I saw the headline on ESPN article colomn that says Cameron to Padres is likely. I don't have ESPN insider however, so I could not read the article. Can anyone expand on this? Thanks.

The Mets and the Padres are on the verge of a deal that would send Mike Cameron to San Diego, a baseball official told ESPN's Buster Olney on Wednesday.
Other parts of the prospective deal are not known at this time, but the Mets are looking for middle relief help and the Padres are reportedly willing to discuss reliever Akinori Otsuka, who would be a natural fit in New York.
The Padres nearly signed Cameron as a free agent after the 2003 season and still have a need for someone to patrol center field at Petco Park
"If the Yankees get another guy [Burnett], re-sign Andy Pettitte on top of Sabathia, I'll take my chance that they might be the best team in the American League."-said one National League executive
Otsuka is the guy that the Sox tried to get from the Pads for David Wells. I wonder if this is the first chip to be acquired in a possible Manny deal...

That's what I was thinking. I can't see how they would be making that deal for any other reason.Originally Posted by Workhorse

Maybe Cameron will be then moved for Wells and replace Damon for the Sox? Who knows?

Isn't it possible that the Mets are just looking for bullpen help? Lord knows they need it.

it doesn't make sense for them to be trading cameron just for otsuka... they get easily get much more value for him.

Well there WAS that 3 way with TB that was rumored last week. So it could theoretically be a deal like:
Mets get Manny
Boston gets Otsuka and Huff
TB gets Milledge/Heilman
No idea if there's any chance for that, but there's a few different ways that the Mets could theoretically spin Otsuka around. Presuming they don't just get him to help their own bullpen. Because signing Wagner/Ryan, a secondary arm like Gordon, Looper, Eyre, or Tavarez and adding Otsuka pretty much builds a bullpen right there.

If the Padres got Cameron, would that take them out of the Giles sweepstakes?

I would think that the Sox would rather have Heilman and Milledge than Otsuka and Huff.Originally Posted by LuckyLopez
This might not have any relation to the Manny trade. Unless negotiations are pretty advanced with the Mets, I'm not sure if they would make the trade in anticipation of a trade with Boston. I think if the Mets want to sign Wagner/Ryan and trade for Delgado, they have to clear up some salary - and this trade will help them towards doing that. Plus they get relief help at the same time.

In light of Matsui's deal, the Padres are already out of the Giles sweepstakes unless he stays for way less money than he will command on the market.Originally Posted by njdhockey

Kay just mentioned the Mets traded Cameron and got Nady.
Get 27!

Yeah, maybe. I was just going off of that rumor from last week that had Boston getting Huff and Baez.Originally Posted by terminator

Bad deal for the Mets.
Just Xavier Nady?
Hmmmm, Cameron to Padres? Boy I wish he would return to the American League. But the Padres for sure could use him.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseba...orts-headlinesThe Mets have agreed to trade Mike Cameron to the Padres for outfielder/first baseman Xavier Nady, a person familiar with the situation said today, with San Diego awaiting the result of a physical to check Cameron's eyesight in the wake of his last season's damaging collision with Carlos Beltran.
The righthanded-hitting Nady, 27, batted .261 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs in 326 at-bats for the Padres in 2005.

The Mets have agreed to trade Mike Cameron to the Padres for outfielder/first baseman Xavier Nady, according to people familiar with the situation, with San Diego awaiting the result of a physical to check Cameron's eyesight in the wake of last season's horrifying collision with Carlos Beltran.
Nady, who turned 27 on Monday, batted .261 with 13 home runs in 124 games for the Padres this year, and gives the Mets the flexibiity of using him in rightfield or at first base, two areas of need at the moment. The Padres also have agreed to pay all of Cameron's $7-million salary for 2006, which is the final year of his contract. It is likely the deal will not be announced until Friday, which is the earliest the physical can be completed.

The Mets just got the shaft.

Well, Cameron's value might be at an all time low. He's coming off a less than stellar year, he's in the last year of his contract, and despite what any of the medical tests might say, the jury will still be out on how he will perform next year.Originally Posted by ryanthe13th
Plus, I believe that the main aim of the Mets might have been to dump his salary.
I don't know much about Nady - anyone have any comments about him?
Hilarious. San Diego Padres forums (signonsandiego.com) are all saying the Padres got the shaft.Originally Posted by ryanthe13th

Watch Nady hit 30HR and 100RBI in New York next year while Cameron Ks 130 times and can't reach the fences in Petco...not to mention the HUGE salary relief the Mets just got.

EDIT: Unless the Mets are still picking up alot of MC's money.

Eck. I think we could have done better than xavier nady. Cameron would have been nice for us.
Nady showed some power this year. I was thinking the Yankees could have got him because like Wilkerson he could play CF/1B if need be. Interesting deal, Nady got moved around alot on the diamond so you have to wonder how that affected his hitting. Dumb trade for the Mets though, they could have gotten alot better for Cameron.
I don't know if his numbers will be that high, but I think the Mets certainly got the better end of this deal.Originally Posted by yanksphan

i think it's a wash, to be honest. cameron will strike out a ton and his power #s will obviously go down at PETCO, but nady isn't exactly going to a hitter's friendly park in shea either and while he has shown an upside in power, i don't epxect him to make much more of an impact on that team than cameron would have.
if anything, i think the mets will swing nady for manny.
Shea is not exactly a bandbox. I don't see Xavier Nady putting up 30 homers and 100 rbi's in Shea. JMHO.
I would think the Mets could get more value for MC.
Even Nady and Otsuka would be acceptable.
I was just taking a jab at Kevin Towers & Bruce Bochy actually - but who knows what Nady can do when used properly.Originally Posted by H Reyes

So who's replacing Cameron on the Mets?
You've got nothing to believe in but believing in yourself.
I definately could see Nady being swung to Tampa in a Huff deal or to Boston in a Manny deal, or even Florida in a possible Delgado deal. He'll be a Met for a few weeks in the winter joining greats such as David Justice and Joe Randa
I don't mind this trade that much. Cameron's value did drop from Sheffield in July to Nady in November, but you really have to factor the collision into that.
Yes, San Diego will pay all the money for Cameron, so the Mets also free up a lot more money to play with which could go toward Manny or Delgado

Does Nady have any Hispanic blood in him? Because that's the only way this moron Minaya makes a deal like this. It makes no sense.
This is good for Cameron. He knew he was the better CF bewteen Beltran and him, and got the shaft by the Mets.

He should get ripped more for the horrendous Brian Lawrence for Vinny Castilla deal.Originally Posted by yanksphan

Obviously, if Larry has signed off on a deal - which noone has heard of at this stage - that changes things.

Does this have any impact on Giles staying or leaving SD?

Nady is cheap and although 27, is still 5 years younger than Cameron and entering his prime. The Padres need great defensive OFers and Cameron made it clear he wanted to leave the Mets. Nady was recently considered a very good prospect, although some of the shine is off, I think this was simply a deal of matching needs. Cameron is a good player likely to decline offensively going forward.Originally Posted by Dooley Womack
