Not a rumor: just a thought (Braden Looper)

Braden Looper is not going to be offered arbitration by the mets so he would not cost a draft pick.

Could he fit the bill as the 6-7th inning man on the yankees, and possible insurance for farnsworth? I know hes not ur lights out guy but he is still very good and shouldn't be totally ignored.

Not a bad idea, but if we add Myers, and keep Proctor up here, I don't see him fitting.

Check out his numbers against righties they are pretty sick. If the Yanks can get a quality LOOGY and sign Looper they can turn every game into 6 innings and then Looper/LOOGY then Farnsworth then Mo. Of course Looper will most likely get more money to close for a small market team.

I would prefer him to Julian Tavarez

Since it doesnt look like the Mets won't be offereing Looper abirtration (rotoworld) it might not be a bad idea ot pick him up. I like the idea of Looper back in a setup role or middle relief.

There are a lot of teams that need a closer and some of these teams are not bad options;among them:

    1)San Diego-If they don't re-sign Trevor Hoffman
2)Cleveland-If they miss out on Trevor Hoffman
    3)Pittsburgh
    4)Florida
    5)KC
    6)Baltimore
    7)Arizona
    8)Cincinnati

IMO,Looper will be closing for one of these teams.

Farnsworth has more upside and younger. They are thinking if farnsworth is good or very good then he can be the yankees future closer.

    I'd rather Rudy Seanez.

Rudy Seanez would be the better choice. Especially since Looper's NY experience was less than enjoyable for him

Looper can close else where. I don't think he'd accept such a drastic role change to sign with the Yankees.

Maybe but maybe he wants to win and not just to close and would be willing to be a setup kind of guy. You never know.

Looper could be a terrific pickup and I believe he's younger than Tavarez as well. I'd love to have him.

And it would bug the Mets, which is an additional fringe benefit.

All the Mets fans I know would laugh in my face if we acquired Looper. I know several that would gladly pay his subway fare uptown if he'd promise not to pitch for the Mets again.

Since when do we care about bugging the Mets, anyway?

He wouldn't even be a main set up guy. He'd be a 7th inning guy, and I think that is why we picked up Sturtze's option. The Yankees can't expect free agents like Looper to want to take such a drastic role change.

EDIT: in 2005, Looper blew 8 saves for the Mets.

Looper stunk it up for the Mets. He might as well have had more wins than saves as it seemed that whenever I caught him pitching he'd blow his save opportunity.

Re: Not a rumor: just a thought (Braden Looper)

I love the idea of having Looper. Look, he was decent, not great, decent as Mets closer. He had a bad year but was plaugued by some nagging stuff. Nothing to worry about, but last year (04) he was pretty good.
And let's face it, We have out primary setup man and closer, we'd ask him to be number 3 in the pecking order. I can think of worse things. I'd rather have him out there in the 7th than Sturtze. He has already played in NY for two years, so there is a familiarity with the city and the press, and again, he was not the second coming but he was not half bad when healthy. I'd take a shot, he is better than what we have and we would not have to give up anything, I like the idea..

Hey, we need all the relievers we can get. If the Yanks get the reliever who pitch to LH and RH batters, than get all the LOOGY's and ROOGY's you can find.

Unless the Phillies are lavishing an exorbitant (Howry/Eyre-like) contract on him, it is absolutely mind-boggling that the Yankees would prefer to keep Sturtze than go with Looper. (This could also help kill that Sturtze+ for Michaels rumor )

Sounds like another team I know that's only made minor improvements and still has two or three serious holes left.

That is an atrocious deal for the Cardinals. Look at the decline he had from 2004 to 2005:

    His K/9 in 2004 was 6.48. In 2005 it was 4.10. His K/BB in 2004 was 3.75. In 2005 it was 1.23. His G/F ratio in 2004 was 2.70. In 2005 it was 1.79.

Seanez has been pretty consistent when he's healthy. Of course, that seems to be a rarity with him.
