    Fine tune or splash????

Going into the winter meetings, my question is whether the Yanks are going to just fine tune around the current group or still make a splash. Trades in the winds include:
    1) Proctor and Henn to FLA for Juan Pierre. Defense says do it!
    2) Pavano to Detroit for Craig Monroe and Carlos Pena. m-m-m-m?!?!?
    3) Sign Bill Mueller (FA).....
    4) Sign Octavio Dotel to a Lieber-like deal
    5) Fill rest of BP with farm 's best prospects

Sabre's will point to Pierre's decline, but if he'd been a Yankee, it would just be a one-year glitch in a .300 hitter's career.... can Donnie instill patience to turn some quick-slap outs into BB's?

If not Pierre, do we hope for a break and get Ichiro for Pavano, or try to pry Reed loose from the Mariners?

Carl Pavano to Mariners for RHP Julio Mateo and C Rene Rivera. M's pay all of Pavanos salary, which we use to sign RHP Kevin Millwood to a three year/30 million dollar deal.

RHP Aaron Small to Phillies for Jason Michaels

For CF, wait until the non-tender deadline, see what shakes out and then make a move. If it's a trade, see if Brad Wilkerson can be had for reasonable rates. MIchaels also a possibility. Say no to Pierre.

the winter meeting is too short a period of time to make a deal. Maybe after the meeting.

Are you kidding? Most of the deals that will go down next week, probably have been discussed among the various ballclubs since the GM meetings.

how many days does the winter meeting last so my guess is 3 or 4 days is too short to finalize a deal considering that the teams will compare the offers of other team.

Absolutely no chance. Jeremy Reed is not being traded.

Sad thing about that is he was offered to the Yanks for Contraras 2 weeks before the trade dead line last year and the Yanks turned it down.

No kidding, huge mistake. Then look how Contreras helped the Sox out last year. My goodness we've made some terrible moves in the past few seasons.

I think it was a package of reed and cotts or olivo that was offered for contreras. At the end we got loaiza.

Funny. For a second, I actually thought you were insinuating Pierre was a good fielder. Because, as we all know, he's horrible.

I second that. Ichiro is going nowhere and neither is Wells and Hunter.

And ARod was going to the Sawx in January 2004. Just wait--if it can be pulled off, it will.

The issue is do the Yankees really want a prime CF that badly in 2006 when the 2007 FA class looks pretty good.

Very interesting and I don't think those statements are too off base either. We may see a Small type deal for Michaels mid season if Small continues to pitch well and Bubba is our starting CFer.

Since the trade ideas on this thread are somewhat sprialing somewhere not quite out of control, let's throw this one out (to get completely out of control)...Manny to the Yankees in a three-way. How could that be acheived?

You want spalsh, you get tsunami.

    Yikes.
How about Andy Phillips and Womack for Pujols?

Mattingly can't fix a major skill that a player never had. Pierre has no patience.

Even in a three way deal, it wouldn't work out.

    Re: Fine tune or splash????

By all accounts, Pierre is a decent to better fielder but doesn't possess a rocket arm. As for patience, he has been paid to get on base, challenge arms and pitchers by stretching a base or stealing one and has never been with a team that wanted him to be patient. Oh, the Mueller thingwas all over the radio in the Midwest and in about 7 major papers. I only listed what had been circulating this last week. Now if you want wild speculation......

Yeah, I'd love to see Jeremy Reed in pinstripes (i've wanted to acquire him for a while now) but I think we'll end up with Jason Michaels.

I'd just want a center fielder that can hit well and field well. I don't see a splash now that Cash is at the helm with Stick by his side. If teams get too greedy all you people who think you'll see a big name come through will feel dispair when you see Bubba Crosby starting in Spring Training.

I wonder what has the most chance of happening? Millwood signing 3/30 or Gillick taking Small? Perhaps it's Oriz leading the AL in steals next year.

Are you nuts? Andy Phillips is way too much to include in this deal.
