The relief market is insane this year. 3 years for $13.5 for freaking Braden Looper? He was horrible last season and had a huge decline from his 2004 year. His K/9 last season was 4.10 and his K/BB was 1.23 last season. His G/F ratio was okay but it was a big decline from his average... Horrible deal.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.”
13.5 million for Braden Looper?
Goodbye Looper. New York will not miss you.

Never left the Betances bandwagon.
Its official. Baseball is broken.
His peripherals aren't as good but Looper still has a career ERA+ of 118... 19 points higher than Farnsworth, more consistant and for less money.
It's not a great deal by any means, but its not terrible. I think he got just about what he should've.
Ask any Met fan if they think Looper should have gotten a $13+ million contract.Originally Posted by swityak11
ERA+ is a bad stat for relief pitchers. Plus, Farnsworth was not the pitcher in his early career that he is now.Originally Posted by swityak11
And, "his peripherals aren't as good" is an understatement. Looper's peripherals last year were horrendous. If he has those same peripherals this coming year, I bet his ERA is in the mid 4's, if not worse.
3 years for a guy that showed that much of a decline from 2004 to 2005 is a horrible deal.

Looper? What are the Cards batty?
Farnsworth's ERA+ is about a 132 if you factor out his time as a starter at the beginning of his career.Originally Posted by swityak11

I think even Looper was shocked that he got that much

You've got nothing to believe in but believing in yourself.
Is it just me, or does Looper always have the vintage Tanyon Sturtze "I'm So ................ing Scared" look each time he comes in to pitch?

Wasn't he pitching in some pain last season? His OPS-against numbers against righthanders have always been terrific, even last year. For a while I was touting him for the Yankee pen as a possible complement to Myers, but seeing the crazy contract the Cardinals just handed him, it's obvious that was never a realistic scenario.
He should do well in St. Louis, though. Unlike Looper's previous managers, LaRussa will understand how to use him properly, by limiting his exposure to lefthanded hitters in high-stakes situations. That's a ridiculous amount of money to give out to a ROOGY, though.
Looper I think would be a very solid right handed specialist.
Three year splits:
BAA- .229
OBP- .289
SLG- .287 (!)
OPS- .575
That's ownage.
