Puerto Rico may bow out of WBC

Puerto Rico May Bow Out of World Classic
    By LUIS R. VARELA
    Associated Press Writer
Baseball officials reapplied Thursday for a permit that would allow Cuba to join next year's inaugural World Baseball Classic as Puerto Rican athletic officials said San Juan should withdraw as a host city if the Cubans aren't allowed to participate.

    Rightfully so.

It's just another plan for Bud lite to squeeze some international exposure into the game.

The risk of injury just isn;t worth it- not to mention the politics that have reared it's ugly head

Re: Puerto Rico may bow out of WBC

This thread title isn't really accurate. It's just Puerto Rico withdrawing as a site, not as a team. While that would be disappointing for Puerto Rico residents who wanted to go to a game, and players who wanted to be able to play in their homeland, it really doesn't affect things for anyone else.

What a mess this is turning into. Do they plan on having it every year? I have a feeling this might become the XFL of baseball.

I thought it was every few years, but I could be mistaken.

Believe me, we know our situation. How can we be a country if we're born U.S. citizens? Yet... still we get treated as a foreign place. It's not easy being Puerto Rican, it's hella confusing.

    ....

I'm still for the WBC IF Cuba's allowed to play.

    ....

Puerto Rico sould really give up hosting the games anyway because the only teams that will play here are really not that exciting to watch... The Dominicans will play in Florida even though the DR is licks away from PR...

We're hosting, excuse me, the Netherlands?????

They could give me the ticket for free and I wouldn't be caught there dead.

I'll root for Puerto Rico and the U.S. from my living room, thank you.

Re: Puerto Rico may bow out of WBC

Phil Mushnik gave some ammunition for anti-WBC folks in the Post today.

    http://www.nypost.com/sports/59325.htm

Any time you take members of teams and leagues and divide them based on ethnicity, you're asking for fans to root for or against those players based on ethnicity — the players' and the fans'. And nothing good can come from that.

Should Mariner fans suddenly root against Ichiro Suzuki because he's Japanese? Must Phillies fans shelve their affection for Bobby Abreu because he's Venezuelan? Why would baseball essentially demand that our rooting interests be rooted in nationality?

Sure, I'll root for the U.S. team. I'm easy. Still, I don't like to be forced to root for the winner of a baseball game the way I'd root for the winner of a war. While we're at it, why not go all the way? The World Raceball Classic: Double elimination. Team Asian, Team Caucasian, Team Hispanic and Team Negro. Think of the ratings! The merchandise! "Get you White Team pennants, here!"

What is the over/under on this guy's tenure at Fox. I'd say two weeks, but that may be optimistic.

Me too. It expressed my sentiments exactly. What was I was noting was the location. Fox is owned, ultimately, by Rupert Murdoch, who is only a little to the right of Mussolini.

Their line up will have Manny, Ortiz, Vlad, Tejada, Pujols, Polanco and Soriano in it. They're going to mash.

But if it's pitching you're worried about, they have Pedro and Colon as a good 1-2 punch.

I dont see anyway they can lose. They're a ridiculously stacked team.

Can't the position players only play 5 innings a game or something? As for the pitchers, aren't they limited to 3 innings?

I think I read somewhere it's a pitch count of 50. Which is probably 3 innings or less.

i could see Pedro going 7 or 8 finnings or the DR ... this is all about pride for Pedro and you think he would back away? oh hell i think he will come out trying to give everything he has to make sure the DR wins this thing.

Anyone on a MLB 40 man roster is under such restrictions (5 innings for position players, 50 pitches for pitchers to start) anyone not on a 40 man roster is not limited in the amount they play which makes the tournament to me a joke.

While the title topic is misleading, I think it's strange that a city selected to host a round of games for a tournament would decline. I don't recall one Olympic or Soccer World Cup (I know, they are established entities) chosen site declining to host. This tournament from Cuba to this has more water coming on board than anything.

They should just do it by continent. Six continents face off against each other, and whomever wins the most is the king of baseball. That way we don't have to worry about which island nation is going to play, whether Italy is better suited than Norway, etc. Of course, I'm not sure if Africa can field a team, even if it is the entire continent.

Maybe we should just divide teams based on the pigmentation of your skin. Darkies here, paleskinned there, brownies here, yellers there...I see no problems with this.

King of Baseball, huh? I got a kick out of that, Chris. And it's heartening to see someone else has the same take on this sort of crap.
