The pellets struck and injured his right leg severely enough that on the following day, doctors determined the leg could not be saved, so unfortunately they were forced to amputate.
Stratton made his pitching debut in late 1934 with the White Sox and became a regular starter in 1937 winning a team-high 15 games in an all-star year that saw him with a 2.40 ERA - second best in the American League. He also led his team with 15 wins in 1938. For five seasons total he had a lifetime winning record of 36-23.
Stratton attempted a comeback in 1946 and pitched in the minors. While pitching there he suffered through tough times because batters would bunt very often which were tough for him to reach. Eventually Stratton saw success at the Class-C level of play while with team "Sherman" in the East Texas League... winning 18 games. That's as far as he made it back -- and it was remarkable!

"The Big Apple has no joy left. I could name 3 reasons for it. Eighteen years total and fifteen of those because of me ... I continued it before the multitude and because so, there is no joy left on Broadway."
So ... in New York, all was sad because the Yankees had lost the World Series. After taking the first two World Series games played at Yankee Stadium against the Dodgers in 1981, the Yankees were unable to win another game in the Series that year. The pitcher that I'm looking for had the miss-fortune of taking the loss in every game he appeared during the Series ... three of the four lost games ... with the third loss being in the final game of the 81' Series at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees had last won the World Series in 1977 and 78' ... but with George Frazier losing those three games he pitched for the Yankees in the 1981 Series, a Championship drought would then continue on until 1996. Eighteen years would become the new longest stretch ever for the Yankees without a World Championship added to their baseball dynasty Yankee name, ever since the acquisition of Babe Ruth.

The two numbers I wore that ended up being retired by the Yankees were the numbers 3 and 7. I'm Cliff Mapes.

I pitched eleven seasons in the Majors and won one World Championship with an American League team in my career. I won twenty games one season during which I had four shut-outs.
During almost three full seasons I was a Yankee. I won thirty-nine games for the Yanks, but only four of those wins were at Yankee Stadium.

First off, as a starting pitcher I went face to face up against future HOF pitcher Walter Johnson three times in my career, winning twice, losing once, with a shutout in one of my wins. I had an ERA of 2.35 in my pitching career that spanned 14 seasons -- finishing with Boston in the National League.
Pitching isn't the real story here though ... because I could really manage a bat. I had a three-year stretch that was unbelievable during my career. I batted .400 on the nose in that three-year time span, while belting 222 extra-base hits. I also stole 128 bases. Lastly, I had the terrible misfortune of striking out 60 times during those three seasons!![]()

I never played at short and never caught or pitched ... but I did play at every other position and I did about everything there is to do in baseball over the years. You could say I was rather aggressive in anything I took on and did in baseball ... and gave it my all on every play, no matter the game be played.
I won three rings in World Series play and was a part of one very impressive sweep in one. My favorite team took it all again the season after I was gone, in a surprising sweep that beat the odds ... I can tell you that for sure. Only wish I'd still been a part of the action when it happened that last time for that team.
Sixty-seven is an important number that I'll love forever ... along with eighty-five and fifty-seven. All are numbers I'd play on Lotto if the numbers went that high ... because they all have significance to me.

Who am I? #59
I'm a pitcher that has pitched in both leagues. I've pitched when Ron Guidry and Don Mattingly were teammates. Graig Nettles was a teammate of mine. I've pitched a time when the Red Sox hit 3 home runs off me in a start. I also had 3 home runs hit off me by the Yankees in a start. No big deal I guess, because one team or another has hit 3 off me 11 times in my career. That's not counting when 4 were hit in a game off me twice!![]()
I have lost 8 straight starts before. Two of the eight losses came against the Yankees and the Red Sox. Mike Stanley hit a grand slam in one of those games. At the end of that losing streak my lifetime pitching record was 42* wins and 45* losses. My ERA was over 4.00. I was wild, walking 456* batters in 714.1* innings. I was only fifty-six days shy of being twenty-nine years old. Looked like I was gonna be just another one of those journeymen pitchers in baseball, with a career heading south.![]()
Things changed though. HOF numbers without any doubt in my career were ahead. Some doubters now though ... today about me.![]()
Who am I?
Oh. I've won 11 times against the Yankees while losing 8 times in total - in my career.
*I'm sorry. I'm surprised we got the correct answer to this Who am I? !!! My early numbers were off some for the early career ... fifty-six days shy of being twenty-nine years old numbers ... I'd given.(Not 49 wins - but 42; Not 58 loses - but 45; Not 552 walks - but 456; Not 875.1 innings - but 714.1) ALL THAT WRONG ... and 26xwc comes through again! The current Yankee pitcher, that is down right now - but not quite out yet ... the 42-year old Randy Johnson. He is the answer to (Who am I? #59). Randy will be turning 43 this coming September 10th, when the Yankees are in Baltimore taking on the Orioles in the third game of a four game series.
Johnson's career, up to the end of his eight-game, career-high, consecutive loss streak, stood at 42 wins and 45 losses. (.483) To that point, Randy was walking batters at a rate of 5.75 per nine innings. He had also struck-out 681 batters in his 714.1 innings pitched, which comes out to 8.58 per nine innings.
Things did change. Things that will put Randy Johnson in the Hall of Fame for sure, six-years after his retirement from baseball - on the first ballot.
Johnson's career turned sharply then. He has been astounding since. Up to this date, Johnson has added 227 wins while losing only 95 more games. His winning percentage for this changed Randy Johnson has been .705 since. (.658 career)
Looking at that .705 winning percentage since July of 1992 ... let's compare with the all-time career leader in winning percentage, Spud Chandler at .717 for his career - all eleven seasons with the New York Yankees. During that 11-season stretch, Chandler's Yankee teams won 6 World Championships, 7 American League Championships total. Three seasons were during the war years of 1943-45, where the Yankees still took a World Championship ... but also included one fourth place finish.
The 15-season .705 winning percentage stretch by Johnson since 1992 has included some pretty bad Seattle Mariner and Arizona Diamondbacks teams. Seattle at 64-98 and 49-63 in two of the seasons. Arizona, with one season at 51-111, (.315) in 2004 ... when Johnson went 16-14, (.533 - including pitching a perfect game) Without Johnson, the Diamondbacks were 35-97! (.265!)
Randy Johnson's walk ratio, in this 15-season period, has been 2.8 per nine innings ... falling from 5.75.His strike-out ratio has been 11.46 per nine innings ... up from 8.58.
![]()
Overall, Randy Johnson has 269 wins to date since 1988 ... leaving him just 31 wins short of the magic 300 ... which I think he hopes to accomplish with the Yankees.
Will it happen?

Another "Who am I?" please, Dave?
Nevermind, let me take number 60, please, Dave.
Who am I?
From my sixteen years of play, I have lost two of the three world series I have been in, yet, I don't have a ring to show for it. When I pitched the Yankees in the world series, back when my career was young, I had struck out thrice, and I hadn't assisted our team with my play either, despite I faced some of the greatest players in baseball... I should of won atleast one. Three years later, I had gone 2-0 in world series play, my team would not support me. I was, in fact, the only player on my team to record any victory in that world series. It didn't seem fair.
I'd been on fire in my career. Two years after I had began my career, I was contending for the MVP award. Three times had I won twenty plus games. First and last aside, I had never had a losing season. Which always left me kicking myself, wondering why I hadn't ever been even suggested to join the naturals...
Who am I?
I got one dollar that says you won't discover the answer by the end of May, Dave.![]()
