, I don't have to push her around in a wheelchair, but I do kinda help her get around, carry stuff for her, etc., when we go to games.

If you have tickets to the game and go to the box office inside you can upgrade to the wheelchair seating if they have seats available. And yes, you could sit with her.

Edit: You just have pay for any price difference and it's not guaranteed that the seats are available. You might want to call the Yankees box office and see if they can answer that question.

Handicapped does not only mean confined to a wheelchair. In fact, many people are classified as handicapped that don't appear physically challenged.
If she has a handicapped ID, I don't see why she couldn't sit there.

My sister once was sent to that section after having a near panic attack in the upper deck. The ushers were very understanding and they took her over to the handicapped section. Not because she was handicapped, but I guess because that's what was available.

It's not fair of people to judge people sitting there assuming they just wanted cheap seats.

I know most people genuinely need the permit, but lets face it many people abuse the system. Should those people be sitting there? Nope.

No, but just because someone isn't in a wheelchair, doesn't mean they don't have a handicap of some kind. It's unfair to be annoyed at people sitting there without a wheelchair when you don't know anything about them.

You are correct but your missing the point. If the yankees let everyone sit in those seats who have handicapped placards it wouldn't be fair to someone in a wheelchair that needs a ticket and the seats are sold out, and that is excactly what would happen. They are called wheelchair seats for a reason.

Its just like when my wife tries to go to walmart and has to leave because all 25 handicapped spots are taken. She cannot just park anywhere because the cars are parked to tightly. Let's be honest, how many of those people can walk a little extra further? People these days think that once they get a little older they need a handicapped permit. No offense to anyone.

The ushers were wrong to seat your sister in the handicapped area. They should have sat her in some other unoccupied seat UNLESS there no unoccupied seats available.

You are making an erroneous generalization against older people. I see young people doing the same. It truly upsets me when I see a young healthy person (usually a female) park her car near the store waiting for someone to leave so she can get a close in space.
I am 68 and frankly I have no problem parking far, far away fron the store. The long walk does me good, and far from resenting it, I enjoy it. There are lots of oldsters like me who feel the same way. We don't feel entitled as many youngsters do.( sure I am making a generalization).

Finally, some rational thinking... you are absolutely right, both young and old people do the same.

I don't think I'm missing the point, just misunderstanding maybe. Is the section a wheelchair section, or a handicap section? If it's strictly wheelchair, then I see your point.

They are listed as wheelchair seats. You can see this online when you buy tickets.
