The dirt and sand covered field cost $50,000 to convert from an old soccer field with money donated from Major League Baseball and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which is sponsoring Graves' 10-day trip.
Part of the money was spent clearing unexploded ordnance from the field in an area where leftover remnants of the Vietnam War continue to kill and maim. In all, 17 explosives of varying types, overlooked when the soccer field was built, were removed between home base and the outfield.![]()
