    The 2006 MLB Draft

Yeah, June is 8 months away, but it's never too early to talk about the draft. The Yankees, at the moment, hold the 28th pick in the draft. Who should they pick? What direction should they go? Post your opinions here.

Hopefully the best player a team ranked 16-20 signs is Gordon so we can get their 1st round pick and a supplementary pick.

I am interested to see what picks we end up with after all the player movement coming this offseason. Then I can start worrying about who to draft.

We don't even know if we will have a 1st rd draft pick yet, too early for all this......

Well, actually we did. We tied with Boston and Anaheim. And because they had worse records last year they get the higher picks.

Great. Now it's time to convince the Royals to sign Tom Gordon after he rejects arbitration from us.

The first 15 picks are protected. Any team in the first 15 cannot lose its 1st round draft pick. So, we'd pick up their 2nd round pick.

I don't think Brewers, Padres, Marlins, Twins want Gordon. So all we need to do is to convince the Met or Phillies to sign Tom Gordon after he rejects arbitration from us.

Actually, I think that its a good possibility that he could wind up on the Mets.

With the World Series over, the Mets began contacting the representatives for free agents, including San Diego's Trevor Hoffman and the Yankees' Tom Gordon.

Bomer had serious rotator cuff problems and was released, while King had tommy john prior to being drafted (IIRC) and was drafted in the hope they got a steal. I dont think he logged any innings with us unfortunately.

    Clark just did nothing

Gordon may go to San Diego if Hoffman can't be re-signed.

It also depends on what's coming out of the DSL. Geraldo Rodriguez and Reynaldo Rodriguez look good enough to be in the states next year. If for some reason when spring rolls around they're not progressing as expected, the Yanks may consider a catcher through the draft. I like Hank Conger better than Max Sapp.

Big time power. May need to change positions in the future though.

    Re: The 2006 MLB Draft

Dellin Betances also looks like he could be a good one too, 6'9 RHP. Favorite team is the Yankees too .

    Dellin Betances:
    http://usabaseball.com/sports/m-jr-b..._dellin00.html

    Max Sapp:
    http://usabaseball.com/sports/m-jr-b...app_max00.html

Info on a bunch of kids from the Team USA Junior team:

    http://www.perfectgame.org/2005/stor...ac_classic.cfm

Sapp is an outstanding defensive catcher with a strong arm. His best tool is his bat which is one of the most powerful in the country.
6-9 RHP Dellin Betances could be the best of all by next year's draft. We have seen him as high as 94 mph and he will throw better yet.

What can you tell me about Geraldo and Reynaldo Rodriguez as far as abilities, switch hitter, and other talents?

I really, really like Betances. This is why I hope we get a compensation for Gordon in the 16-20 range in the 1st round, to have a shot at Betances. But if he continues to improve, Betances could go in the Top 10 next year.

You can't go wrong w/ Sapp or Conger. But I just started liking Conger better when I read he has championship make-up. Can't recall where I read it though. Sapp is much better defensively than I thought. Conger is almost as good w/ the wood and behind the plate, and bats switch.

Great link for a lot of the the 2006 draft prospects:http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/3880120

It is very hard to know much about any DSL prospect before they come to the States. IIRC, Reynaldo batted for a higher average but didn't show a lot of power and is about 19-20 yrs. old. Geraldo batted for less avg. but showed much more power and is younger (around 18). I think Geraldo has more potential but it's hard to know anything at this point b/c DSL stats should be taken w/ a grain of salt.

They say Betances' MLB comparison is Daniel Cabrera. That's what I was thinking when I read about him.

After reading about Sapp, I like him a lot. But if it's between Betances and Sapp, I'd go with Betances.

    Re: The 2006 MLB Draft

Some guys I'd like to see us look at it the high rounds

    Dellin Betances
    Jeremy Jeffress
    Cedric Hunter
    Brent Brewer
    Torre Langley

I absolutely don't want us to go need (C) in the first round, that ends badly most of the time. However I think Torre Langley would be a good looking pick after that.
    What goes here?

    Re: The 2006 MLB Draft

Why doesn't the MLB realize the pros of being able to trade picks. You can do it in football, basketball and hockey. This would be good for the small market teams, instead of having to pay your first round pick 4 million, you can trade it for two picks later in the draft that cost you two million combined. Bud Selig needs to get his head out of his butt and start being smart

Last time we drafted a Catcher in the first round he turned out to be a bust. I think you can still get a decent catcher in the later rounds. I would rather go after pitchers or outfielders.

BZZT. The Orioles drafted a catcher in the first round last year and he looks like a stud so far. The Braves have drafted two great catchers two years in a row in the first round.

The difference is making a stupid pick or a good pick.

I don't think either of those teams went into the draft thinking they HAD to have a catcher in the first round though.

The Orioles and Braves were both in the same situation as us during those draft years. I'm not advocating that we should draft a 3rd round talent catcher in the first round just because we need a catcher, but it is a position that we should focus on in the first round. Mainly because the talent of players in the first 2-3 rounds are usually superior to the rest.

I agree. While looking out for a great catcher in the first round is one thing, not drafting the best player available in the first round ends up being a mistake more often than not, as great talent can be traded for what is needed later on. Catcher may be a slight exception to this rule because it so specialized and thus possibly harder to trade for, but I would still rather we draft primarily on talent rather than need in the first round.

I would like the Yankees to think about making more guys in the organization into catchers. That is what Posada did. Our infield is set for the near future with Cano, Duncan, Jeter and Arod. Our outfield is loaded with prospects, and Henry will join them soon. If there are any infielders out there that show hitting potential, why not give it a try? We could get lucky again, who knows.

Well, the Yankees are moving 3B prospect Kyle Anson to catcher, or at least they're going to try to.

Catcher isn't like left field or even 1b, unfortunately. Not everybody can make the transition.

That's correct. So we move up to 21 from 28. That should land us a decent prospect.
