I wish we had a Trader Joes around here. The closest one is 25/30 minutes away. I have never been to a Whole Foods store.

They finally opened up a Whole Foods near me about a year ago but I haven't gone there yet. I don't know why, since I loved the one in Manhattan.Originally Posted by krystl

It sucks, working has pretty much forced me to do one-stop shopping at Shop Rite. Which isn't bad, but I'd like to have the time to go to more of a variety of places.

I went to ShopRite the other day for the first time in a long time. A&P is closer, so I usually just go there. But I forgot how much I liked some of ShopRite's brands. Their cottage cheese is delicious and the kids prefer their Iced Tea mix over even Tetleys. I can also find items there that A&P doesn't carry.

Wow....I didn't know that. I wonder what they're going to do where I live. There is a Whole Foods and a Wild Oats within a few miles of eachother......I wonder if they'll close the Wild Oats location. I'll have to find out....now I'm curious.Originally Posted by yankeebot

The Shop Rite here is about one of the best supermarkets I've ever been in. They always have every brand I want, and if they don't, all you have to do is ask and they'll stock it.Originally Posted by krystl
Their prices are good, and their service is top notch. Even on a busy Sunday, there is never a long wait on a checkout line. Whenever I go to another store, I always curse myself.

I don't know but my mom has them both in adjacent shopping centers and the employees have been told that both will remain. We'll see but I find that hard to believe although they are both always packed.Originally Posted by 4bronxbombers

I went to Wild Oats in Tucson once a long time ago. I wasn't that impressed, but maybe it has changed. It probably was about 6 or 7 years ago when I was there.Originally Posted by 4bronxbombers

I just looked up locations for Whole Foods near me. There are only two in all of Arizona, and one of them is 1.9 miles from my house.![]()

Which Trader Joe do you live near? They only have a few on Long Island, just wondering which one is near you? And where is the Whole Foods store you are refering to. I haven't seen a Whole Foods on L.I. yet.Originally Posted by Trish

Any type of merger or acquisition has to be approved or go through an approval process so as not to allow for a monopoly. The article I read said they were waiting for it to be approved. But it will go through I'm sure.Originally Posted by 4bronxbombers

With regard to the whole issue of expensive markets...I'll pay just about any thing for good quality fresh produce. Not all the long ago I was 75 pounds overweight. I thought nothing of spending $$ on junk. Doritos, potato chips, etc. The same with fast food lunches. I'd drop a small fortune during the course of a week. When I realized that I was slowly killing myself I started exercising and eating smart. Now at 78 pounds lighter I'll not think twice if I want to spend $5.00 a half pound on bing cherries (roughly the price of a large bag of Doritos). Or I'll pay top dollar for nice fresh seafood. I look at it as I'm nourishing and preserving my body and I don't think you can put a price on that. I almost never buy lunch I usually bring a salad or homemade soup from home.....that in it's self saves me a ton of money each month. Sometimes it's all about priorities...at least for me.

Since my wife and I started participating on the weight loss thread we`ve noticed how much more expensive it is to eat a healthy life style. But if that`s the price we`re going to pay to stay healthy ....well so be it. Now I also realize how tough it is on the poor to maintain healthy when it`s cheaper to live on Mac and cheese. We`re in a sad state of affaires here in North America.Originally Posted by GiambiRocks

I totally agree with you there. I do not spare expense to buy what is healthy for me. I am lucky though because I have the outdoor farmers markets that come every week where I buy all my organic produce. There is a fish guy who comes there on Monday's who has very reasonable prices for high quality, fresh seafood. He supplies Whole Foods with their fish but I pay him about half what I would pay Whole Foods for the same fish. If I can get what I need for less I will. If I can't get something I want for less then I will pay whatever I have to. I have an Erewhon Supermarket near me where I get a lot of healthy foods and it is not cheap but still better prices than Whole Foods so I shop there alot.Originally Posted by GiambiRocks
Do you have the outdoor farmer's markets in Santa Barbera? I'm sure you have them as they are all over So. Cal.
That is so true! I feel sorry for poor families who can't afford good nutrition. That may be the reason for all the obesity in this country, and among children too.Originally Posted by montrealer
My food bill is not something I budgetfor the most part. I buy what I want to buy, and if that's expensive fruit and veggies, or a good cut of meat or fish, or some sushi, that's what I do. I probably could cut corners somewhere, but I just don't.Originally Posted by GiambiRocks
I used to spend even more when I had more time to go to various markets. There's a fruit & vegetable store a couple of towns over that have the best produce, bar none, of any I've ever had. I could drop 80 bucks in there with no problem in the summer. Then I'd go next door to the fish store, which has the great stuff too. We'd go to Manero's on the weekend for beef, which is out of this world from there.
I don't have the time anymore, but at least my supermarket has decent produce and fish.

For Home Depot, there's Lowe's. For CVS, there's Walgreen's. For Blockbuster....well, there's really not much else. There's the Hollywood Video chain, but there aren't nearly as many of them and I don't like them as well as I like BB.Originally Posted by 4bronxbombers

I do know about the affordability issue. I'm fairly certain that for what it cost for say a family of four to eat at Burger you could make a very decent sized pot of soup and get at least two meals out of it.Originally Posted by Octoberbaby

It's very true. Good, nutritious food can be make relatively inexpensively. A lot of people are just unaware of that fact, or don't have the time, which in my case is happens a lot. We're just so busy and running in different directions.Originally Posted by GiambiRocks

For me it's lack of time and energy. Unhealthy food is not only cheap; it's also quick.
So I went to the Whole Foods 2 miles from me. I bought 10 items and spent almost $35. I bought several "healthy" snacks, and those were expensive. It was super-expensive. It carries a lot of the same foods as the Sunflower Market - a very similar type health food market - that is catty-corner to my house. (I'm on the southeast corner of an intersection; it's on the northwest.) They did have more variety than Sunflower, but nothing I'd normally buy. And from the one time I went to Sunflower, I'd also say it's quite a bit cheaper than the Whole Foods. They have the fresh meat and produce that Whole Foods has, but I'd need to go there again to compare the prices. The Whole Foods meat looked really good, but was so outrageously priced that I'd probably never buy it. Again, I think the Whole Foods has a wider variety of stuff. However, I think when looking for healthier choices next time I'll try Sunflower Market again. Mostly the same stuff, much cheaper prices.
Here are links to the Sunflower Market pages:

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there are any East Coast locations.

Sunflower Market looks good. I would definately go there. And since we've been talking about groceries, any of you eastcoasters frequent Stew Leonards? I love that place. Karen, do you ever shop at Turcos (local specialty type grocery)? I like that a lot as well.
It's a good store. It's not as fancy-looking as Whole Foods, but with the same healthy-type/organic products at much cheaper prices, I don't really care how it looks.Originally Posted by yankeebot
They often have some really good sales that are advertised with mail flyers, as well. I'm trying to lose weight for the wedding, so I'm going to start actually looking at those Sunflower advertisements instead of automatically throwing them away! I noticed that their flyer is listed on the web site (obviously the West Coast site for me), as well, which is nice.![]()

If I had 3 wishes... One of my wishes would be to make a select few of you Pirates Fans.
It's another fresh foods type store: meats, fish, produce, bakery, etc. Really good prepared foods dept. Not as expensive as most of the others. They're also kind of known for costumed characters, animatronics and petting zoo.Originally Posted by Trish
