Thread: SNL- Worst show ever?

    SNL- Worst show ever?

The 1-14-06 show had to be one of the worst SNL shows in memory. Of all the stinkers I've seen, I'm struggling to find one that was as bad as last night's. The first 3 skits (including the monologue) were loaded with dumb songs. In one skit alone, "Good Morning Duluth" it was painful to watch that never-ending song. The bit wasn't funny at all, let alone having it drag on for what seemed like forever.

Also, is there anyone more annoying and less talented than Andy Samburg, especially as "shaggy" boy?

The only redeeming feature of this show was seeing Scarlett Johansson in a few tight outfits.

The skit with the submarine was funny and watching ScarJo for an hour is fun no matter what.

    I agree.

It is almost as if they don't even have any writers. It is painfully unfunny and all the talent has either been sapped out of the current cast members or wasn't even there to begin with.

They need to get rid of Tina Fey, she is an awful head writer. They also need to dump Sanz

There were 1-2 "OK" at best, skits, including the submarine. Not laugh-out-loud funny, but watchable. The rest were pure bombs.

Looking at Scarlett was the best part, indeed.

They have no talent left. Unfortunately, funny people don't need to start on a show like SNL because there are so many other ways now for comics to get fame.

I agree. MAD TV is so much better than them right now. And WTF is up with the guy who plays Bush? Could they have found a worser guy? I mean I sound more like Bush than that fool. He doesn't even look like him.

As a huge fan of the show, one of the biggest problems is casting a host. Al Sharpton, Paris Hilton, Colin Firth, not funny people.

SNL has not been consistently since the early 90's.

I was hoping for a "Lazy Suday" like digital short and the promos made it seem like Parnell and Samburg were going to do it. That was the only reason I watched last night's SNL. Unfortunately, I had to sit through an hour and a half of crap.

Although, I did like the sweet 16 skit.

That was probably the only quality skit. But, by then, it was almost too late to rescue the show.

I like the one from a few weeks back, when Samberg and Parnell were eating a big head of lettuce while talking

My girlfriend loves Napoloen Dynamite, and he hosted a few months back (November maybe). We watched the first skit, and it was so terrible. When the first skit's bad, you know you're in for a long night.

SNL needs to be revamped, when the shows bad, good guests don't want to come on, and like someone else mentioned, it's easier for comedians to get their breaks now. They don't need SNL.

I cant stand Samburg. He just isn't that funny by himself. I likee Bill Hader. He does some dead on impressions, but will probably be misused

It's time for SNL to revamp (the writers/cast) or go away.

It started looking real bleek for SNL in 1980-81, then it exploded with talent. Hopefully the same will happen

SNL will never equal what it was in the 70s and what it was in the early 90s. Those cast members made that show and everyone has been playing catch-up ever since.

You mean when Amy Poehler tried singing? She was OK, but it was obviously a spoof, like when she "sang" in some video. At least Scarlett can sing. Not great, but she's got a good enough voice to go on stage.

I haven't taken it seriously in about a decade, so I haven't watched much of it.

I thought the Super Sweet 16 skit was right on the money, but it was quickly negated by the Mr. Willoughby skit. The rest of the show was pretty painful. I'd rather see reruns from the Will Ferrell years.

Those were great, but have since been killed. I doubt they could pull that off now, you need both good actors and writers.

I only saw the skit like that MTV show Sweet Sixteen and I thought it was funny cause I can't stand those girls. But that show has gone down hill SO bad. I miss the people who were on when I started watching like Will Ferrell, Sheri Oteri, Molly Shannon, Tracy Morgan, Chris Kattan, Tim Meadows, Jim Breuer, Ana Gasteyer, Colin Quinn and Jimmy Fallon later on.

On the show now I like Darrell Hammond, Amy Poehler, Seth Meyers, Rachel Dratch. It's just not the same anymore. The talent isn't there.

I watched mainly because I'm a big Death Cab fan, and even they sucked... Deb said that it was probably the rest of the show that dragged them down into suckitude...

You must've missed its greatest shows ever, mostly from the late '70s and early '80s. There's nobody there now who could remotely match the following SNL legends:

    John "Sumarai Warrior" Belushi
Gilda "Roseanne ... Roseanna Danna" Radner (there actually was an ABC Eyewitness News anchor named Roseanne Scamardella at the time)
    Eddie Murphy

I liked when John Goodman was on there, including when he'd played Monica "Presidential Kneepads" Lewinsky, then that guy whose wife killed him, and he'd played Bush before that, but Jane Curtin and others just ruled.

The show was so bad this week, we stopped 20 minutes into it and erased what was left. The talent is there, the writing isn't. Sad, really.

I've seen most of the seasons actually, and own the best of Gilda and Belushi. Thats why i said 99-01 was A peak. Its been running for 31 years, theres more than 1 peak. Eddie Murphy was great, but he came after Belushi and Murray, he pretty much held that entire show up. When Joe Piscopo is your second best performer, theres problems

I think that Belushi, Akroyd, Curtin, Chase, Martin were about the best of the best. From what I remember, those oldies play around 3am on Sunday.

I don't remember when Murphy played, but since he was 19 and he's now in his early 40s, that must've been around the early '80s, around the time of Belushi's unfortunate death.

What were the best of 1999-2001? Also, what are all the peaks and lows?

I'm familiar with its being 31 seasons. I remember when "Live from New York" became a catchword. At one time, it was called "Saturday Night Dead", per the interest factor, and I'd nicknamed it "Saturday Night Taped", since they didn't do many original shows anymore for awhile.

The 80-81 season was the biggest low point ever. Everyone left, including Lorne Michaels. It was an awful season. Also 94-96 was also pretty bad. Its the periods of transition that seem to be the worst

The peaks after the original cast would be 88-93 with Farley, Spade, Dana Carvey, Chris Rock, Mike Meyers etc. with Conan O'Brien as one of the head writers

Recently it wasa from 98-02. They had a great cast (Ferrell, Oteri, Gasteyer, Tracy Morgan, Jimmy Fallon, Darrel Hammond, Kattan). They also had some great hosts like Chris Walken and Bobby DeNiro (for the first time ever)

So when was Jon Lovitz on? I remember him as the lying actor (or whatever that fancy word for actors is). "Yeah, ... that's the ticket!" When one season ended, I remember that Lorne Michaels had a "fire", and the only person he saved from the fire was Lovitz, indicating that he'd be the only one brought back for the following season. He'd pretty much held the show together like Murphy did earlier.

Farley was great. Unfortunately, he had a highly volatile personality. He took after Belushi, was much larger than Belushi, and in the end, self-destructed. Great physical comedian, and I remember when he'd danced like those male dancers at the famous place where women go to see male exotic dancers. Yeah, Chippendale's. He looked awesome, and seeing that much meat move was unbelievable. Like the big guy who made the rest of us feel like something.

Didn't Spade and Myers do that "Awesome" line or something? I think they also did "Dude, where's my car?" movie also, right?

Anyway, I think it was Carvey that did "Church Lady" and that awesome Church Lady dance. Oh, and this is Church Chat. Talk about my rolling on the floor.

Re "Ferrell, Oteri, Gasteyer, Tracy Morgan, Jimmy Fallon, Darrel Hammond, Kattan", that was a cast I liked. Something about them made me like them. They had personality. I only watched the first 20 or so minutes on Saturday, but it didn't seem as good as in the past. It seemed like the actor who'd been unfortunately shot by his wife (Hammond?) was a much finer actor than what I'm seeing now.

Cheri Oteri had one little hot bod on her. Reminded me of that '90s Brit singer, Samantha Fox, also about 5'1". Talk about being Type A and funny as hell. I also remember her from Kennan Ivory Wayans movie about some horror spoof. Carmen Electra made an opening scene appearance (what's those things where they only appear once in a movie?), and then Tori Spelling was also in it. Anyway, Oteri played a reporter who wanted to get a little "friendly" with one of the guys in the flick.

I remember DeNiro's appearance. After his 2nd Focker movie w/Streisand came out. He'd played some general or something in the opening scene, right?

I still miss the old shows. Seems nice now, but doesn't have that "Laugh-In" type of eclectic humor as before. I remember back in the days, they had Belushi and someone else complaining about how all of their humor had upset someone. They even said that they're now going to insult people from a far away galaxy from a planet that doesn't even exist!!! Sure enough, there's some alien showing up from some planet that doesn't exist and getting on their case.

    *THAT* was funny.

Lovitz and Dennis Miller came in with the 84 or 85 cast. It was a good one.

Meyers and Spade didn't do Dude Wheres my Car. Meyers did Austin Powers and Shrek, Spade did the TV show Just Shoot Me

Phil Hartman was the one shot by his wife. I forgot to add he and Sandler to the 88-92 cast. Hartman was awsome

DeNiro played the army officer reading off the fake terrorist names. Harry P. Ness

Mike Myers also did some "Cat in the Hat" movie. http://www.eonline.com/Facts/People/...,23426,00.html

I was about to say the Grinch, but I think that was Jim Carrey.

Spade I like in that Just Shoot Me commercial. He's funny as heck, playing the itty bitty guy who's trying to be a stud, but is skinny as heck. They had one episode where one lesbian mistook him for a girl. Problem was she was a "Howard Stern" type of lesbian, so it was "Hey Now" time. What happened was she walked out on him when she asked, "What is *THAT*?", and we all know what "that" was. On another episode, he'd romanced Rebecca Romjin-Stamos.

Phil Hartman, I only saw a few times. Adam Sandler, I think I missed completely.

DeNiro's an awesome actor, especially in Bronx tale (I don't see too many movies), but on SNL, he didn't seem too good. Like he was reading from a script. I remember in one movie (perhaps the mob one w/Billy Crystal where he'd needed a shrink), and some guy said, "You're a *TERRIBLE" actor", and then the camera shot straight to DeNiro. Only a great actor like him could get away with this, per things like Jake LaMotta's b&w movie.

Strangely, I liked Britney Spears when she'd both hosted and was musical guest there (she'd been musical guest before), so I guess that my standards must be warped. Either that or I'm expecting more, since his name is Robert DeNiro.

I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to SMB the same way again. Just awful...

It was really that bad? I'll have to search for it online. Or maybe I shouldn't. I love that song and don't want to ruin it for myself.

Not many artists can pull of singing live in that setting. Some can (Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, U2, Beck), many can't. I've heard interviews with performers who say that show is the hardest to do.
