The only statistical regret I had about my 18-year Yankee career was what came in the end... when my lifetime average fell below .300. Man... that would of been awfully nice to have kept. I'm a switch-hitting infielder that started on four World Series Champion teams in a fourteen year stretch. I was very well known for my range at the position I played, and hold a fielding record that still stands. With a bat I wasn't shabby either. I had 437 more extra base hits then I had strikeouts. In fact, in my long career, I only struck-out over 20 times twice in a season! I also showed some major power in my all-star appearances while playing in the National League.

Monty Stratton.

Excellent memory of a valiant try from a previous AL All-Star in 37'... for the Who am I? #25.

November 27.1938, Big League pitcher Monty Stratton of the Chicago White Sox was hunting rabbits on his mother's farm when he slipped and fell while trying to walk down a hill to a creek, accidentally discharging his shotgun. The pellets struck and injured his right leg severely enough that on the following day, doctors determined the leg could not be saved, so unfortunately they were forced to amputate.

Stratton made his pitching debut in late 1934 with the White Sox and became a regular starter in 1937 winning a team-high 15 games in an all-star year that saw him with a 2.40 ERA - second best in the American League. He also led his team with 15 wins in 1938. For five seasons total he had a lifetime winning record of 36-23.

Stratton attempted a comeback in 1946 and pitched in the minors. While pitching there he suffered through tough times because batters would bunt very often which were tough for him to reach. Eventually Stratton saw success at the Class-C level of play while with team "Sherman" in the East Texas League... winning 18 games. That's as far as he made it back -- and it was remarkable!

A good guess but no. Maglie only pitched as many as 47 games in a season only one time ... because in his career he mostly appeared as a starting pitcher.

Take a look at what I had said about the pitcher I was looking for:

"The Big Apple has no joy left. I could name 3 reasons for it. Eighteen years total and fifteen of those because of me ... I continued it before the multitude and because so, there is no joy left on Broadway."

So ... in New York, all was sad because the Yankees had lost the World Series. After taking the first two World Series games played at Yankee Stadium against the Dodgers in 1981, the Yankees were unable to win another game in the Series that year. The pitcher that I'm looking for had the miss-fortune of taking the loss in every game he appeared during the Series ... three of the four lost games ... with the third loss being in the final game of the 81' Series at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees had last won the World Series in 1977 and 78' ... but with George Frazier losing those three games he pitched for the Yankees in the 1981 Series, a Championship drought would then continue on until 1996. Eighteen years would become the new longest stretch ever for the Yankees without a World Championship added to their baseball dynasty Yankee name, ever since the acquisition of Babe Ruth.

You could say I was rather aggressive in anything I took on and did in baseball ... and gave it my all on every play, no matter the game be played.

I won three rings in World Series play and was a part of one very impressive sweep in one. My favorite team took it all again the season after I was gone, in a surprising sweep that beat the odds ... I can tell you that for sure. Only wish I'd still been a part of the action when it happened that last time for that team.

The pitcher formerly known as Randy Johnson?

Yes ... as I had already said up above in the previous post.

The current Yankee pitcher, that is down right now - but not quite out yet ... the 42-year old Randy Johnson. He is the answer to (Who am I? #59). Randy will be turning 43 this coming September 10th, when the Yankees are in Baltimore taking on the Orioles in the third game of a four game series.

Johnson's career, up to the end of his eight-game, career-high, consecutive loss streak, stood at 42 wins and 45 losses. (.483) To that point, Randy was walking batters at a rate of 5.75 per nine innings. He had also struck-out 681 batters in his 714.1 innings pitched, which comes out to 8.58 per nine innings.

Things did change. Things that will put Randy Johnson in the Hall of Fame for sure, six-years after his retirement from baseball - on the first ballot.

From my sixteen years of play, I have lost two of the three world series I have been in, yet, I don't have a ring to show for it. When I pitched the Yankees in the world series, back when my career was young, I had struck out thrice, and I hadn't assisted our team with my play either, despite I faced some of the greatest players in baseball... I should of won atleast one. Three years later, I had gone 2-0 in world series play, my team would not support me. I was, in fact, the only player on my team to record any victory in that world series. It didn't seem fair.

I'd been on fire in my career. Two years after I had began my career, I was contending for the MVP award. Three times had I won twenty plus games. First and last aside, I had never had a losing season. Which always left me kicking myself, wondering why I hadn't ever been even suggested to join the naturals...
