I didn't read the article save "pigs that glow in the dark", but you can make just about any "glow-in-the-dark" organism with gene splicing and recombination, and then cloning.

You simply extract the genes that code for bioillumination from the cell of an animal that does so - fireflies, jellyfish, deep sea angler fish - there's loads. You then recombine the gene splices into zygote genomes of normal organisms - pigs, fungi, bacteria, rats, small children. Clone the result if the animal is sexually reproducing - no cloning needed for our asexual friends - grow the organism, and VOILA - "glow-in-the-dark" pets.

We did it with bacteria in Microbiology last semester. It's really quite simple with a proper lab.

I'd recommend folks not try this at home.

Actually, the best they would accomplish is probably a whole lotta firefly bug juice everywhere...and not much else. It could be comical.

More like green ham and eggs than anything else.

Is that stuff suitable for human consumption? I've never seen a pig with a green nose before. Then again, knowing these mad scientists, they'd likely make Rudolph's nose red instead of green also.

Little Virginia wouldn't be too pleased.

Taiwan is not claiming a world first. Others have bred partially fluorescent pigs before

It's not about the pig being green - it's about what they've been able to do with genetics. This has all kinds of applications despite the fact that it's in rather early stages.

Good point I guess. Maybe it will lead to something more important.
