Thread: What position is most important for the Yanks to upgrade/supplement, 1B/DH or CF?

What position is most important for the Yanks to upgrade/supplement, 1B/DH or CF?

There are plenty of discussion threads on each, but if the Yanks only upgrade/supplement one position, meaning signing a new DH/1B and keeping Bubba in center or signing a CF and keeping Giambi/Phillips at the the 1B/DH positions, which would you want to see happen and why?

easily CF. I think if we have a good CF, we can get by with Phillips playing some 1B/DH

however....we CANNOT win a ring with Crosby/Bernie in CF, AND Phillips getting major time at 1B/DH

    Jesus Montero since June 1 (286 at-bats):
    .325/.386/.605/.991
    July 1 (182 at-bats):
    .348/.417/.658/1.075

CF should have been the first priority last offseason and it should again be the first priority this season. Going into the season with Bubba/Bernie as the CFers will be disastrous once again.

Yep. Giambi can DH, Sheff can DH, etc. Plenty of current players can DH, none of them can play CF adequately.

The strength of a team lies up the middle: Catcher, SS/2B, and CF. Always has, always will.

The average AL 1B last year hit .271/.343/.457 while the average AL CF hit .268/.322/.407. Assuming that they are both average defensively at their respective positions, the question becomes, who is more likely to get closest to that offensive average with the bat, Phillips or Crosby. I think it's Phillips.

Centerfield and even Rightfield. Giambi should play more first base. I think Bubba can play one of those two. Get Jacque Jones to play the other and we're good. Or give Reese, Melky, Thompson etc a shot.

If Nomar falls through then I'm wondering which player Cashman is targeting to either be his main DH and allow Torre to rotate different guys like Matsui, Sheffield and Giambi into that role? Maybe, Burnitz or someone similar.

    Agreed, amico mio.

I really like Bubba, but he's a backup (at least right now)

CF, no question. Phillips playing in a few games won't drastically hurt the team. Bubba playing 100 plus games will.

    Nomar is a Dodger now

He would be a great 1b against righties!
