Thread: Wow Yanks trying for Willis

    Wow Yanks trying for Willis

While the cost-cutting Marlins still are refusing to lower their asking price of Robinson Cano for Juan Pierre, they have begun to tell teams that every player on their roster - including Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera - is available for the right price .

The Yankees threw out the names of Cano and Chien-Ming Wang in passing as possibilities for Willis, the Marlins' dynamic lefthander, but the Marlins told them it would take a lot more than that, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.
    .

    http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseba...orts-headlines

Willis is one of the few players Id offer Cano/Wang AND another high level hitter for. He is extremely young and absolutely dominant. Furthermore he seems like the exact personality type that would flourish in the NY spotlight. Young dominant pitchers are probably the single hardest thing to aquire and Willis is exactly that. We can go out anytime in almost any FA and pick up a quality hitter (besides the fact that our O is already stocked for the next few years).
Thats why I hated the Beckett deal. He isnt as proven/durable (yet) as Willis but he has shown he can be dominant and is pressure tested ('03 WS anyone?) I wouldve been alot more aggressive for him. The only saving grace for the Yanks would be his durability (perhaps thats what held them back).

With Randy on his last legs literally and figuratively, if we have an opportunity to aquire a young dominant pitcher, we need to pull out all the stops.

It would cost the Yankees Cano, Wang, Duncan and probably Hughes to get Willis. That would essentially put the Yankees back to having a fairly bad farm system. No thanks.

Re: Wow Yanks trying for Willis

Who in the world do the Yanks (low salary, great potential) have that other teams can't at least match that would interest the Marlins? If they won't take the combo of Cano/Wang, I'm afraid there's not much more to offer. I think they'd want somebody who was more ready than Duncan too.

it'd have to be wang, cano and insert blue chip prospect currently not found anywhere at any level in the yankee organization for willis.

forget it. this will never, ever happen.

I have to disagree. Wang, though I like his cool, is still an injury risk and who knows if he's going to be what we want him to be. His low k-rate still concerns me some. Cano comes nowhere near the value of Willis.

Dontrelle Willis is a stud, and will be a dominant pitcher for a long time. If I can get him for Cano, Wang, Duncan...I'm doing it in a second.

i'm already on record saying i'd deal arod for that kid.

no honestly, the AL would give a collective OOOH SHIIIT if NY somehow pried him out of florida.

Re: Wow Yanks trying for Willis

    Willis was 22-10 with a 2.63 ERA.

He is lefty and a big, durable kid.

I'd give them absolutely anything shy of Jeter, Arod or Rivera.

That move would hurt the Yankees more than it would aid them. You don't trade the MVP of the league, I'm sorry. A-Rod is a safe bet to knock in 100 and hit over 30 HR's a year. If the Marlins asked for A-Rod, I'd laugh in their face.

This would never happen. I think they are in this to keep the price up which would keep him out of the hands of Boston or Baltimore. I like Willis, but I can't see the Yanks trading the system for him.

Somehow get Melky into the deal and off our hands and I'll be ecstatic.

Fascinating, but as pointed out elsewhere - other teams can offer as much or more than the Yankees for Willis, and are arguably in greater need anyway. The one advantage the Yankees would have is of being able to absorb more in the way of payroll, but the Marlins have already dumped Lowell. Had we known that Willis was available earlier, I'd have gone for Wang+Duncan+Henn+? for Willis and Lowell, or something like that, with Lowell's salary possibly taking the place of Cano.

Then A-Rod to SS and Jeter to CF (yeah, flame away) and you're set. Too late now - if Willis is traded, the Yankees seem like one of the least-likely destinations to me. Still. Can't hurt to ask.

And rightfully so. I would definitely trade 3 or 4 "could be's" for one sure-as-hell "already is".

For Willis/Pierre I would be willing to send: Cano, Wang, Duncan, Proctor, Hughes, plus a lower pick.

Upgrades CF, upgrades Wang/Proctor/Hughes into a legitimate, 24-year-old ace at the cost of Cano. Upgrades a 2-3 year away prospect (Duncan) into a starting CF (Pierre). Whatever downside to losing some prospects is offset by getting a surefire and established young ace in Willis.

Re: Wow Yanks trying for Willis

Get Willis, include Cano and others in the deal, sign Nomar for one year at 2B and see how he shakes out, get a good LOOGY and middle reliever and Cashman can relax the rest of the winter.

I think everyone is forgetting Willis would be switching leagues too. Do you think this would effect his dominance at all? This isn't the best example, but he got lit up in the All-Star Game.

Re: Wow Yanks trying for Willis

How about ARod (plus salary), Cano, and Wang for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle? Helps the Marlins out TREMENDOUSLY you know, taking those two players off their hands.

Sarcasm aside, I'd deal Cano, Wang and either Duncan OR Hughes for Dontrelle. Not both. I'd prefer to deal Duncan than Hughes, as I feel bats are easier to come by than pitchers, fwiw.

I'd do the above in a heartbeat as much as I'm not enamored with Pierre, but your trade does address CF and gets us one of the top young pitchers in the game.

I gotta say... I'm worried about Willis down the line. His pitching action is going to make him prone to an injury sooner or later. Also, I'm one of those that doesn't want to trade the farm away for this. The asking price is going to be VERY VERY steep and I'd rather not.

If Willis was on the Yankees next year, his ERA would probably be a little over 4.00. Still very good, but not amaazing. Then again, he is only 23 so he could still become a better pitcher.

The Yankees already talked to the Marlins and offered Cano and Wang and the Marlins said that's where the negotiations would start.

The Marlins are in full rebuild mode. If they're going to trade their franchise pitcher, they're going to want a lot in return. Hughes would be a must in the deal.

Re: Wow Yanks trying for Willis

    You cannot trade draft picks.

You cannot trade a player you just drafted until one year after they sign a contract. A PTBNL must be settled on within 6 monhs, so no one from the 2005 draft can be traded.

    Beware of Florida pitchers.

Cano/Wang ARE a great starting point throw in Duncan and thats one hell of a package...two guys that arent just prospects but are MAJOR league proven AND cheap. I dont know how many teams can beat that package . Marlins will probably want to field a somewhat competitive team next year Cano and Wang give them to players who can start and produce NOW cheap and w/o
    the growing pains.

Dont forget we are stocked with hitters and it is MUCh easier to aquire hitting than dominant pitching ..we can afford to give up a young hitter or two for a stud like Wills.
