    Do you have "a guy"?

You know what I mean.. a guy for everything. A guy for fixing cars, a guy for fixing the refridgerator, a guy for getting cheap tickets. You qualify if you respond to the following statement: "I need ____", with "Oh, I have a guy that'll do it for you and he's real cheap."

How many people here have such a "guy"?

Smithers: Unlikely, sir. They spell and pronounce their names differently.

Re: Do you have "a guy"?

We have an electrician we have used for the past 6 years or so and have recommended him to people. He's not really cheap, but he knows what he's doing. After using others we didn't like, we are glad to have found him.

Other than that, can't think of anyone else off the top of my head. My husband is usually the guy everyone else calls for stuff.

I have a guy that does stuff for my car really cheap and I have a girl for everything else (telling me how I look, playing with my hair, cook for me, clean for me [little things!]). Needless to say although I need the guy to help me maintain my car to see the girl, I totally need the girl more.

well, he's not much a pusher. I kinda just drive there, walk in the store. He says "what's up?" I say "I want this album" and then he takes my money and I go home.

We had a computer guy. He was great. He could fix all kinds of problems and would load software in the computer for us (like Powerpoint and stuff), but he left the shop and went back to his country. Now the new guy we use doesn't give the same courtesies.

My dad has a ticket "guy" for when he's up in Boston. The game could be sold out for months, that guy will get my dad tickets behind home plate.

If only I had a "guy" like that for Yankee Stadium.

Same here, everyone calls my husband for everything...in fact I just had a friend ask me for his pager # at the grocery store not 15 minutes ago to do some electrical work!

He restores classic cars to a level that makes area professionals shake their heads in wonder, and it's just a hobby.

Our friends moved recently from a large house to a much smaller one, and brought a few select pieces of furniture with them and left the rest. One large entertainment armoir was her favorite piece. Welllll, the professional movers couldn't get it into the house, they ended up leaving it in the garage after having "their best crew" try. My friend called my husband in tears, asking if he had any ideas...
It was in the house wit the tv on within 2 hours...my friends just LOVE my husband.

So basically, Yeah, I have a GUY!

Yes, my family has "a guy" like that. He can fix anything. He knows basic electrical and plumbing work, and some carpentry. He asks for such a small amount of money that my mom will sneak extra bills into his pocket as he's walking out the door. I don't know how much money this guy has saved us over the years, but we are thankful to have him.

It's a shame I don't live up there. I have a 1966 mustang that I plan on getting restored soon. Been looking around and really haven't found a place/someone yet.

My dad and grandfather normally handle most of the carpentry/electrical/pluming stuff around the house. My grandfather redid our bathroom not too long ago.

It's hard/expensive if you have to send it out...any place that's really top of the line will be very expensive, and most of the time, any place that's really "cheap" will not do a very good job. They just won't put in the amount of time at that price.
Try to get references, and keep in mind that you want as little filler as possible. What kind of shape is the car in? Does it have alot of dents or rust/rot? Or is the metal pretty solid and straight? I'm pretty sure for a '66 Mustang you should be able to get NOS fenders etc if needed, or at least decent original ones if yours need replacing. That will make a huge difference in the cost and results. Alot depends on what your plans for the car is too. Is it a car you just want to look decent and drive around in, or for shows/resale etc? The paint job my husband just put on his Dad's Packard cost him over $1000 in paint but the local pro told my father in law that it would have been 6-8k to have it done by a shop. If you are just going to drive it around, you can get a decent paint job much cheaper from a franchise paint shop like Maaco, but not the body work.

Sorry, don't mean to hi-jack the thread...when PM's are enabled, feel free to PM me and we can talk more, maybe I can get some suggestions from my husband for you.

Re: Do you have "a guy"?

Jerry, the local handyman, is my guy! The guy's done so much work around my house the past two years he might as well move in. He's done it all here.....new siding on the garage, installing a privacy fence, brickwork, plumbing, electrical, roofing, drywall, windows. He's gonna remodel the kitchen and bathroom in a couple of weeks. Jerry doesn't charge an arm and a leg and I've got no complaints about the quality of his work.
