The biggest shock of my life....

During my wife's first sonogram this week the doctor tells us we have a suprise. Twins!!

I'm so numb to this I can't even tell if I'm nervous yet. maybe I am, I dunno.... I guess.

    Two of everything!

I'm happy as hell, but I just can't believe it.

It runs in her family we just found out. Now they tell us.

It's still sinking in. I've known for two days and I still can't believe it.

Yikes! That is quite the surprise. The idea of having twins always terrified me and I'm grateful I didn't have them, but all of the people I know who have had twins have done great. The infancy period is quite challenging, so hopefully you guys will have help. After they're older, though, it's nice because they each have a ready-made playmate which makes life easier for mom and dad!

Congrats and best wishes, Steve! Don't get overly over-wrought. Things have a way of working out. And don't be afraid to ask others for help!

Oh my. That must be quite the shock. Twins run in my family so I am at least prepared for something similar to happen.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!

It always terrified me but now that it's real it doesn't seem so bad. We've already got family and friends offering whatever help they can with babysitting, or doing errands or whatever. I'm just glad we have that because I dunno what I'd do without it.

It's good you know because when you want to have kids you'll be prepared. We had no clue! We've been buying things here and there but now we gotta start from the beginning again.

Twins run in my family as well, on both sides. I have twin cousins on my dad's side, and my mom's brother didn't have kids and my parents didn't have twins, so it's down to us kids to see who has the twins gene.

My uncle got the same surprise a few years ago.

Congrats Steve! That is awesome news. Although it's a little scary to think there are going to be 2 freakishly tall children with extensive sexual vocabularies running around years from now...

Was it your father's sister or sister-in-law who had the twins? It's actually a tendency to produce multiple eggs that's inherited, so if it was your dad's sister-in-law, then it wouldn't be inherited in your family.

    http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/b...fraternal?open

"Factors that increase the odds of having twins

Some women are more likely than others to give birth to twins. The factors that increase the odds include:

Advancing age of the mother - women in their 30s and 40s have higher levels of the sex hormone oestrogen than younger women, which means their ovaries are stimulated to produce more than one egg at a time.
Number of previous pregnancies - the greater the number of pregnancies a woman has already had, the higher her odds of conceiving twins.
Heredity - a woman is more likely to conceive fraternal twins if she is a fraternal twin, has already had fraternal twins, or has siblings who are fraternal twins.
Race - Black African women have the highest incidence of twins, while Asian women have the lowest.
Assisted reproductive techniques - many procedures rely on stimulating the ovaries with fertility drugs to produce eggs and, often, several eggs are released per ovulation."

"Having them in the family" doesn't seem to increase the likelihood of having them unless a woman is a twin herself, has already had fraternal twins, or has siblings that are fraternal twins.

Actually we spoke about this. I am hell-bent on not dressing them and treating them like the same person. They need to have their own personalities and interests. I don't care how cute it is to do the twin thing.

my solution? one gets a home yankees jersey, the other one gets the away.

But the Yankees thing won't be a problem, and I don't think Star Wars will. We're gonna have a music clash. Their mom is a Grateful Dead/Skynyrd type person and I'm Tool/Pantera. That will be a battle.

My dad's sister-in-law. My dad just has one older brother. The reason I mentioned it was because I remember my dad telling me he thinks that it's on his side of the family too.

Agreed though. My brother and I, though we're not twins, often get grouped together even though we're somewhat different. It's definitley annoying.

I bet you're daughter is excited to have some younger siblings soon.

I've always tried to bring my daughter up to know she doesn't have to be like anyone else, care what anyone thinks or let anyone tell her how she should act/dress, etc. Do what she likes, in the end, you're happier that way. It's important to me that we bring them up that way. No pressure to compete with the other or be lumped together with the other. Twins or not, they are individuals.

She's pretty excited. She's a wonderful older sister. Her mom had a baby 2 years ago so she's been here before. Good thing for me, in like 2 years I have instant babysitter!
