Roasted French artichokes and a white cannelloni bean soup with chorizo and tomato, and onions.
Never made artichokes before, so cleaning them was an adventure.

I hit the farmer's market at Von Thun's here in South Brunswick hard today.
Just finished a great meal of Veal Saltimbocca with fresh prosciutto, mozzarella & baby spinach. The side was sauteed zucchini in extra virgin olive oil. Fresh leafy green lettuce with Jersey Tomatoes and cucumbers.
The wine was a newer vintage of Reserve de la Saurine Vin de Pays Du Gard.
For dessert, Vanilla ice cream with fresh Jersey Blueberries.
And for those wondering, they are not Jersey Tomatoes just because they grown in NJ. If you are interested, you can check out this website for more info: http://njfarmfresh.rutgers.edu/JerseyTomato.html

I finally pruned back a couple of my basil plants which were taking over my container herb garden. I made a basil/garlic butter along with a honey/thyme butter. I also steeped another few handfuls of basil leaves in boiling water and made a skin toner with witch hazel. I had a little basil water and honey left over so I mixed *them* together with some sugar and will use as a scrub in the shower. Then...I froze a few leftover basil bunches. With my next pruning I will make a batch of pesto...I would've today but have no pine nuts.
I'm kind of disappointed in my tomatoes right now....none seem to be getting very big and some blossoms have not set. What I've picked and eaten have been delicious though. I have high hopes for my pineapple and supersonics which are starting to flower.
Danielle, I bought a huge bunch of basil with the roots still on that I keep in a vase. I'm not going to cook with all of it, so I'm interested in those natural skin recipes. What are the amounts of basil and boiling water for the skin toner? And also the honey and water for the scrub?

Ooh just seeing this Karen. Really, I winged it based on a few random things I had read on the web, at least for the toner. Here is one site that is the most family-friendly and has other ideas. One of the sites was for witches or something.Originally Posted by krystl

The scrub I completely made up! But a woman whose videos I watch on youtube has made similar scrubs/masques before with honey, lemon, brown sugar. Actually...I may get some jojoba oil or similar from the health food store to add to the scrub. It exfoliated but is not emollient at all.
For the toner, I had a bottle of witch hazel with just a smidgen left in it, so I added the basil-water to that and am keeping it in the fridge. I've used it once and it smells nice and all but I really have no idea if it's doing anything special to my skin yet. I literally threw two handfuls of basil into a pot of boiling water and voilà![]()

I see Kitchen Aid, Cuisinart, and Braun get good reviews. Thoughts? I have never owned one before.
On a related whiny note: this is where the whole being single and never having a bridal shower or whatever sucks. I always have to buy my own stuff...
I have a Cuisinart that I love, and a smaller KitchenAid that I've had for a while that I like a lot too.Originally Posted by xenadanielle

Thanks Trish. Do you know what size the Cuisinart is? I'm not sure if I should get a really big one or not.Originally Posted by Trish
Yeah, I know my complaint isn't really valid. It's just that my mom sometimes beeyatches at me about all of her friends' daughters' bridal/baby showers she's gone to--and given very nice gifts for--over the years so she feels I've been gypped. Or she thinks I should at least have had some kind of housewarming party so people could help me outfit the kitchen etc. So I'm just seeing her point....
![]()
Yeah I see the point too, when I go to some of those showers. Thing is, I didn't get very many extravagant gifts for mine. Either my family/friends are cheap, or I don't rateOriginally Posted by xenadanielle
Edit: not sure of the size of the Cuisinart. I'll check when I get home. It's a good sized one...I wanted it for pie crust and that sort of thing. My KitchenAid bowl isn't big enough. I use it mostly for chopping vegetables.

I will just be foraging tonight. The bf is in the city for the second time this week to dismantle/move that #7 train tunnel-boring thing by the Javits Center.
I am also going to make some banana bread. I have a couple of yucky brown bananas. I'm trying another recipe that uses cream cheese.![]()

I made chicken breasts in the oven. I just marinated them in some Italian dressing and sprinkled some pepper and chopped scallions on them and baked them.
And I made a sliced zucchini/onion dish that I sauteed in olive oil.
Hubby was working on his bike, so dinner was delayed for an hour. The chicken was a little dried out, but still tasty.

Sooo....
I've been blabbing in here about all the basil I have. My sage plant has gone a little nuts too (as is the Greek oregano)...but when I went online to look up uses for too much sage the suggestions are sort of interesting:
I was going to use it to make chicken saltimbocca tonight but now the bf is back in the city for that tunnel boring machine thing again...
- Make bundles to "smudge" (Native American ritual thing).
- Make tea--it has medicinal uses for, uh, various female things.
- Use it to brush teeth.
- Also some normal stuff: use in stuffing, for roast pork/chicken, deep fry the leaves for garnish etc.

A friend of mine needed to get out of the house last night to clear her head, so she called me and we ended up at a place on the water, with a view of the TZ bridge in Tarrytown, called Striped Bass (it's in the Tarrytown Boat Club, which my parents used to belong to when we had a boat way back when). When I was a kid, the place was pretty much just a burger joint as I remember.
We had a soup sampler each (3 different kinds of soup in little espresso cups). The soups were lobster bisque, corn chowder with lump crab and clam chowder. Then we ordered a couple of appetizers to share. We had spinach and artichoke dip with tortilla chips, shrimp quesadillas (which looked and tasted more like potato knishes, weird!) and baked clams. The soups were my favorite.
Oh, and we shared a pitcher of sangria.![]()

We are going over to my parents' later. It's my Dad's and the bf's birthday, so we are having clams casino and other apps, lobster, corn on the cob, and salads, and flan for dessert. I can't decide if I want to make guacamole or not, or if I should bring over my other banana bread (which I froze). We're also bringing an Edible Arrangement I ordered that looks like a birthday cake.

I just spent the last 45 minutes tweezing the hair from duck legs. There has got to be a better way.

Burn it off. A little alcohol, a little fire, woosh. You can also melt some paraffin in a pot of hot water, dip the duck, cool, dip, cool then peel the wax off. The hair comes with it. A whole new spin on waxing your legs.![]()

Tonight: who knows, but I spotted a couple of ribeyes in the fridge this AM.
On a related note, has anyone been to this Pop Tart place in Times Square?
