Gammons: LA close to landing Soriano

Gammons is reporting on ESPN Insider that the Dodgers are close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano for right-handed pitching prospect Jonathan Broxton. Sounds like a great trade for LA and makes me wonder where Cesar Izturis will land once he comes back, sometime around July.

Gammo is on fire. Keep slinging stuff at the wall. Some of it is bound to stick.

What are they going to do with Jeff Kent? This makes no sense.

    Kent will move to first.

If this happens I can see Soriano's numbers continue to decline, going from extreme hitters park in Texas to waht can be considered a pitchers park in L.A., I really am glad we got A-Rod for him when we had the chance.
The loser now will be later to win...

Soriano is going to have a .305 OBP in LA. good grief

Re: Gammons: LA close to landing Soriano

Surely the Rangers can get more for him than Broxton. I kinda doubt it's true.

But it would be fun to watch Soriano try and swing for the fences in LA.

Heh. It will be funny to see the reaction in LA when the Dodgers are even worse in 2006 without that evil DePodesta and his crazy computer running things.

If Gammons is correct one out of 12,893 times (sounds about right), Gammons lovers fans will throw it up in everyone's face.

Re: Gammons: LA close to landing Soriano

Interesting. Broxton throws a knuckleball right? I guess this means Izturis might come back later than expected. And when he does come back does he play 3rd? Any chance we can get Hee Seop Choi from the Dodgers? hmmm.

Bad trade. They already have 3 starting middle infielders with Furcal, Izturis, and Kent.

If they move Kent to 1B, where does Choi go? I'd rather have a young Choi in the lineup than Kent.

Re: Gammons: LA close to landing Soriano

Choi has got pop, and a hyphenated name. Recipe for success. In all seriousness though they dont seem to really want him anymore, never know what another change of scenery could do for him. Maybe Donnie can help him turn it around.

Choi was one of Depodesta's boys - so it figures he will be jettisoned off.

I don't know why you would...Choi's .330 OBP last year was fairly unimpressive...a 38 year old Kent will most likely be a much more productive option, a year removed from yet another solid offensive season.

Because an OPS+ of 110 at age 26 is potential. Kent only has the potential to decline.

    Choi's career OBP is a healthy .349.

Broxton, a top pitching prospect, for a 2B who can get on base is a joke

If the Dodgers do this then they are bigger idiots than I ever imagined (and no one can blame DePo for this)

    Looking at this again..

    This is even more ridiculous.

A pitcher with a 3.17 ERA at Double A with 107/31 K/BB in 97 innings who in limited action had 22 strikeouts in 13 innings at the major league level, including 2 strikeouts of Albert Pujols, for a 2B who is atrocious on the road and would have it worse from hitters park to pitchers park?

On top of that, Soriano is an absolute butcher in the field. It's amazing some of the people that they let run baseball teams.

You're right. Soriano doesn't fill any of the Dodgers' needs (outfield). But here is what is being bandied about.

DALLAS - The Dodgers are actively engaged in talks with Texas about a possible trade for Rangers second baseman Alfonso Soriano, but it isn't clear where he would fit. Any such deal likely would include Dodgers pitching prospect Jonathan Broxton, who made his major-league debut last season.
There were whispers on Tuesday the Dodgers might want Soriano to play first base, presently a black hole in their lineup, but a club official denied that. There is no room for Soriano at second because Jeff Kent will play there until Cesar Izturis returns from the disabled list sometime around the All-Star break, when Kent probably will move to first to make room for Izturis at second.
And yet they continue to chase infielders.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers continue to pursue free-agent third baseman Bill Mueller, who is believed to have received a two-year offer from Pittsburgh. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said he has made an offer to at least one of the three free-agent third base possibilities - Mueller, Joe Randa and Nomar Garciaparra - the Dodgers are interested in, but wouldn't say which one. Colletti also said he isn't opposed to signing a third baseman for two years despite the belief prospect Andy LaRoche will be ready to play every day in 2007.

I just really doubt that the Soriano part of this happens.

The Gammons hatred on here always makes me laugh.

Here's what happens in many cases... In this scenario, Texas tells Gammons that a deal is imminent for Soriano to fluster other teams and bump up existing offers or get new teams involved. Every team does this and every writer is a victim of this. Just the other day a few NY reporters got taken on the Benson "imminent" trade.

Gammons also broke the trade last night with Washington.
