Ah yes, the Center for Consumer Freedom. The same organization who claims obesity is not a problem in this country. So if they are so outraged that PETA cannot adopt and save every animal that it rescues, what are they doing to save the animals?

FWIW, I'm in no way a PETA fanatic. I just think the Center for Consumer Freedom is a b.s. organization that should not be taken seriously. They're essentially a mouthpiece for the food lobby (no pun intended).

I included them in my high school senior exit project on animal cruelty. I'm against it but unfortunately I still use some of the products being tested on animals.

I'm not familiar with them, but obesity isn't a "problem" in that it's not the food lobby's fault that so many people can't resist having french fries with everything.

Agree with your basic point but the center for consumer freedom actually tries to refute data from the CDC that indicates that an unhealthy diet can lead to disease and death.

What...you mean eating 5 lbs of bacon with every meal is bad for you?

Like I said, I don't know the group from a hole in the wall. I'll take your word for it. Although I can't imagine any food lobby arguing that all foods are created equal in terms of health.

It's not our fault evolution put tasty animals on the lower part of the food chain.

Their primary beef (once again, no pun intended) is with a CDC study that indicated that 400,000 Americans die annually from obesity related illnesses. The Center for Consumer Freedom claims the study was flawed and the number is inflated. Even if this is true, there is still undisputable evidence that obesity increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. I agree wholeheartedly that if I eat nothing but Big Macs and Sausage McMuffins for 60 Years and keel over from a heart attack, I have only myself to blame. That being said, I fail to see the public service that this organization is doing by promoting an unhealthy diet. Overstated or not, obesity is still a problem in this country.

Wait wait wait - if the numbers are flawed, then that's not nothing. Of course obesity increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes - is the CFF claiming otherwise or something that the CDC is overstating it? I don't see a problem with the latter if it's a legit gripe.

Obesity is a problem that has nothing to do with the food industry.

Obesity is a problem that has nothing to do with the food industry.
CCF is claiming that the CDC study is flawed in the respect that it overstates the number of annual deaths caused by obesity. Essentially they take the position that obesity isn't really a problem because only 26,000 people die each year from obesity-related illness instead of the 400,000 that the CDC claims.

My problem with CCF is they use the "flawed" CDC study as an excuse to dismiss the importance of eating healthy and exercising. As I mentioned earlier, overstated or not, obesity is still a problem in this country. I'm not saying it is the food industry's fault, but CCF is lying when it insinuates that someone who eats crap and never exercises is at no greater risk for heart disease or diabetes than someone who eats a balanced diet and exercises regularly.

Sorry, I couldn't finish that vid, cm. Then again, I don't wear fur. I just eat beef, goat, chicken, turkey, etc. Still, wouldn't want to see any slaughterhouse pix, which the vegetarians keep reminding me of.

I could care less about slaughterhouse pics. Their deaths mean I can stay alive. If they're tortured or killed in some inhumane way, it is unfortunate, but in the end, it ends up in my stomach and helps me grow. Skinning an animal alive is a completely different story and it's understandable why you coudln't finish it.

    Re: PETA kills animals

People on either side of the vegetarian argument can be wrong. It is wrong of a meat-eater at the same table as a vegetarian to dangle a piece of steak in the face of a vegetarian and say "man this is good, you are a nut for not liking it". But it is also wrong for vegetarians to preach to a meat-eater that we are wrong because of how the animals are killed. If you are a meat-eater, that is good for you, doesn't mean it's right for everyone. Same to the vegetarians. Just because you think eating meat is cruel, doesn't mean others do.

As far as PETA is concerned. I am an animal lover, but PETA crosses the line way too many times.

I never thought that people actually skinned animals alive. Is there some aesthetic improvement in the way the fur looks when it's killed that way? Look looks and feels softer?

Still, looking that that thing moving and how different and gruesome it looked w/o its fur was pretty bad. I've seen the hitting of the otters before (or was it a racoon?), and that was pretty bad. One of the typical PETA ads or commercials.

Yeah, I love beef, goat, chicken, turkey and stuff. I also prefer the vegetarians who aren't constantly trying to make me guilty for daring to eat differently than they do. I sometimes wonder if I should change my religion to theirs and mirror their entire lifestyles, while I'm at it.

Yes, the video is horrible but in typical PETA fashion, where is the back-story? Do they tell you that it was not the fur companies but individual, small-operation farmers in China that they were being filmed? Do they tell you that China has since banned the practice? That the fur is of less quality if the animals are skinned alive therefore making this the practice of only an ignorant few?

I work with animals for a living. My livelihood depends on people wanting to do what is best for there pets but I cannot respect an organization like PETA that advocates placing animals on an equal ethical plane with humans.

I was thinking the same thing - where is the information behind the video? Where did that come from?
